It’s estimated that 5 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from fibromyalgia. Most are not diagnosed until middle age, although symptoms often begin earlier, and many are not correctly diagnosed at all.

Often considered an arthritis-related condition, fibromyalgia is not actually a form of arthritis. However, it is considered a rheumatic condition that causes impairment to your joints and soft tissues, along with chronic pain and fatigue.

Part of what makes fibromyalgia so challenging to diagnosis is that its main symptoms – pain and fatigue – resemble those caused by many other conditions. It’s not unusual for sufferers to visit multiple doctors multiple times before fibromyalgia is mentioned.

Further, there are no diagnostic tests for this condition, and many physicians write it off as “all in your head.” If you’ve struggled with fibromyalgia, however, you know the pain is all too real and can be quite debilitating.

If you’re not sure whether your pain is fibromyalgia-related, consider whether you experience any of these top 9 symptoms of fibromyalgia.

The Top 9 Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

  1. Muscle Aches:You may feel a deep aching or burning sensation, or experience the feeling of a pulled muscle that don’t go away.

  1. Headaches:Chronic headaches or migraines occur in about half of fibromyalgia sufferers, possibly due to a chemical imbalance in your brain.

  1. Tender Points:Pain tends to occur in 18 specific “tender points” in people with fibromyalgia. This includes the back of your head, between your shoulders, front of your neck, top of your chest, elbows, tops of your hips and inside of your knees.

You may have pain in a few or many of these spots (most fibro sufferers have multiple tender points that can be identified by applying pressure to the area).

  1. Symmetrical Pain:The pain of fibromyalgia occurs in different areas of the body, on both sides and in the upper and lower areas (although this symmetrical pain won’t necessarily occur at the same time or constantly).

  1. Fatigue:Chronic daily fatigue is common and debilitating in those with fibromyalgia. This is partly due to difficulty sleeping, which may be caused by restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea, which often occur along with fibromyalgia.

  1. Sleep Disturbances:Insomniadifficulty falling asleep, and frequent night time waking are common symptoms of fibromyalgia.

  1. Brain Fog:“Fibro fog” may make it difficult for fibromyalgia patients to think clearly. The brain fog may be worsened by lack of sleep and physical pain.

  1. Lasting Pain:The pain of fibromyalgia tends to be chronic, lasting for three months or more, and is not able to be explained by another illness or injury.

  1. Other Chronic Disease (Especially Rheumatic or Pain Conditions):Fibromyalgia is more likely to occur if you have another rheumatic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, and it may also occur alongside other pain conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, inflammatory bowel disease, interstitial cystitis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and vulvodynia.

How is Fibromyalgia Diagnosed and Treated?

Not all physicians will recognize the symptoms of fibromyalgia. However, if yours is familiar with it he or she should be able to make an accurate diagnosis. This is done based on criteria established by the American College of Rheumatology and includes:

“ … a history of widespread pain lasting more than 3 months, and other general physical symptoms including fatigue, waking unrefreshed, and cognitive (memory or thought) problems. In making the diagnosis, doctors consider the number of areas throughout the body in which the patient has had pain in the past week.”

Unfortunately, the first-line treatment for fibromyalgia is often pain relievers and/or anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are intended not as a cure but as a form of symptom relief. Antidepressants and anti-seizure medications, for pain relief, may also be recommended, although the benefits of such treatments are questionable.

In one analysis of 10 high-quality studies comprising more than 6,000 adults who received either duloxetine (Cymbalta, an antidepressant), milnacipran (Savella, for fibromyalgia pain), or a placebo to treat fibromyalgia for up to six months, the majority of those taking medications did not experience substantial improvement.

Only 22 percent of those on the drug regiment improved significantly while 21 percent quit taking the medications because the side effects were too severe.

The most common medication side effects that lead patients to stop taking the drugs were nausea, dry mouth, constipation, headache, somnolence/dizziness and insomnia, and, rarely, both drugs were associated with suicidality, liver damage, abnormal bleeding, elevated blood pressure and urinary hesitation.

