One of my good friends likes to say his hair is not going gray… it’s just running out of paint.

But scientifically speaking, he’s really not that far off!

As we age, our hair actually runs out of the pigment melanin, the same cell that gives skin its color. Each hair follicle has a finite amount of melanin cells. As they run out, the hair slowly turns gray, then finally white when there is no pigment left at all.

But you’d think by now we’d have discovered a more effective way to keep hair color than getting it chemically treated a few times a year. While there’s no one-size-fits-all, clinically-proven regimen, there are many theories and studies that have shown promise for prevention of premature graying, further graying, and even gray hair reversal.

I’m not sure it’s possible to prevent gray hair forever, but diagnosing one of the following causes of one or more of these natural tricks and treatments could help keep your locks in high definition color for longer.

3 Major Risk Factors for Premature Graying

Smoking

Smoking has been known to increase the rate of graying hair. One study published in the Indian Dermatology Online Journal showed that smokers were a whopping 2.5 times more likely to experience premature hair graying (graying before age 30) than non-smokers. If you haven’t quit smoking yet, it’s definitely time!

Vitamin B Deficiency

The hair care company Pantene Pro-V knew their stuff when they formulated their shampoos and conditioners. Vitamin B deficiency, especially pantothenic acid (B5) and B12, can cause low melanin production.

This deficiency can also lead to pernicious anemia. Anemics may also suffer from premature hair graying.

Untreated Thyroid Condition

Low thyroid hormone – or hypothyroidism – can also cause premature hair graying, according to Dr. Lawrence Wood, head of the Thyroid Foundation of America.

9 Natural Treatments for Gray Hair

Treating your gray hair may be as easy as quitting a cigarette habit, taking a vitamin B complex, or getting tested for anemia and hypothyroidism. (If you suspect you’re anemic or hypothyroid, you should get tested regardless of gray hair!)

There are also several natural options for maintaining or restoring hair color, including…

  • Henna extract, which treats gray hair naturally by combining your hair’s proteins with its reddish-tinted molecules. It’s like hair color without the harsh chemicals, hefty salon bill, or huge time commitment.

  • Amla fruit extracthas 30 times more vitamin C than an orange. It fights free radical damage on your hair’s color cells (melanocytes), allowing them to continue producing color for longer.

  • Red hibiscus extracthas been said to fight grays at the root – while promoting faster hair growth.

  • Kudzu extractwas recently shown to reduce formation of new gray hairs over a six-month period. There were no adverse effects reported.

You can also get double the bang for your buck by using your daily supplements for treating unwanted grays.

  • Vitamin C fights oxidative stress in your body, which can help increase melanin and overall hair production. It also boosts collagen production (more on that in a moment).

  • Vitamin B12 is a critical building block for healthy, colored hair. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause gray hair even in children, according to Stanford Med’s Dr. Alan Green.

  • Vitamin D helps grow healthy hair – and there are tons of anecdotal evidence to support it can actually reverse gray hair.

  • Vitamin K2, or menaquinone, is a fat-soluble vitamin. Studies show 90% of the western world is deficient in K2. Low K2 causes kidney stress, with the result often appearing in facial wrinkling and decreased health and color of hair.

  • Collagen makes up 25% of the protein in our bodies. Though it’s commonly ascribed to healthy skin and nails, hair follicles require plenty of collagen to produce thick, healthy hairs – and plenty of pigment to maintain their natural color.

It’s tricky to find a good quality supplement with these vitamins and collagen.

Strangely enough, I recently realized the Healthy Back Institute’s Super Joint Support supplement has them all. Now, it was formulated to support healthy joints, while reducing stiffness and pain in the process.

Now you can get double the bang for your buck… enjoying healthier, less painful and more limber joints while keeping gray hair at bay. It’s a two-for-one punch, all in one capsule!

It could take up to six months to notice a difference in your hair when taking supplements. But you’ll notice a near instant decrease in stiffness and pain in your joints – a nice bonus while waiting for your hair to catch up!

Most of us know how to take basic care of our hair, but we also do a lot of damage to it on a regular basis. If you are coloring your hair, blow drying it, brushing it while it is wet, swimming in a pool, or using a flat iron, then chances are that it is not nearly as healthy as it could be.

