Freckles, also known as brown spots may be seen as dark colored spots on the skin. They are caused by uneven distribution of melanin in the skin. Freckles can appear anywhere on the body but they may be more apparent on the facial skin, especially on or around the nose.
Generally, light or fair skinned people are more prone to freckled skin. Freckles are sensitive to the ultra violet rays of sunlight and hence get darker on exposure to sunlight.
Freckles can be due to hereditary factor, prolonged exposure to sunlight, hormonal imbalance and some rare disorders such as Xreoderma Pigmentosum which makes the skin highly sensitive to sunlight.
Following are some natural home remedies for freckles to help you improve your complexion
One of the most popular natural home remedies for freckles is to use lemon juice. Though you may not find this very appealing to wash your face using lemon juice, but it has been proven to have this ability to lighten freckles. In fact, your freckles may even disappear after regular washing of your face with lemon juice. However this is better done in the evening, because lemon juice can make your skin very sensitive to the sun.
You can also create a paste by mixing 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice with about one quarter cup of plain yogurt (preferably Greek yogurt) and apply this to your skin for 15 minutes to lighten freckles.
Besides using lemon juice, you can use cucumber juice to wash your face for 3 times a day. You can use thin slices of cucumber or grated cucumber and apply it on your brown spots. This natural facial mask can help to reduce the intensity of freckles.
Sour cream has a similar effect on freckles as lemon juice. You can apply sour cream on your face and leave it there for at least 15 minutes. Do not rinse it off completely; gently wipe it off with a soft tissue and apply some moisturizer. Buttermilk is also beneficial in treating freckles.
For a change to make life more interesting, you also can use strawberries to lighten freckles. Strawberry is very rich in skin-friendly nutrients such as manganese, iodine, potassium, folic acid, Vitamin B5, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, riboflavin, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and copper. Eggplant also known as brinjal is rich in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients which are good for the skin. To lighten freckles, you can mash one quarter cup of unripe currants and mix them with 1 tablespoon of raw organic honey (preferably manuka honey) and apply this mixture on the freckled areas and leave on for half an hour before rinsing off. If you can’t get currants, you can substitute them with one tablespoon of lemon juice.