The researchers concluded that drug treatment alone for fibromyalgia “should be discouraged,” and instead suggested a more holistic approach that included exercise to improve mobility and psychological counseling to improve coping skills. Study co-author Brian Walitt, M.D., M.P.H. added:

“The medical field does poorly with the treatment of fibromyalgia in general … Chasing [a cure] with medicine doesn’t seem to work. The people who seem to me to do best sort of figure it out on their own by thinking about things, getting to know themselves, and making changes in their lives to accommodate who they’ve become.”

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases:

“Many people with fibromyalgia also report varying degrees of success with complementary and alternative therapies, including massage, movement therapies (such as Pilates and the Feldenkrais method), chiropractic treatments, acupuncture, and various herbs and dietary supplements for different fibromyalgia symptoms.”

Proteolytic Enzymes May Help Remedy a Build-up of Fibrin in Fibromyalgia

The word fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term “fibro,” for fibrous tissue, and the Greek words “myo” (muscle) and “algia” (pain),  and this gives a great clue to one of the most preferred, safe and natural treatments for this condition.

According to Dr. William Wong, ND, PhD.:

“ … in FMS [fibromyalgia syndrome] we have a build-up of fibrin (the fibro of Fibromyalgia) through and across striated muscle around the body. There is also the growth of fibrin in the micro-circulation essentially plugging these tiny blood vessels in the affected areas.

The combo of decreased blood supply, with the strangulating effect of the fibrin on muscle tissue … creates the environment of ischemia [(the lack of oxygen or Adenosine Tri Phosphate for the cells to breathe, leading to pain)].

What can be done to decrease the fibrosis? Until recently, nothing! There has been really nothing in either the allopathic or naturopathic armamentum that was capable of lysing away scar tissue or fibrosis … [but] with the advent of oral systemic enzyme research and application all branches of the healing arts now have a powerful and effective tool for the safe lysing away of fibrosis.”

In short, the pain and suffering of fibromyalgia have been linked to an excess of fibrin in your muscle tissues. Known as fibrosis, this condition can spread to affect every muscle and organ in your body.

Fortunately, it doesn’t take long to reverse fibrin overgrowth. The key is re-activating your body’s natural fibrin clean-up crew, which is made of proteolytic enzymes, a group of systemic enzymes responsible for breaking down protein molecules.

7 Secrets for Better Results and Fast Workout Recovery

7 Secrets for Better Results and Fast Workout Recovery - Read on here to find out How Do Olympic Athletes Get Better Results and Fast Workout Recovery which you can also use for yourself after your workouts.
The Secret Weapon Olympic Athletes Use to Recover from Intense Workouts Much Faster

There is arguably no more important event in an athlete’s life than the Olympic games.

And this year at the Winter Olympics in Sochi we’ve already seen phenomenal tests of strength, endurance and dedication as the athletes compete to be world champions. This doesn’t come without years of practice, discipline and drive … as well as one heck of a recovery program!

How is it that Olympic athletes can train so hard, day in and day out, without succumbing to injury, physical stress, strain, and pain? And if their secret recovery program works so well for them (while pushing themselves to the extremes of physical and emotional limits), imagine what it could do for YOU in your life …

How Do Olympic Athletes Get Better Results and Fast Workout Recovery?

There’s no one right answer to this, as each athlete’s program is carefully tailored to their needs, although there are some similarities throughout.

For starters, you can bet that each athlete has a veritable army of professionals to guide them. We’re talking nutritionists, strength coaches, physiologists, psychologists, coaches … and more.

As an Olympic athlete, every aspect of their performance is analyzed and tended to, right down to what they eat for breakfast.

As reported by Wired:

“Rather than just eating their Wheaties like Bruce Jenner, they guzzle beet juice before a workout, because their team of nutritionists has determined that the nitrates it contains can improve aerobic exercise performance by as much as 2 percent.

