Green tea is consumed mostly in Asia countries, including India, Japan, Korea and China and its health benefits are widely known in these places. The health benefits of green tea are gaining greater recognition in the US because of studies that indicate that green tea can fight cancer.

The medicinal properties of green tea come from the huge amount of polyphenols it contains. Polyphenols which act as antioxidants help block the development of skin-cancer cells.

A study done by the dermatology department at the University Hospital Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio found that green tea does offer protection from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultra violet rays on the skin.

As we age, our immune response in our skin lessens which is believed to be a main reason that many people succumb to skin cancer and other skin maladies as they age.  UV radiation further damages the skin’s immune response.

Topical application of green and white tea, according to this study, inhibits the damaging effects of UV radiation to our skin’s immune response system making it an excellent addition to any skin care routine. Further studies have supported these findings and found even further benefits.

Besides drinking lots of green tea, another great way to harness the benefits of green tea is to learn how to make your own facial mask using green tea as one of the main ingredients, which is an effective way to condition, clean or treat the skin.
