Homemade organic body scrubs are just one of the many ways you can treat yourself to excellent skin care without spa prices. With these scrubs, not only will your skin be cleansed and exfoliated, but regular use improves circulation and pulls toxins from the skin.

 

By using organic ingredients to make your own body scrub, you can protect yourself against absorbing other toxins through the skin. Most ingredients for creating your homemade organic body scrub can be found in health food stores and are readily available online.

 

ALL of these scrubs should be used in the bath or shower and should be followed by patting your skin dry and applying an organic moisturizer for overall skin care.

 

One word of caution-before using any type of scrub all over the body, tests the scrub on a small patch of skin first. People with sensitive skin especially need to do this.

 

A person with very fair skin might not be able to tolerate the abrasive properties of coffee directly on the skin. This applies for a lot of the salt scrubs that are available too. Usually in these cases a sugar scrub is best.

 

No matter which body scrub you use, always, remember not to exfoliate skin soon after tanning, if you are sunburned, if you have small wounds or irritated zones on the skin surface or if you are allergic to some of the ingredients that the peeling contains. To achieve best results, body scrub should be applied on moist skin – the best time is after you took a shower.

 

When making body scrubs at home, it is best to only include enough ingredients for a one-time use. There is no advantage to having a body scrub surplus because only fresh ingredients can have a positive impact on your skin.

 

Trying to store the body scrub that you make at home will just lead to waste and ineffective exfoliation the next time you try to use it. Besides, combining the ingredients is so easy that making a fresh batch every time should not be a problem.

 

It is also important to remember that more than two tablespoons of an oil substance will create a slick area on the shower floor when the scrubbing is done. This can lead to dangerous slips and serious injuries, so it is imperative that no extra oil is left in the tub.

 

There are many ways to make your own body scrub at home. The most basic way to make your own body scrub is simply to mix a wet ingredient with a dry, exfoliating ingredient. Common wet ingredients that are found around the house are liquid soap, vegetable butter, and various types of oil.

 

Examples of easy to find exfoliating ingredients are sugar, oatmeal, salt, ground coffee, cornmeal, or anything that will provide your own signature body scrub with the right texture to allow it to get to work on removing those dead skin cells.

 

One of my favourite exfoliating agents for making a body scrub at home is the Dead Sea salt. Dead Sea salt has many benefits for the body, including exfoliating, moisturizing, revitalizing and cleansing. Salt gathered from the Dead Sea makes an excellent body scrub because of its high mineral content, which is much higher than normal sea salt.

 

In fact, Dead Sea salt contains magnesium, potassium and calcium, all of which work to repair, heal and hydrate the skin. Using this salt in a body scrub will yield almost miraculous results on sufferers of dry skin, psoriasis, acne, wrinkles and aging skin.

 

When you make your own body scrub, one to two tablespoons each from both the “dry” ingredient and the “wet” ingredient is perfect for creating a single-use portion. And if you’re feeling adventuresome, why not try adding seaweed, herbs, aloe, or even clay to make your own body scrub for a luxurious feel and an exotic twist.

 

When an oil is your “wet” ingredient, it’s always best to be careful not to use too much of it for a variety of reasons. The combination should be 1 tablespoon of oil to 2 tablespoons of the exfoliating ingredient. When you are through applying the body scrub, use a sponge to get rid of all the extra oil and other substances that might have been left behind.

 

To add a pleasing scent when you make your own body scrub, add aromatherapy oils (or essential oils) that are infused with perfume, which is the last stage to making your own body scrub. Add the oil to the dry grainy subsistence you are using, and you’ll not only be exfoliating but relaxing and letting go of your stress at the same time.

 

Just be careful not to add too much of the aromatherapy oil. Dilute this with carrier oil. For example, 5-6 drops of the aromatherapy oil to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil, which can be olive oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil and almond oil.

 

As for essential oil, I will prefer lavender oil because it is very gentle and good for all skin types, including very sensitive skin. It is perfect for mature skin, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It is also effective in soothing itchy skin.

 

For an all-natural scent, don’t be afraid to get creative with your favorite varieties of flowers and herbs. Besides these, you can either use fruits or vegetables. Many fruits can be ground, pulverized and reduced to pulp in an electric blender providing a wide variety of natural cleansing and moisturizing body scrubs.

 

Papaya, pineapple, peach, avocado, apples, strawberries, grapes with seeds, bananas and tomatoes, which are fruits, can be mashed and combined with natural oils including olive, sunflower, nut and soybean oil with or without a scrubbing ingredient to produce soothing, fresh body scrubs. When using fruits, vegetables or dairy products as body scrubs it is best to make them up fresh as these types of ingredients spoil quickly.

 

Among the choices for vegetables use to make your own body scrub, cucumber is the popular choice. Cucumbers have been used for centuries to help reduce swelling and puffiness especially near the eyes and eyelids. Grinding up fresh cucumber and combining them with salt, sugar or cornmeal produces a skin softening body scrub that can be scented if desired.

 

Another alternative is to use cooked carrots. Cooked carrots to be mashed and combined with olive oil and one of the scrubbing (exfoliating) ingredients produces a nourishing scrub that will help repair damaged skin tissues from exposure, rash or illness. Beta-carotene and Vitamin C (which can be found in carrots) are common ingredients used in commercial skincare products but making your own will save you money.