They don’t just rub Bengay on tired muscles, they follow elaborate hydrotherapy regimens to limit muscle damage and reduce soreness by 16 percent.

And instead of pounding out hour after hour of training, they sometimes do a targeted workout of insanely high intensity, approved by their physiologists, which can give them better results in as little as four minutes.”

Some of the ‘secret’ foods enjoyed by Olympians to improve their performance and recovery include:

  • Almond butter and honey sandwiches, to provide energy and boost endurance

  • Chocolate milk (post-exercise), for its mix of carbohydrates and protein

  • Beet juice, to help muscles use oxygen more efficiently

The German and Austrian Olympic Teams Ordered 1 Million of These Prior to the 1998 Winter Games …

Cortisone and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used to be the go-to treatment for pain among athletes. But that is changing. Fed up with their significant side effects, and looking for a safer, more effective avenue of relief, some Olympic teams are turning to proteolytic enzymes, which research shows may speed recovery and lessen pain after intense exercise.

Dr. Joseph Keul, a sports medicine physician, was among the first to use proteolytic enzymes to help Olympic athletes recover from injuries. They were so effective that the German and Austrian Olympic teams order more than 1 million tablets of the enzymes prior to the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Research shows, for instance:

People with sports-related ankle injuries who took proteolytic enzymes had faster healing and less time away from training (reduced by about 50%)

Proteolytic enzymes significantly speed healing of bruises and other mild athletic injuries as well as finger fractures

Further, as reported by PR Newswire:

“Systemic [proteolytic] enzymes have been shown in numerous studies to support recovery from muscle and joint pain following strenuous exercise. In one study of boxers published in The Practitioner, systemic enzymes significantly reduced injuries such as cuts, broken vessels, bruising and sprains prior to entering the ring.

In another placebo-controlled study, 22 of 44 patients with sprained ankles received systemic enzymes for 10 days, and were found to have less pain and swelling, and greater mobility than the control group. More than 20 additional studies have confirmed the use of enzymes to promote recovery from injuries.

Other studies suggest that systemic enzymes may also help lessen the wearing away of muscle tissue caused by over-training.”

If It’s Good Enough for Olympic Athletes …

Then surely it’s good enough for helping you avoid post-workout pain and strains … as well as to help heal ongoing chronic pain of all kinds. The fact is, even if you’re just heading home from the gym or a weekend tennis match, the proper recovery will ensure that you’re able to heal and repair the ‘damage’ that exercise caused so you’ll grow stronger and be able to work out even harder next time.

Among the most important elements are a proper cool down (5-10 minutes of low intensity exercise at the end of your workout), stretching and hydration. However, perhaps most important is reaching for a bottle of Heal-n-Soothe, which is an all-natural inflammation fighter that promotes healthy muscle repair.

Heal-n-Soothe’s secret weapon for your recovery is its concentrated dose of proteolytic enzymes, which eat excess fibrin and scar tissue for lunch, helping every microscopic muscle tear to heal properly to deliver a full range of motion while reducing inflammation, tightness and pain.

These enzymes work at a cellular level, ensuring your workout recovery starts from the inside out (plus, it also contains 12 of nature’s best anti-inflammatory compounds).

6 More Secret Weapons Olympians Use to Get Better Results and Fast Workout Recovery

Not all of the recovery efforts of Olympic athletes are as simple and foundational as proteolytic enzyme therapy. Other methods include:

  1. Prolotherapy: Prolotherapy stimulates localized inflammation to help your body heal areas with lower blood supply (such as tendons and ligaments) — the exact opposite effect of cortisone shots. Prolotherapy has been found to help tendons and ligaments rebuild as much as 40% stronger than the originals. If you have joint pain, you may be interested to try prolozone therapy, which adds critically important components to standard prolotherapy: ozone and nutrients to facilitate healing and repair.

