It’s estimated that 5 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from fibromyalgia. Most are not diagnosed until middle age, although symptoms often begin earlier, and many are not correctly diagnosed at all.

 

Often considered an arthritis-related condition, fibromyalgia is not actually a form of arthritis. However, it is considered a rheumatic condition that causes impairment to your joints and soft tissues, along with chronic pain and fatigue.

 

Part of what makes fibromyalgia so challenging to diagnosis is that its main symptoms – pain and fatigue – resemble those caused by many other conditions. It’s not unusual for sufferers to visit multiple doctors multiple times before fibromyalgia is mentioned.

  1. Muscle Aches:You may feel a deep aching or burning sensation, or experience the feeling of a pulled muscle that don’t go away.

 

  1. Headaches:Chronic headaches or migraines occur in about half of fibromyalgia sufferers, possibly due to a chemical imbalance in your brain.

 

  1. Tender Points:Pain tends to occur in 18 specific “tender points” in people with fibromyalgia. This includes the back of your head, between your shoulders, front of your neck, top of your chest, elbows, tops of your hips and inside of your knees.

 

You may have pain in a few or many of these spots (most fibro sufferers have multiple tender points that can be identified by applying pressure to the area).

 

  1. Symmetrical Pain:The pain of fibromyalgia occurs in different areas of the body, on both sides and in the upper and lower areas (although this symmetrical pain won’t necessarily occur at the same time or constantly).

 

  1. Fatigue:Chronic daily fatigue is common and debilitating in those with fibromyalgia. This is partly due to difficulty sleeping, which may be caused by restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea, which often occur along with fibromyalgia.

 

  1. Sleep Disturbances:Insomniadifficulty falling asleep, and frequent night time waking are common symptoms of fibromyalgia.

 

  1. Brain Fog:“Fibro fog” may make it difficult for fibromyalgia patients to think clearly. The brain fog may be worsened by lack of sleep and physical pain.

 

  1. Lasting Pain:The pain of fibromyalgia tends to be chronic, lasting for three months or more, and is not able to be explained by another illness or injury.

Other Chronic Disease (Especially Rheumatic or Pain Conditions):Fibromyalgia is more likely to occur if you have another rheumatic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, and it may also occur alongside other pain conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, inflammatory bowel disease, interstitial cystitis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and vulvodynia.

How is Fibromyalgia Diagnosed and Treated?

 

Not all physicians will recognize the symptoms of fibromyalgia. However, if yours is familiar with it he or she should be able to make an accurate diagnosis. This is done based on criteria established by the American College of Rheumatology and includes:

 

“ … a history of widespread pain lasting more than 3 months, and other general physical symptoms including fatigue, waking unrefreshed, and cognitive (memory or thought) problems. In making the diagnosis, doctors consider the number of areas throughout the body in which the patient has had pain in the past week.”

 

Unfortunately, the first-line treatment for fibromyalgia is often pain relievers and/or anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are intended not as a cure but as a form of symptom relief. Antidepressants and anti-seizure medications, for pain relief, may also be recommended, although the benefits of such treatments are questionable.

 

In one analysis of 10 high-quality studies comprising more than 6,000 adults who received either duloxetine (Cymbalta, an antidepressant), milnacipran (Savella, for fibromyalgia pain), or a placebo to treat fibromyalgia for up to six months, the majority of those taking medications did not experience substantial improvement.

 

Only 22 percent of those on the drug regiment improved significantly while 21 percent quit taking the medications because the side effects were too severe.

 

The most common medication side effects that lead patients to stop taking the drugs were nausea, dry mouth, constipation, headache, somnolence/dizziness and insomnia, and, rarely, both drugs were associated with suicidality, liver damage, abnormal bleeding, elevated blood pressure and urinary hesitation.

 

The researchers concluded that drug treatment alone for fibromyalgia “should be discouraged,” and instead suggested a more holistic approach that included exercise to improve mobility and psychological counseling to improve coping skills. Study co-author Brian Walitt, M.D., M.P.H. added:

 

“The medical field does poorly with the treatment of fibromyalgia in general … Chasing [a cure] with medicine doesn’t seem to work. The people who seem to me to do best sort of figure it out on their own by thinking about things, getting to know themselves, and making changes in their lives to accommodate who they’ve become.”

