Oil Cleansing Method has gained wide popularity as a way to get flawless and glowing skin. This may not sound logical to you, but cleaning your face with oil can combat naturally oily skin.

The skin care industry has always advised people with oily skin to go for oil free products. However, the fact is, the right type of oil can do wonders for your skin, irrespectively of whether it is dry skin, aging skin or oily or acne prone skin.

Oil cleansing method works on the basis that oil can dissolve oil. The basic idea behind oil cleansing method is to use specific combination of natural oils to dissolve excess oils and draw toxins and impurities from within the skin. Unlike the traditional facial and soap cleansers, this method keeps the skin much more moisturized and nourished.

Some people have this misunderstanding that oil causes acne. The fact is, acne is caused by hormonal imbalances, improper cleaning, dirt, dust and bacteria.

The truth is, using oil cleansing method to clear acne or treat oily or acne prone skin can help you to get flawless and glowing skin. But you have to be very careful in choosing the oils that suit your skin type.

This may take a bit of your time to get used to oil cleansing method because finding the right oil and the right combination needs a bit of a trial and error but it definitely works.

How to do oil cleansing for face?

The basic requirements for oil cleansing method are one clean wash cloth, steamy water and the oil blend according to your skin type.

Wash your face thoroughly to remove dirt and makeup. Follow with a warm rinse to open the pores on your skin. Take some oil (according to your skin type) on your palm and rub your hands so that the oil warms up a bit and apply it to the skin on your face and neck using a massaging motion.

Do not scrub your skin just gently massaging the oils into your skin for about 5 minutes so that it dissolves blackheads and other impurities. Dip a washcloth into steamy water because warm water opens up pores and let the impurities and toxins come out.

You will place this cloth on your face, but do make sure it is not hot enough to burn your delicate skin. This is especially so if you have sensitive skin. Drape the very warm washcloth over your face like a tent and leave it there until it cools so that excess oils can be drawn out from the skin.

When the washcloth has cooled, gently wipe your face with this cloth, remove it from your face and repeat the procedure two or three more times, starting with the application of the oil mixture.

Complete the treatment by splashing cool water on your skin to close your pores. Finish by applying just a bit of oil (jojoba oil or extra virgin olive oil if you have dry skin) to your fingertips and rubbing it into your skin.
Which Type of Oil You Should Use?

It is better to test new oils on a patch of skin before applying them to your entire face. Your skin might be sensitive to olive oil or any other oil. Do not use oil if you have a known allergy to it.

A simple guideline will be to use extra virgin olive oil and jojoba oil if your skin is normal. If you have dry skin, you should use extra virgin coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil or castor oil. For oil and acne prone skin, you should use jojoba oil and grapeseed oil or watermelon seed oil. If you have sensitive skin, you should use apricot kernel oil and jojoba oil.
As to the proportion in the oil mixture, it really depends on your choice; you can start with 50/50 to see if this works and later on you may want to switch to 75/25 or 60/40, depending on your skin condition. If you are using castor oil, and if you have dry skin, the proportion of castor oil should be below 50, because castor oil can be quite drying.