  1. Acupuncture: Acupuncture works to realign meridians of energy by stimulating a certain combination of 2,000 points on the body. The practice most likely relieves pain by stimulating your central nervous system to release hormones and neurotransmitters and boost your immune system.

  1. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: With this therapy a vial of your blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma. The PRP is injected into the site of your injury, where it is said to release growth factors that facilitate tissue healing.

  1. Magnetic Pulse Therapy: This involves sending short rapid pulses of a specific electromagnetic frequency into the knee or other problem area, where it causes a biochemical response that relieves pain felt from inflammation.

  1. Low-Intensity Laser Therapy: The lasers are able to penetrate beneath your skin and can stimulate normal cell activity, speed up healing and reduce inflammation.

  1. Infrared Sauna Therapy: The far-infrared heat used in this type of sauna leads to vibration effects at the molecular level, which improves transportation of oxygen and nutrients, ultimately helping to support regeneration and healing.

The thermal effect of deep heat on your tissues causes blood vessels in capillaries to dilate, which improves blood circulation and promotes pain-relief healing and wellness. You can get this same benefit at home by using a far-infrared heating pad <– click here to see our top recommendation!

What is interesting to note is that many of these therapies … proteolytic enzymes, acupuncture, nutrition and infrared heat … can be used simply by anyone looking to improve their athletic performance and recovery. They’re not just for Olympians!

So if you’re a weekend warrior, a gym rat, a star on your local softball team … or if you have aches and pains that you want healed for good, do give these a try (and be sure to stay tuned to the blog for more pain-relieving, healing tips).

P.S.

I forgot to mention one more pain relief strategy that two-time USA Olympian Debbi Lawrence said helps her “recover from intense workouts much faster” and her “legs have never felt better.” You can read about it here.

Here are 6 Remarkable Natural Treatments for Gout

Here are 6 Remarkable Natural Treatments for Gout - These are the 6 natural treatments for gout you can follow if you are suffering from intense, painful, swelling joints.
An All-Natural, 100% Safe Treatment for Intense, Painful, Swelling Joints

About 3 million Americans suffer from gout, a form of arthritis that leads to intense, painful swelling in your joints. Many people experience their first gout attack in their big toe, which may feel like sharp, intense pain along with swelling and stiffness.

The site of the attack will also be red and hot to the touch. After the big toe, gout may be felt in your ankles, heel and insteps, your knees, wrists and fingers and even your elbows.

Most gout attacks go away on their own without treatment, and there can be months or years before another attack occurs. However, if they occur frequently or if your attack was severe, you may find yourself developing anxiety over when the next gout attack may strike.

Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in your body. Uric acid is a normal waste product, but if your body produces it in excess … or is unable to effectively remove it … it can lead to deposits of urate crystals in and around your joints. These needle-like crystals are responsible for the pain that gout sufferers know all too well.

What Causes Uric Acid Build-Up and Gout?

As for what causes excess uric acid to accumulate in your body, there are a number of factors, including:

Fructose-rich foods and beverages: Fructose induces uric acid generation in your body. Consuming fructose-rich beverages like soda and orange juice, for instance, is associated with an increased risk of gout in women and men.

Certain medications: Low-dose aspirin, diuretics and immunosuppressants may raise uric acid levels.

Excess alcohol: Too much alcohol, especially beer, which is high in purines, may raise uric acid levels and gout risk. In one study, men who drank the most alcohol had double the risk of developing gout as non-drinkers.

According to Harvard Medical School:

“Beer drinkers increased their risk by 50% for every daily serving, while those who drank hard liquor increased their risk by 15% for each drink.”

Red meat and shellfish: These are high in purines, which are metabolized into uric acid.

Kidney problems: Your kidneys help your body keep just the right amount of uric acid in your bloodstream, but if they’re not functioning properly an excess of uric acid may accumulate.