 

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases:

 

“Many people with fibromyalgia also report varying degrees of success with complementary and alternative therapies, including massage, movement therapies (such as Pilates and the Feldenkrais method), chiropractic treatments, acupuncture, and various herbs and dietary supplements for different fibromyalgia symptoms.”

When you visit your doctor you expect to be getting the best advice and treatments that modern medicine has to offer. But the term ‘modern medicine’ is all relative — and doesn’t necessarily equate to the ‘best’ care.

 

For instance, morphine, opium, arsenic and mercury are all examples of what were once ‘modern-day’ cures. Decades later, hindsight is 20/20, as they say, since we now know the toxicity of such compounds.

 

It would be naive to believe, however, that there aren’t some well-accepted medical dogmas being regarded as the best standard of care right now, in 2013, that will one day be seen as equally as insane as soothing teething babies with morphine syrup …

 

Toward that end, we’ve compiled some of the craziest outdated medical procedures, including some that are still in use today, especially in relation to back pain, pain management and weight loss.

 

Craziest Outdated Medical Procedures from Then and Now

 

  1. Weight Loss Surgery

 

Weight loss surgery such as gastric banding and gastric bypass is on the rise, but did you know that nearly 40 percent (that’s close to half) of weight-loss surgery patients face serious side effects like malnutrition, infection, liver failure or sometimes death?

 

Gastric banding is so hit or miss that one in three patients experience band erosion and close to half must have the bands removed (the surgery has a re-operation rate of 60 percent!).

 

In order to qualify for weight loss surgery, patients typically have to commit to dietary and lifestyle modifications, and many must lose weight prior to the surgery. If you can lose weight, and make diet and exercise changes, for the surgery, you can do it to lose weight without it … and far more safely, at that.

 

While weight loss surgery does often work, it carries the extreme risk of death and sometimes permanent injury, so choosing to undergo it is a gamble, not unlike using some of the premier weight-loss solutions of the 19th century (like FatOff Obesity Cream, which claimed to ‘reduce superfluous flesh’ with unknown consequences).

 

  1. Bloodletting

 

In ancient times, everything from migraine headaches to seizures was treated with bloodletting, in which varying amounts of blood would be drained from your body to rid it of toxins.

 

It is now believed that many may have died from overzealous bloodletting (including George Washington, who reportedly was drained up 5 to 7 pints in the days leading up to his death).

 

Interestingly, there may be some merit to bloodletting after all, as research published in 2012 found that obese people with metabolic syndrome had improved blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular disease after just two sessions of blood donation (likely because it reduced their levels of iron).

 

  1. Bed Rest for Back Pain

 

It used to be standard to recommend prolonged bed rest to heal back pain, and many physicians still do recommend it. However, now research shows that continuing on with your daily activities leads to better flexibility while bed rest along may make back pain worse (while also leading to depression, blood clots and decreased muscle tone).

 

It’s now advised that people with back pain resume normal activities as much as possible, and even engage in exercise to speed recovery.

 

  1. Aspirin or Ibuprofen for Joint Pain

 

One of the most common uses for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is for treating osteoarthritis, a leading cause of joint pain (NSAIDs include aspirin, Celebrex, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve and others).

 

But clinical studies show that NSAIDs disrupt cartilage synthesis and actually speed up the destruction of cartilage and joints. In other words, they may actually harm your joints and ultimately make joint pain worse!

 

You might as well rub on some Hamlin’s Wizard Oil — a popular 1800s-era liniment (that could also be taken internally) that claimed to cure rheumatism and pain (and contained such ingredients as ammonia, chloroform, turpentine and alcohol (up to 70%).

 

  1. Cocaine for Pain Relief

 

In the 1800s, you could purchase cocaine drops to take the bite out of a toothache or suck on a cocaine throat lozenge if your throat became scratchy from too much singing or teaching (they were advertised for singers, teachers and orators). Due to its pain-relieving properties, cocaine was also used as anesthetic during surgery.