Learning how to repair damaged hair is something that will help your hair look better in the short term, but it will also help it to grow faster, longer, and remain thicker throughout your entire life.

There are a number of ways through which you can repair the damaged hair. The most common method of how to repair damaged hair is to use a thick conditioner on a regular basis. Obviously, one should be used after washing your hair, but you should also start using an intensive conditioner at least once a week.

You can make your own conditioner out of ingredients such as honey or avocado, or you can use an oil-based humectant that will help to repair your hair and prevent further damage. This method might take an hour or so out of your week, but it is an affordable and very easy way to ensure you have healthy hair for a long time.

Following are some recipes you can use at home to prepare your own repairing hair mask to regain the shine in your hair.

Avocado Banana Repairing Hair Mask

This recipe is made from avocado and banana. The ingredients are, avocado (half), banana (1 medium-sized), one egg, honey (2 tablespoons), buttermilk (3 tablespoons), extra virgin olive oil (3 tablespoons).

Firstly, you take banana, egg and avocado in a medium-sized bowl and mash them together. Then add the remaining ingredients of the hair mask and mix them well. Then apply the mask thoroughly to your hair, starting from the roots and leave it for half an hour. Use a shampoo with moisturizing content to wash the hair mask.
Banana and Olive Oil Repairing Hair Mask

If you have hair damaged from chemicals (perms, hair straightening or hair coloring), hair tool use (flat irons, curling irons or blow dryers) or chlorine and the sun, try this banana and olive oil mask to help fix those damaged tresses.

Bananas are rich in tryptophan, an essential amino acid that can help strengthen hair, and potassium, a mineral which helps hair maintain a healthy pH balance.

For this repairing hair mask, you will need 1 banana, 1 tablespoon of olive or coconut oil (you can also use almond oil). You put the ingredients in a blender and blend them well until they form a smooth paste. You can add a dash of flour if paste is too runny.

Firstly, you separate your hair into 3-5 sections. Apply mask to each section from roots to ends. You tie your hair into a loose bun if long and place a shower cap over hair. Keep it on for 30 minutes and then rinse out, shampooing and conditioning as usual.

Egg and Olive Oil Repairing Hair Mask

To prepare this repairing hair mask, you just need 2 eggs, 5 tablespoons of extra virgin Olive oil and 7 drops of lavender essential oil.

First, you blend the eggs in a blender and drizzle in the olive oil slowly. Once you get a thick mayonnaise-like consistency, add the lavender essential oil.

Section your hair and apply this concoction. Make sure that you coat your hair from root to tip. Once the mask is dry, you can wash your hair with water. Shampoo and condition as usual.
Fenugreek Seed and Honey Repairing Hair Mask

To create this repairing hair mask, you will need 5 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds, 1 tablespoon of raw organic honey (preferably manuka honey) and 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil.

First, you need to soak the fenugreek seeds overnight. Drain them from water and grind them to a fine paste. Add the honey and olive oil to this paste and combine well. Apply this paste on your hair and allow it to dry. After 15-20 minutes, wash your hair with shampoo.
Mango Banana Repairing Hair Mask

To prepare this repairing hair mask, you need half of a ripe mango, 1 ripe banana, half a cup of plain yogurt (preferably Greek yogurt) and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.

First you peel and cut the mango into small slices and put into a food processor or blender. Next you peel and break the banana into small chunks and put into the food processor or blender. After this, you add in yogurt and lastly the coconut oil to the mango-banana mixture and blend well until the mixture reaches the consistency of porridge.

You can now apply this mixture onto your damp hair, starting from the scalp and working all the way down to hair ends. You can tie the hair into a bun and just let the mixture stay on your hair for at least 15 minutes before you rinse off.

Mayonnaise Avocado Repairing Hair Mask

You can also prepare a mayonnaise and avocado hair mask. The ingredients required are, one small mayonnaise jar and half avocado. Mash the avocado in a bowl and add mayonnaise to it. Mash them together to form a green minty colored mixture. Apply this mask thoroughly from your roots to tips and leave for 20 minutes. Later wash the hair mask with a gentle shampoo.
Milk and Honey Repairing Hair Mask

This milk and honey mask is perfect for brittle, damaged hair that tends to be thin and easily weighed down by heavy conditioners and oil treatments. Use cream if you have coarse hair, skim milk if you have fine hair.