How to Treat Gout Naturally: 6 Natural Treatments for Gout

There are drugs available to treat gout, including allopurinol, which works by reducing your uric acid levels, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to block pain and inflammation. But these drugs do not treat the underlying causes of gout, which can be a lifelong problem.

This means you could potentially need to take these medications for life, exposing yourself to a risk of long-term side effects. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to treat, and prevent, gout naturally:

  1. Eat Cherries

Cherries contain anti-inflammatory antioxidants including anthocyanins and bioflavonoids, which may lower your uric acid levels. People with gout cut their risk of recurrent attacks in half by eating about 20 cherries a day. Cherry extract was also associated with a 40 percent reduction in gout flare-ups.

  1. Lose Weight

Losing weight helps reduce uric acid in your blood, and being overweight is a risk factor for gout. So staying active and eating right to maintain a healthy weight are important to prevent and treat this condition.

  1. Limit Your Intake of Sugary Drinks

Drinking one sugary soda a day raised the risk of gout by 74 percent compared to those who drank soda less than once a month. Drinking two a day raised the risk by 97 percent. Orange juice, which is also rich in fructose, was also problematic, raising the risk of gout by 41 percent among those who drank it daily and 142 percent for twice-daily consumption. As mentioned, excess alcohol should also be avoided.

  1. Drink Coffee

If you enjoy coffee, there’s good news. Long-term consumption is linked to a lower risk of gout in both women and men. Don’t overdo it, of course, and avoid added sweeteners, but a couple of cups of black coffee a day may be beneficial.

  1. Consume Plenty of Vitamin C

Vitamin C, either from dietary sources or via a supplement, is associated with a lower risk of gout, as higher vitamin C intake significantly reduces serum uric acid levels. Foods rich in vitamin C include kiwis, bell peppers, tomatoes, papayas, dark leafy greens, broccoli and citrus fruits.

  1. Proteolytic Enzymes

Gout is, at its foundation, an intense acute inflammatory reaction. This is why the first line of treatment for gout is typically anti-inflammatory therapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Before resorting to anti-inflammatory drugs, watch my Video Here, which uncovers quick and easy ways to reduce inflammation.

Try limiting refined foods and sugar, which are pro-inflammatory, and focus instead on eating an anti-inflammatory diet. You should also embrace relaxation strategies, as stress can cause and exacerbate inflammation.

And, importantly, try the all-natural anti-inflammatory Heal-n-Soothe, which has 12 natural inflammation-fighting ingredients, including systemic proteolytic enzymes. bromelain, turmeric, devil’s claw, boswellia extract, rutin, ginger extract and more.

You simply won’t find a more powerful natural anti-inflammatory anywhere else, which is why anyone facing gout, must give this a try. And don’t worry, there’s absolutely no risk involved.

If you give it a try and don’t think it’s everything I claim, simply return your order within 90 days. You re automatically covered by our 90-Day Money Back Guarantee.

Devil’s claw is an herb native to Africa, particularly the Kalahari and Savannah desert regions of the South and Southeast regions of the country. Its botanical name, Harpagophytum, means “hook plant” in Greek, and it is the tiny hooks all over its fruit that earned it its ominous name.

However, don’t let its name fool you. Devil’s claw actually shows great promise for supporting human health. Historically it has been valued for pain relief and treatment of fever, malaria and liver and kidney problems.

Devil’s claw is also used for skin problems (such as healing sores and boils) and, after it was introduced to Europe in the early 1900s, was used medicinally to restore appetite and relieve heartburn, pain and inflammation.

Devil’s Claw is an Inflammation-Fighting, Pain-Relieving Superstar that Can Stop Painful Back, Joints

Modern-day research supports what our ancestors already knew, which is that this unassuming herb has powerful pain-relieving properties. Devil’s claw contains iridoid glycosides, which are strong anti-inflammatory substances. One iridoid in particular, called harpagoside, has shown particular promise in research studies.

