When you visit your doctor you expect to be getting the best advice and treatments that modern medicine has to offer. But the term ‘modern medicine’ is all relative — and doesn’t necessarily equate to the ‘best’ care.

 

For instance, morphine, opium, arsenic and mercury are all examples of what were once ‘modern-day’ cures. Decades later, hindsight is 20/20, as they say, since we now know the toxicity of such compounds.

 

It would be naive to believe, however, that there aren’t some well-accepted medical dogmas being regarded as the best standard of care right now, in 2013, that will one day be seen as equally as insane as soothing teething babies with morphine syrup …

 

Toward that end, we’ve compiled some of the craziest outdated medical procedures, including some that are still in use today, especially in relation to back pain, pain management and weight loss.

 

Craziest Outdated Medical Procedures from Then and Now

 

  1. Weight Loss Surgery

 

Weight loss surgery such as gastric banding and gastric bypass is on the rise, but did you know that nearly 40 percent (that’s close to half) of weight-loss surgery patients face serious side effects like malnutrition, infection, liver failure or sometimes death?

 

Gastric banding is so hit or miss that one in three patients experience band erosion and close to half must have the bands removed (the surgery has a re-operation rate of 60 percent!).

 

In order to qualify for weight loss surgery, patients typically have to commit to dietary and lifestyle modifications, and many must lose weight prior to the surgery. If you can lose weight, and make diet and exercise changes, for the surgery, you can do it to lose weight without it … and far more safely, at that.

 

While weight loss surgery does often work, it carries the extreme risk of death and sometimes permanent injury, so choosing to undergo it is a gamble, not unlike using some of the premier weight-loss solutions of the 19th century (like FatOff Obesity Cream, which claimed to ‘reduce superfluous flesh’ with unknown consequences).

 

  1. Bloodletting

 

In ancient times, everything from migraine headaches to seizures was treated with bloodletting, in which varying amounts of blood would be drained from your body to rid it of toxins.

 

It is now believed that many may have died from overzealous bloodletting (including George Washington, who reportedly was drained up 5 to 7 pints in the days leading up to his death).

 

Interestingly, there may be some merit to bloodletting after all, as research published in 2012 found that obese people with metabolic syndrome had improved blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular disease after just two sessions of blood donation (likely because it reduced their levels of iron).

 

  1. Bed Rest for Back Pain

 

It used to be standard to recommend prolonged bed rest to heal back pain, and many physicians still do recommend it. However, now research shows that continuing on with your daily activities leads to better flexibility while bed rest along may make back pain worse (while also leading to depression, blood clots and decreased muscle tone).

 

It’s now advised that people with back pain resume normal activities as much as possible, and even engage in exercise to speed recovery.

 

  1. Aspirin or Ibuprofen for Joint Pain

 

One of the most common uses for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is for treating osteoarthritis, a leading cause of joint pain (NSAIDs include aspirin, Celebrex, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve and others).

 

But clinical studies show that NSAIDs disrupt cartilage synthesis and actually speed up the destruction of cartilage and joints. In other words, they may actually harm your joints and ultimately make joint pain worse!

 

You might as well rub on some Hamlin’s Wizard Oil — a popular 1800s-era liniment (that could also be taken internally) that claimed to cure rheumatism and pain (and contained such ingredients as ammonia, chloroform, turpentine and alcohol (up to 70%).

 

  1. Cocaine for Pain Relief

 

In the 1800s, you could purchase cocaine drops to take the bite out of a toothache or suck on a cocaine throat lozenge if your throat became scratchy from too much singing or teaching (they were advertised for singers, teachers and orators). Due to its pain-relieving properties, cocaine was also used as anesthetic during surgery.

 

Think the idea of using cocaine for pain relief is crazy? Today more than 40 people die every day from overdoses involving FDA-approved pain relievers like Vicodin, Oxycontin and methadone.

 

In fact, overdoses involving prescription painkillers that your doctor will readily prescribe now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined!

 

  1. Spinal Fusion Surgery

 

This surgery, which eliminates motion between vertebrae in your spine, is recommended using the quite archaic premise that if your painful vertebrae can be stopped from moving, your pain will be relieved.

 

But as you might suspect, fusing together vertebrae in your spine does not come without consequence, like less flexibility in your spine and foundational changes in the way your spine can move.

 

Because spinal fusion surgery places additional stress on surrounding vertebrae, it can actually increase spinal degeneration and is associated with increases in disability, painkiller use and an inability to work.

You’ve probably heard of the danger of high heels. But they’re far from the only culprits.

 

Many common shoe styles are terrible for your muscles and joints. They cause you to change how you walk, how you run, and even how you stand. All leading to muscle imbalances causing that “mystery” back pain.