 

Think the idea of using cocaine for pain relief is crazy? Today more than 40 people die every day from overdoses involving FDA-approved pain relievers like Vicodin, Oxycontin and methadone.

 

In fact, overdoses involving prescription painkillers that your doctor will readily prescribe now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined!

 

  1. Spinal Fusion Surgery

 

This surgery, which eliminates motion between vertebrae in your spine, is recommended using the quite archaic premise that if your painful vertebrae can be stopped from moving, your pain will be relieved.

 

But as you might suspect, fusing together vertebrae in your spine does not come without consequence, like less flexibility in your spine and foundational changes in the way your spine can move.

 

Because spinal fusion surgery places additional stress on surrounding vertebrae, it can actually increase spinal degeneration and is associated with increases in disability, painkiller use and an inability to work.

Interstitial cystitis, or painful bladder syndrome, makes you feel like you need to urinate frequently, even when there’s only a small amount of urine in your bladder. It causes symptoms including bladder pressure, bladder pain and pelvic pain that can be severe.

 

Some people describe it as having a chronic urinary tract infection, although if you’re tested your urine culture will come back negative (and bacteria-free). However, there are some distinguishing symptoms:

 

  • Pain in your pelvis
  • Pain between your vagina and anus, or between your scrotum and anus (perineum)
  • Persistent urgent need to urinate
  • Frequent urination, often of small amounts (you may need to urinate as often as 60 times a day)
  • Pain or discomfort while your bladder fills and relief after urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

 

The exact cause of interstitial cystitis is unknown, but it may be due to a defect in the epithelium (the bladder’s lining), which could allow toxic substances in your urine to irritate your bladder wall. Other potential causes include an autoimmune reaction, infection or allergy, according to the Mayo Clinic.

 

Yet, technically interstitial cystitis is a chronic inflammation of your bladder wall. This is one reason why nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often prescribed to people with this condition (along with antidepressants, antihistamines and Elmiron, which is a drug approved specifically for interstitial cystitis.

 

Other common treatments include nerve stimulation, bladder distention (to try and stretch the bladder) or, rarely, surgery. Sometimes drugs are even instilled directly into your bladder via a catheter.

 

The problem is that these treatments are not always effective, and they might require you to be on medications long-term. More natural treatment options include bladder training, in which you urinate at set intervals, or dietary changes to eliminate bladder irritants.

 

Dietary changes may be the best way for treating interstitial cystitis, because your diet plays a large role in either driving or reducing the inflammation that underlies interstitial cystitis.

 

Is Interstitial Cystitis a Sub-Clinical Bladder Infection?

 

William Wong ND, PhD, member of the World Sports Medicine Hall of Fame, believes that interstitial cystitis begins with a bladder infection that never entirely goes away. He explains:

 

“The infection may become “sub clinical” in other words you think it’s gone but it has really just been weakened but is still hanging around. The infection can travel to the kidneys, it can burrow deep into the lining of the bladder eating away at the deep tissues. The low level infection causes inflammation which itself creates fibrosis [scar tissue]. Inflammation is the reason for 95% of all pain.”

The Easiest Way to Ease Painful Back Muscles While Sitting

Painful back muscles can occur when the muscles are being pulled or stretched too far, causing small tears within the muscles.

 

You will probably at some point have painful back muscles or a pulled back muscle which can happen during a game of golf, while cleaning a garage, or even on the dance floor.

 

A pulled back muscle may not sound like a serious injury, but the low back pain can be surprisingly severe. Fortunately, pulled back muscles usually heal within days or weeks.

 

While that pulled back muscle may seem to come on suddenly, chances are it was a long time coming. You could be ignoring some very important warning signs. This means if you’re not in pain now, you might want to sit up and pay attention.

 

Do you sit in a chair all day? Do you exercise incorrectly? Are you under tremendous stress? Are you dehydrated? Are you substantially overweight?

 

Did you honestly answer yes to one or more of those questions? If so, then you’re at greater risk of muscle imbalances, trigger point pain, and at higher risk for injuries like a pulled back muscle.