As reported in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology:

“Harpogophytum procumbens [Devil’s claw] is used for a wide variety of health conditions in the form of infusions, decoctions, tinctures, powders and extracts. In addition to the common local use for arthritis and pain, other ethnomedicinal uses include dyspepsia, fever, blood diseases, urinary tract infections, postpartum pain, sprains, sores, ulcers and boils.

Scientific studies revealed that H. procumbens exhibits analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-epileptic, antimicrobial and antimalarial activities amongst others. Iridoid glycosides and phenylpropanoid glycosides have been the focus of phytochemical investigations as the biological activity has been ascribed to the iridoid glycosides (such as harpagoside and harpagide), which are common in nature and are known to possess anti-inflammatory activity.”

Following are some of the most relevant research findings to date:

  • Back and neck pain: Devil’s Claw, in a daily dose of 50 mg or 100 mg harpagoside, reduced back and neck pain more than a plaebo. At a standardized daily dose of 60 mg, meanwhile, Devil’s claw reduced back pain about the same as a daily dose of 12.5 mg of the painkiller Vioxx.

  • Osteoarthritis pain: People treated with Devil’s claw (along with turmeric and bromelain) reported significant improvements in osteoarthritis pain. The researchers concluded that these natural anti-inflammatories may be a “valuable and safe alternative to NSAIDs in patients suffering from degenerative joint diseases.” Research shows Devil’s claw is effective for treating arthritis of the spine, hip and knee.

  • Post-operative and Neuropathic pain: An animal study found that an extract of Devil’s claw has pain-relieving effects for postoperative pain and chronic neuropathic pain.

Devil’s Claw Also Has Antioxidant Powers

Although Devil’s Claw is most widely known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and pain-relieving properties, it has other unique attributes as well, including antioxidant properties.

In fact, researchers suspect that some of Devil’s Claw’s anti-inflammatory power may be due to its antioxidant activity, which prevents both oxidative stress and loss of cell viability.

It’s known that excess free radicals contribute to tissue damage related to inflammation, so the fact that Devil’s claw is also an antioxidant only adds to its impressive benefits.

Devil’s Claw is Just One of the 12 Most Powerful Natural Anti-Inflammatories in Heal-n-Soothe that Can Effectively Stop Painful Back, Joints

Devil’s claw is already widely used in Germany and France, but in the United States it’s still relatively unheard of. This is a shame, since it shows so much promise for relieving pain as well as widely prescribed medications, but with fewer side effects.

As reported by the University of Maryland Medical Center:

“The people who took devil’s claw had as much pain relief as the people who took the [pain] medication. Those who took devil’s claw had fewer side effects and needed fewer pain relievers throughout the study.”

Each serving of all-natural Heal-n-Soothe contains 30 mg of Devil’s claw extract, but that’s not all. It also contains clinically effective doses of Turmeric, Boswellia extract, Bromelain, Rutin, Ginger and more.

In all, this pain-fighting formula contains 12 of nature’s most powerful and safest inflammation fighters. On their own, each of these ingredients has been proven through both clinical studies and thousands of years of use to be safe and effective.

But together, they work synergistically to quickly reduce inflammation and pain.

Heal-n-Soothe not only has the most powerful combination of natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving ingredients, it also has the strongest and highest potency of any proteolytic enzyme formulation available! If you want the benefits of Devil’s claw plus much more, try this amazing blend. You won’t be disappointed, but don’t take my word for it.

You can read recent success stories from people just like you who took a chance and tried Heal-n-Soothe … and finally found lasting pain relief without harmful side effects.

When you visit your doctor you expect to be getting the best advice and treatments that modern medicine has to offer. But the term ‘modern medicine’ is all relative — and doesn’t necessarily equate to the ‘best’ care.

For instance, morphine, opium, arsenic and mercury are all examples of what were once ‘modern-day’ cures. Decades later, hindsight is 20/20, as they say, since we now know the toxicity of such compounds.