 

Back pain from your shoes only gets worse with time. Women take an average of 5,210 steps each day, and men take 7,192 steps daily. Each step is a chance for you to do the right thing for your back — or a chance to reinforce back problems when you’re wearing the wrong shoes.

High Heels

 

High heels are guilty of causing back pain in both men and women. While women may recognize that sky-high stilettos are a problem, men may not realize that dress shoes and cowboy boots are the same as high heels as far as their muscles and joints are concerned.

 

The angle of any heel over an inch high can cause you to walk with your back arched and your knees slightly bent. This forces your quadriceps to work overtime, shortens your calf muscles, and puts 200% more stress on your kneecaps as you move.

 

All that shifted muscle and joint strain rolls up into your spine. While you can try to compensate by stretching your muscles at the end of each day, it’s better to never, ever wear high heels. You may not win any fashion awards, but your back will thank you.

 

Flats

 

Eliminating high heels doesn’t mean you should run straight to flat shoes, either. Many of the flats on the market offer absolutely nothing in the way of support for your feet as you walk. According to lab tests, flats cause 25% more impact pressure on your foot with every step than high heels do!

 

Impact pressure builds over time, turning into a hammer driving up your leg thousands of times a day. Your hips and lower back take the brunt of it, leaving you with constant back pain from your unsupportive flat shoes.

 

The lack of padding and arch support in flats also causes the ligaments and tendons in your feet to overstretch. This can cause painful fallen arches and contribute to plantar fasciitis. And the more your feet hurt, the less you’ll exercise, starting a vicious cycle of poor health that could keep you in pain for life.

Toning Shoes

 

As a way to overcompensate for not exercising enough, millions of people are trying out shaping or toning shoes. Bad move.

 

Toning shoes are terrible for back pain sufferers. The hype around toning shoes – also called “rockers” due to their curved bottoms – is that they help you burn extra fat throughout the day to improve the look of your legs.

 

Or so say a number of shoe company sponsored studies, but “depending on how they conduct the study, they can prove anything they want to prove,” says Dr. Cedric Bryant, Chief Science Officer at the American Council on Exercise.

 

The shoes “work” by adding deliberate instability to your gait, causing your muscles to work overtime. Think about that for a minute. You will pay $100 – $250 for a pair of shoes that make you less steady on your feet than normal and put more stress on your muscles and joints.

 

Even worse? Toning shoes don’t actually tone your legs or help you lose weight, according to independent clinical trials conducted at the Exercise and Health Program at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. In heart rate tests, calorie burning tests, and exertion tests, toning and rocker shoes were statistically identical to regular running shoes.

 

Instead of weight loss or toned muscles, researchers found that you are more likely to experience sore muscles and aching joints after wearing expensive toning shoes. The thick soles of the shoes also prevent your foot from flexing naturally as you walk, flattening your arch and making your body absorb more of the impact from each step. This leads to pain in your back, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.

 

Rocker and toning shoes are particularly hard on weak ankles and knees. Since your foot can’t flex naturally and your gait is unstable, these joints have to compensate to keep you upright. This boosts your risk of joint injury and contributes to the muscle imbalances responsible for long-term back pain.

 

Flip Flops

 

The last shoe to avoid like the plague is the flip flop. These casual favorites may seem breezy and comfortable, but flip flops sabotage your spine with every step.

 

It all comes down to your toes. To keep flip flops from falling off as you walk, you have to bunch up your toes. This compromises your ability to use the front of your foot to move forward and your hips will overcompensate to keep you moving. The result is lower body fatigue, muscle imbalances along the back of your leg, and an aching, tender lower back.

 

Thin, cheap flip flops do the most damage. There’s no cushion for your soles and no support in your toes. You may have a pair in every color of the rainbow, but you are 2.5 times less stable in flip flops than sneakers.

 

You also take smaller steps than normal in flip flops and experience more impact pressure as you walk, adding stress to your spine and making you more likely to skip walking in favor of sitting in a car.

Avoid Back Pain With Supportive, Flexible Shoes

 

High heels, flats, toning shoes, and flip flops are all shoes to avoid if you have back pain. Instead, you should invest in supportive, flexible shoes that cushion your feet as you walk. While sneakers and running shoes are a smart choice, any well-designed and practical piece of footwear will help fight back pain.

