Skin care is very important and this is especially so for acne sufferers. Practising good acne skin care will pave the way to an enhanced healing of the skin. Your skin will look and feel better; it will become more even toned and vibrant.

On the other hand, if you are doing the following things, you will weaken the natural protecting capabilities of your skin. This will slow down the healing process of your skin, thus making your skin look bad and making your acne worse:

1. Smoking

Besides causing lung cancer and heart disease, smoking is never good for your skin. Not only it can cause early aging of your skin (e.g. wrinkles), smoking also causes the contraction of the small capillaries and blood vessels of the skin.

 

This will deprive your skin of oxygen which is essential for the creation and maintenance of healthy cells. The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology has performed studies that show a correlation between smoking and post-adolescent acne.

2. Using Topical Steroids

Over the counter or prescription cortisone based creams, especially the potent types, can eventually thin your skin and worsen your acne condition. In the long run besides giving you skin irritation; those steroid creams can also cause skin redness and other side effects.

 

Moreover, such products only address the symptoms of acne (inflammation, itching, and puss); they do not treat its root cause. Nevertheless, taking care of your skin externally is highly recommended but should be performed gently using pure natural ingredients such as diluted tea tree oil.

3. Taking Antibiotics

Antibiotic treatments like tetracycline can aggravate your acne in the long run and do severe damage to your internal system, by indiscriminately destroy all the bacteria in your system including the good and probiotic bacteria.

You should never use those four-in-one razor blades when shaving especially if you have large bumps and painful cysts. This is because reason these blades can increase the likelihood of severe irritation and skin damage. Instead, use a single blade when having “live” acne.

During shaving, you shave downward, in the direction of growth of the hair follicles, to prevent irritation. After shaving, skip the splash of cologne or alcohol-based aftershave, which can irritate your skin — not to mention leave you in agony if you have any open cuts or recently popped pimples.

 
5. Picking, popping and squeezing your skin

You should never ever touch, pick or squeeze your blemishes. By doing so, you can only make your acne get worse by aggravating your existing inflammation and pushing the puss deeper and wider into the skin. Moreover, the germs on your fingers and nails can cause infections, making acne symptoms like cysts larger in size and therefore giving you more risk of developing larger scars.

 

There are in fact some very effective and safe ways of dealing with small whiteheads or blackheads but it will be much better to leave this task to the professionals if you care for your skin and wish to prevent further scarring.

6. Taking excessive amounts of Vitamin A

Taking Vitamin A from natural sources (green leafy vegetables and beta carotene fruit and veggies) in moderate amount can significantly enhance the healing process of your skin. But when taken excessively it can seriously damage your liver and cause severe health problems and side effects.

7. Use over the counters for your Rosacea

Taking over the counter products can make your skin red and irritating is definitely not something you want to do when you are suffering from rosacea. If you suffer from rosacea, always consult your dermatologist prior to applying over the counters on your already inflamed and highly sensitive skin.

 

8. Over-wash your face

 

It is indeed true that one of the causes of acne is clogged pores. But scrubbing your skin with a harsh cleanser several times a day isn’t the best skincare, and it could make your problem worse.

 

Washing frequently or with harsh chemicals damages your delicate skin cells and dries out your skin. This reduces your skin’s ability to fight infections. Plus, it just won’t look as healthy. Dermatologists recommend washing no more than twice a day with warm water and a mild soap made just for people with acne.

 

9. Wearing heavy make-up

 

Avoid heavy makeup as it clogs your pores and adds to acne problem. If you want to apply make-up, you should only use those that are should be non-greasy, non-comedogenic (or non-acnegenic), hypoallergenic, non-irritating, and oil-free. These types of products won’t clog your pores and they’re better for acne-affected skin.

Look for those mineral-based cosmetics contain added ingredients like silica, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide, which both absorb oil and hide redness without irritating skin and causing pimples.

 

Another ingredient to look for is dimethicone, which also conceals redness while smoothing out uneven skin. Before going to bed, make sure you wash away those make-up to allow your skin to ‘breathe’, which help in the healing process.

 

10. Getting under the sun

 

When you are undergoing acne treatment, your skin will be highly sensitive. Sunlight dries out the skin, extracting the moisture from the skin pores, causing irritation on the affected area. Moreover, if you get burned too long by the sun, you can get premature lines and wrinkles and increase your risk of skin cancer.

 

Use a sun block, if you cannot avoid exposure to sun. Get a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that protects against both UVA and UVB light. A water-based or light liquid-based gel or spray-on sunscreen is best for people who tend to get breakouts.

 

You can also look for light lotions and powder sunscreens. Look for “noncomedogenic” on the label, which means it should not clog your skin’s pores. Watch out for chemicals such as PABA and benzophenone, which can irritate sensitive skin. Look for physical sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
