Hydrochlorothiazide is an extremely common blood pressure treatment, either as a separate drug, or combined with others into a single pill.

This blood pressure medication is also sometimes prescribed for people who suffer from swelling due to fluid build-up, liver disease, kidney disease, heart failure, diabetes insipidus, and high calcium levels to prevent kidney stones.

This blood pressure medication is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines and is even available in generic form.

The researchers consulted the Danish Cancer Registry and identified 80,000 cases of skin cancer between 2004 and 2012. They randomly picked another 80,000 people without skin cancer with whom to compare them.

They then used the Danish Prescription Registry to estimate the number of people who were taking hydrochlorothiazide.

Shockingly, those taking hydrochlorothiazide were seven times more likely than those not on the drug to develop a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma.

They were also more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma, but the relationship with this type was weaker.

This Blood Pressure Medication Increases Your Skin Sensitivity to Ultraviolet Rays

The problem with Hydrochlorothiazide is its photosensitizing effect. It makes your skin even more sensitive to ultraviolet rays than it usually is, and thereby enhances the sun’s potentially harmful effects.

This is just one of many studies connecting various types of blood pressure medications with different types of cancer.

It’s therefore advice that you try all natural options before defaulting on prescription medications.