 

This doesn’t mean you have to shop in the orthopedic section or wear clunky “grandma shoes” all the time. There are millions of affordable, attractive pairs of shoes that also give your feet what they need to keep your spine healthy and your back happy. Look for:

 

  • Shoes with a low heel (not more than an inch of elevation for men or women)
  • Shoes with a contoured insole to support your arch
  • Shoes that flex with your foot without rolling up in flimsy balls or feeling stiff as boards
  • Shoes with at least half an inch of wiggle room in the toes to allow for proper flexing and gripping as you walk
  • Shoes that feel comfortable in the store without pinching or binding your foot — and please don’t count on stretch or “breaking in” your shoes when buying footwear!
  • Shoes that carry a seal of acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association

 

By keeping these tips to avoid back pain in mind as you shop for your next pair of shoes, you can build a closet full of comfortable shoes that will keep your back happy. It may seem like a small thing, but getting the worst shoes for back pain out of your life could be just what you need to do now to help lose your back pain for good.

Is It Safe to do Exercises after Back Surgery?  Why the best approach for treating back pain is not to ask yourself is it safe to do exercises after back surgery but to ask yourself whether you have addressed your muscle imbalances? Read on to find out more.

Many people want to, but have never been given any specific instructions or guidelines to follow regarding the question – Is it safe to do exercises after back surgery and what exercises to do? Some surgeons believe the surgery itself helps correct the problem. Most often than not, the problem was not addressed by the surgery.

The surgery only addresses either a sign or symptom caused by the true problem. Most disc injuries and arthritic conditions develop and progress over a long period of time. Typically, if there is a traumatic event, such as a fall, a motor vehicle accident or job related injury, the body will heal itself over an unspecified period of time.

On rare occasions, a traumatic back injury will require immediate surgery. There are always additional conditions that impact the health of the spine. Those conditions include the following, but are not exhaustive:

 

  • lower extremity muscle imbalances
  • weak abdominal and lower back muscles
  • restricted spinal range of motion
  • leg length discrepancy
  • gait asymmetry
  • improper biomechanics that are necessary for a particular job or sport
  • other physical limitations that effect the hip, knee, ankle, foot, and/or upper back

 

Addressing these physical limitations, especially after surgery, are paramount to the success of the surgery. For example, if you undergo a lumbar fusion in which two vertebrae are fused together, the vertebrae above and below tend to be the targets of future potential injury.

If the above conditions are not addressed, you run the risk of further injury and possible surgeries. Simple, easy to perform exercises can help eliminate those factors which can lead to further injury.

 

The success of the surgery, in my opinion, is directly related to what happens after the surgery. More importantly, addressing the physical limitations prior to surgery may even eliminate the need for surgery, and if not, it will provide a good foundation for recovery following the surgery.

 

What can I do?

 

The first thing you need to do it ask your surgeon, to give you a list of instructions, of the motions that you can and cannot do and make sure that they indicate if they are temporally or are they for ever.

 

For example If you have had a Total Hip Replacement there are motions, that you can never do and only your surgeon can tell you what they are based on the type of procedure and the hardware that they used.

 

Where do I Start?

 

Sounds like a simple question but there is are some considerations, Pain level, tolerance to activity, is the surgical site stable…the list of considerations can go on and on so let’s imagine we get past all of the physical limitations and now we have to start were we are and how we are.

What is the state of your physical being, to start you need to identify imbalances in your physical being, you must first be assessed or assess yourself, looking for muscle imbalances and postural dysfunctions and then a well-planned corrective exercise program can be established.

 

Why look for Postural Dysfunction after surgery?

 

Postural dysfunctions, take into account the position of your pelvis and the curvature of your spine. The trouble is, if your pelvis is not in the most neutral position you spine will have abnormal curvature and that abnormal curvature is what cause excessive wear and tear on the muscles, joints, ligaments and yes it can also cause the discs to start to bulge.

The postural dysfunctions you have are also a factor in your recovery after surgery, please understand that just because the bulging or herniation part of the disc was removed that does not mean the forces that cause the disc to herniated in the first place have been eliminated, that is not true.

If you do not address your postural dysfunctions those same forces will begin working on other discs in your back and the process will start all over again. That is why back surgeries have such a high failure rate after 5 years.

The surgery very well many have eliminated the irritation that was on the nerve but it sure did not address the root cause of the problem. Please be sure that all measures taken after the surgery address both your postsurgical pain and postural dysfunctions.

 

Is it Safe to do Exercises after Back Surgery?

 

Please understand that the term “back pain exercise” is a misnomer, let me explain, you would not want to exercise your back pain would you? NO, of course not, then you must have mean what exercises should you do to strengthen my back, well guess what that may not be what you need to do to get pain either.

You see regardless of your condition and within the limitations of your surgery your main focus need to be on getting your body back to a more neutral, more balanced and more stable state in order to insure that the surgery is a success.

The best way to insure that is accomplished is to address your muscle imbalances and only do very specific stretches and exercises that are appropriate for you and your current condition and the only way to know what it is that you need to be doing is to assess your body as a whole looking at your posture.

 

So the best approach is not ask yourself is it safe to do exercises after back surgery but to ask yourself whether you have addressed your muscle imbalances.