To create this repairing hair mask, you will need 2 cups whole milk (use cream if you have super coarse hair or low-fat milk for fine hair) and 2 teaspoons of raw organic honey (preferably manuka honey). If you use low-fat milk, add a teaspoon of flour to thicken this mask.

First, you warm up the milk in the microwave so it’s not too hot to the touch. Next, you add the honey and stir until fully dissolved. If you use low-fat milk, add a teaspoon of flour to thicken mask, otherwise it won’t stay on hair.

Now, you can pour the mixture over your dry hair, massaging the mixture into your hair to ensure all strands are covered. You can place a shower cap over hair. Leave this for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo as you normally would.

Pumpkin and Yogurt Repairing Hair Mask

To make this repairing hair mask, you will need 2 cups of pumpkin (chopped), 1 tablespoon of yogurt (preferably Greek yogurt), 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of raw organic honey (preferably manuka honey).

First, you need to blend the chopped pumpkin along with the yogurt, coconut oil and honey until you have a thick paste. If you find the mixture to be too thick, add a few drops of water. Dampen your hair and apply this mask on your hair evenly. After 15 minutes, rinse your hair with water, and shampoo as usual.
Strawberry Mayonnaise Repairing Hair Mask

This hair mask will give you conditioned hair with a nice shine. You require eight strawberries and one tablespoon mayonnaise to prepare this hair mask recipe for dry, damaged hair. Mix both the ingredients well to form the hair mask. Dampen your hair before applying the hair mask. Later massage the mixture to your hair and wash with a regular shampoo.
Yogurt and Honey Repairing Hair Mask

To prepare this repairing hair mask, you will need half a cup of plain yogurt (preferably Greek yogurt), 3 tablespoons of raw organic honey (preferably manuka honey), 3 Vitamin E gel caplets, 1 egg yolk and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.

First, you pierce the gel caplets to empty the contents which will be mixed with the honey. Next you add in the remaining ingredients to form a smooth paste. You can now apply this on your hair and let the mixture remain on your hair for at least 30 minutes before you rinse off.

This mask is suitable for all hair types and is especially good for treating brittle, frizzy and dry hair. You should use this mask for once a week if you want to have healthy and shiny hair.

Herbal Hair Dyeing To Reverse Grey Hair

Besides using herbal hair dyeing, a proper diet and stress free atmosphere is the key to reverse grey hair prematurely. For more ideas to get rid of grey hair, you can read more about this from Joseph Maynard’s Reversing The Gray in which he will reveal how he uses all natural ingredients to reverse gray hair in 90 days.

Grey hair can make you look older than your age which can be both embarrassing and worrisome. But colouring your hair with chemical-laden dye may not be the best for your health. Did you know that nearly 10% of consumers now use natural hair dye to colour their hair?

The hair colouring market captures a little over one billion dollars a year from consumers wanting to change their hair colour or cover the grey that inevitably appears with age. Unfortunately, the chemicals in the products break down the hair cuticle and eventually cause hair to appear dead and lifeless.

Here are a few herbs that you can use to reverse grey hair.

Sage

Sage is an herb that can be boiled to make a brown hair dye. The dye is only temporary, lasting four to six weeks, but the herbs are relatively inexpensive so you can reapply the dye as needed. These temporary home remedy hair colours are also called rinses, since you rinse your hair with them rather than applying a paste like dye.

Boil 2 cups of water and add 1/2 cup dry sage leaves. Let the infusion steep for 2 hours, then strain out the leaves. Wash your hair as usual.  After rinsing it thoroughly, pour the infusion onto your hair and let it soak in for 1/2 hour then rinse it out. Do this daily until your hair darkens and weekly to maintain the colour. This rinse works especially well for hiding grey in dark hair.

Chamomile

Chamomile tea is a good way to darken grey hair, particularly if you have a lighter hair colour. Boil the tea leaves in water for 30 minutes. After the tea cools, pour it through a piece of cloth or a sieve into the jar. Wash and rinse your hair as usual.