It would be naive to believe, however, that there aren’t some well-accepted medical dogmas being regarded as the best standard of care right now, in 2013, that will one day be seen as equally as insane as soothing teething babies with morphine syrup …

Toward that end, we’ve compiled some of the craziest outdated medical procedures, including some that are still in use today, especially in relation to back pain, pain management and weight loss.

Craziest Outdated Medical Procedures from Then and Now

  1. Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery such as gastric banding and gastric bypass is on the rise, but did you know that nearly 40 percent (that’s close to half) of weight-loss surgery patients face serious side effects like malnutrition, infection, liver failure or sometimes death?

Gastric banding is so hit or miss that one in three patients experience band erosion and close to half must have the bands removed (the surgery has a re-operation rate of 60 percent!).

In order to qualify for weight loss surgery, patients typically have to commit to dietary and lifestyle modifications, and many must lose weight prior to the surgery. If you can lose weight, and make diet and exercise changes, for the surgery, you can do it to lose weight without it … and far more safely, at that.

While weight loss surgery does often work, it carries the extreme risk of death and sometimes permanent injury, so choosing to undergo it is a gamble, not unlike using some of the premier weight-loss solutions of the 19th century (like FatOff Obesity Cream, which claimed to ‘reduce superfluous flesh’ with unknown consequences).

  1. Bloodletting

In ancient times, everything from migraine headaches to seizures was treated with bloodletting, in which varying amounts of blood would be drained from your body to rid it of toxins.

It is now believed that many may have died from overzealous bloodletting (including George Washington, who reportedly was drained up 5 to 7 pints in the days leading up to his death).

Interestingly, there may be some merit to bloodletting after all, as research published in 2012 found that obese people with metabolic syndrome had improved blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular disease after just two sessions of blood donation (likely because it reduced their levels of iron).

  1. Bed Rest for Back Pain

It used to be standard to recommend prolonged bed rest to heal back pain, and many physicians still do recommend it. However, now research shows that continuing on with your daily activities leads to better flexibility while bed rest along may make back pain worse (while also leading to depression, blood clots and decreased muscle tone).

It’s now advised that people with back pain resume normal activities as much as possible, and even engage in exercise to speed recovery.

  1. Aspirin or Ibuprofen for Joint Pain

One of the most common uses for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is for treating osteoarthritis, a leading cause of joint pain (NSAIDs include aspirin, Celebrex, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve and others).

But clinical studies show that NSAIDs disrupt cartilage synthesis and actually speed up the destruction of cartilage and joints. In other words, they may actually harm your joints and ultimately make joint pain worse!

You might as well rub on some Hamlin’s Wizard Oil — a popular 1800s-era liniment (that could also be taken internally) that claimed to cure rheumatism and pain (and contained such ingredients as ammonia, chloroform, turpentine and alcohol (up to 70%).

  1. Cocaine for Pain Relief

In the 1800s, you could purchase cocaine drops to take the bite out of a toothache or suck on a cocaine throat lozenge if your throat became scratchy from too much singing or teaching (they were advertised for singers, teachers and orators). Due to its pain-relieving properties, cocaine was also used as anesthetic during surgery.

Think the idea of using cocaine for pain relief is crazy? Today more than 40 people die every day from overdoses involving FDA-approved pain relievers like Vicodin, Oxycontin and methadone.

In fact, overdoses involving prescription painkillers that your doctor will readily prescribe now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined!

  1. Spinal Fusion Surgery

This surgery, which eliminates motion between vertebrae in your spine, is recommended using the quite archaic premise that if your painful vertebrae can be stopped from moving, your pain will be relieved.

But as you might suspect, fusing together vertebrae in your spine does not come without consequence, like less flexibility in your spine and foundational changes in the way your spine can move.

Because spinal fusion surgery places additional stress on surrounding vertebrae, it can actually increase spinal degeneration and is associated with increases in disability, painkiller use and an inability to work.