 

But when you do experience pulled back muscles what do you do? You probably reach for a bottle of pain killers and go lie down. But what should you really do?

 

Here are the 5 really awesome helpful steps to take now to help your body recover quickly from painful back muscles:

 

#1: Apply Cold

 

You should apply ice to your injury as soon as possible. The sooner you apply the ice the more it will help. Use a cold pack, a zip lock bag of crushed ice, or even a bag of frozen vegetables in a pinch.

 

Apply the cold pack in a circular massaging motion to prevent the ice from resting in one place too long. You can also place a thin towel between the compress and your skin to help prevent frostbite.

 

Ice can be applied up to 20 minutes at a time. Repeat over the course of the first few days, or after flare ups. The cold will cause nearby blood vessels to constrict and also help minimize swelling and painful inflammation.

 

The cold will stimulates your body to rush more oxygen-rich blood full of antibodies and vital nutrients to repair the injury and carry away waste products as it attempts to warm the area.

 

#2: Apply Heat

 

Try applying heat directly after the ice. This is a powerful way to “double-shock” your back muscles out of the pain-spasm cycle.

 

Apply 20 minutes of ice followed by 20 minutes of heat and repeat up to three times. This should provide some relief from even severe lower back pain.

 

There are many ways to apply heat, including a long hot shower, ultrasound, heating pad, and pain cream.

 

If you want the gold standard in heat for pain relief, try a far infrared heating pad, which produces heat that penetrates much deeper than the superficial heating a standard heating pad offers.

 

As heat is applied, your back muscles relax and circulation increases again as your body sends fresh blood supply to cool the area back to normal. Repeat heat treatments as necessary.

 

#3: Natural Anti-inflammatories

 

Think twice before you reach for that bottle of pain killer. It might kill more than just your pain.

 

The truth is inflammation is a normal part of the healing process. The problem with inflammation is our bodies lose the ability to turn off the inflammatory response as we get older.

 

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen can help with both pain and inflammation, but they also carry significant cardiac and digestive health risks.

Don’t rest too long. A little couch time won’t hurt, but light activity speeds recovery, so avoid lying down for long periods of time.

 

Growing evidence shows there is little or no benefit to bed rest over staying active. Listen to your body. Ultimately, your level of pain will determine your level of activity.

 

As a rule of thumb, if a certain activity led to painful back muscles don’t repeat it for at least a week. For example, if your back pain started after lifting something heavy, avoid lifting heavy objects for at least a week while your back muscle heals.

 

#5: Stretching and Strengthening

 

You’ll want to be very careful your first couple of days, but some light stretching can often reduce lower back pain from a pulled muscle by relieving tension. Include both strengthening and stretching exercises.

 

Try this easy stretch while lying in bed. Gently raise your knees from the bed to your chest, then put a slight pressure on your knees for a light stretch in your lower back.

 

This stretch can help relieve pain spasms in your back faster than waiting on them to resolve on their own. The stretch should not add to your pain, so again, remember to listen to your body.

How to Prevent Painful Back Muscles

 

Often you can avoid back pain by taking some simple protective steps.

 

Watch what you eat. Stay away from inflammatory foods, such as baked goods, processed foods, fruit juice, soda, sweetened cereals, and fast food. They make your body more sensitive to pain.

 

Keep fresh fruits and vegetables a main part of your diet. Also eat foods rich in back pain-relieving Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, sardines, and walnuts.

 

You need protein in your diet to help repair damaged tissue and to build and strengthen muscle. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water to hydrate tissues and organs and allow your body to regulate its temperature throughout the day.

 

Relieve stress. Many people hold emotional stress in their muscles. Frequent stress, anxiety, and tension can lead to tight muscles and muscle strains. You may be able to prevent new or recurring back pain with simple techniques such as massage and meditation.

 

Studies show that massage is an effective way to reduce stress and relax tightened muscles. And if you haven’t tried meditation, maybe you should. As little as 10 minutes being still, breathing deep, and centering your thoughts can quiet both mind and body after a stressful day.