Apply the tea solution to your hair as if it were commercial hair dye, making sure that the solution is evenly distributed. Leave on hair for at least one hour and then rinse your hair with cool water in the shower. Do not shampoo your hair for at least 24 hours.

Rosemary and Sage

Rosemary is a magnificent herb which is widely respected for its value as a hair and beauty aide. Rosemary can also be used in the bath, on the face and as a body or scalp massage.

Believed to stimulate hair follicles and hair growth, rosemary is generally believed to slow down or even permanently hold off premature hair loss and grey hair.

When rosemary is used together with sage, they make an excellent covering for grey, especially if used regularly. Mix rosemary and sage in water and boil for 30 minutes. After this, allow the mixture to steep for 2 to 3 hours. Separate the tea leaves from the mixture. Wash and rinse your hair. Apply the mixture on your hair and massage it into your scalp. Let it rest for around 5 minutes, and then rinse it out.

Walnut husk

With walnut husks and water, a homemade dye can be prepared. After boiling walnut husks in water for 15 minutes, strain the mixture and apply on your hair. This treatment darkens your grey for up to six weeks and the colour won’t fade even if you wash your hair daily.

Amla (Indian gooseberry)

Amla (Indian gooseberry) paste enhances hair growth and pigmentation, so regular massaging and rubbing into your hair could reverse the greying process. You can also boil dried amla fruit pieces in coconut oil until it turns black (like charred dust) and apply the oil to your hair to prevent greying or to turn it a black colour.

Coconut oil

One of the most effective natural remedies to reverse grey hair is regular application of coconut oil. Use pure coconut oil for massaging the scalp each night before going to bed and wash next day. You can also add curry leaves or henna leaves (whichever you prefer) in coconut oil and heat for a few minutes. Use the oil with curry leaves or henna leaves for massaging the scalp. After about 35 minutes, rinse your hair.

A word of caution here is just because a product is natural or herbal does not make it absolutely safe. Be sure to do a test before leaving any sort of dye on your head for a long period. To do a basic allergy test, swab a bit of hair dye mix on your inner lower arm. Wait a day. If you have burning, itching or any other reaction, don’t put the mix on your head.

Besides using herbal hair dyeing, a proper diet and stress free atmosphere is the key to reverse grey hair prematurely. For more ideas to get rid of grey hair, click on Reversing The Grey.

When grey hair starts to grow on your scalp, it is understandable that you will also begin to feel embarrassed. Grey hair is usually a sign of old age, but not all people with grey hair are old. Thus, knowing how to reverse greying hair will definitely help ease this discomfiture.

If you are looking for products or ways on how to reverse grey hair, you should try to strengthen the body from inside-out. This will mean making some changes to your dietary habits.

We are all aware that a well-balanced diet is good for our body and critical for optimal health and performance.  The same logic also applies to our hair.  A mixture of protein, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and iron are all required for healthy, strong, colorful hair.

To start with, good hair nutrition requires getting enough protein, because our hair is made primarily of protein. You will also need complex carbohydrates to help assemble the proteins for hair growth. Other important vitamins and minerals associate with building good hair are B complex, folic acid, B12, Omega 3 and zinc.

At times, our hair follicles can have low energy levels.  Therefore, it helps a lot if we start our day with food items that are rich in protein. Consider the following food choices for breakfast and the other daily meals in order to give you hair the healthiest opportunity to grow and thrive.

Try eating lean meat twice per week.  It has the protein your hair needs, but also is full of B vitamins, iron and zinc, which are all important for healthy hair.  Poultry, fish and beans are also great choices as they are rich in B vitamins, zinc and protein. Eggs, egg whites and soy are another great protein option, especially for vegetarians.

Salmon and tuna are also great protein choices, which you can have them for breakfast, lunch or dinner.  They are full of B vitamins, including B12, and other vitamins and minerals such as zinc, iron and omega-3 fatty acids.

You will also need to have complex carbohydrates to supply you with energy over a longer period of time (rather than those sugar-rich and refined carbohydrates which exhaust you quickly), with your protein source at meals.

The ideal choice of complex carbohydrates will be brown short-grain rice. It is also a good source of B vitamins and also contains nutrients like magnesium, manganese and zinc.

Whole grain choices complement your protein consumption by helping organize the proteins for the hair to utilize for optimal growth and health.
