Have you heard? Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, announced last summer that she was eating a raw-food diet at least one day a week. Her motivation? To achieve radiant skin!

Even if you’re not a fan (or follower) of the Royal Family, this news is worth noting. Not about Kate Middleton – the fact that raw foods are phenomenal for your skin!

Because they’re not cooked, they retain all of their vitamin and antioxidant powers. Plus, raw foods are among the best for helping your body to detoxify, which allows your clearest complexion to shine through.

The best part is you don’t have to go all raw to achieve benefits. You could try it Kate Middleton style, i.e at least one day a week, or simply try to incorporate some of the following raw foods into your meals every day.

Healthy Raw Foods List #1 – Dark Leafy Green

Spinach, kale, Swiss chard and collards are filled with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber. One such antioxidant is lutein, which is beneficial for your skin and may even help prevent wrinkles.

If you don’t care for the flavor of kale, try adding it to your vegetable juice. Juicing dark leafy greens will help you fight inflammation and promote detoxification (of your skin and entire body).

Healthy Raw Foods List #2 – Walnuts

Walnuts contain B vitamins, including vitamin B1, which is helpful for circulation. Vitamin E, an antioxidant, may help protect your skin cells from damage and premature aging. Vitamin E protects against UV-induced damage and helps protect cell membranes.

Plus, walnuts contain omega-3 fats, which may help your skin to hold in moisture by strengthening skin cell membranes. Here’s a hint … when eating walnuts, be sure to eat the skin too (the whitish, flaky or waxy outer layer of the shelled nut) – about 90 percent of the antioxidant phenols are contained there.

Healthy Raw Foods List #3 – Cabbage

Cabbage is rich in sulfur, which is sometimes referred to as the “beauty mineral” because it’s found in high quantities in your skin, hair and nails. Sulfur is necessary to produce keratin, which are fibrous structural proteins essential for healthy skin. Creating a healthy coleslaw is an excellent way to eat more raw cabbage, but you can also add it to your vegetable juice.

Healthy Raw Foods List #4 – Beets

Beets are rich in a unique combination of anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants. They’re known for helping your body to detoxify while also promoting skin rejuvenation.

Healthy Raw Foods List #5 – Bell Peppers

One cup of bell pepper contains 157 percent of the recommended daily value for vitamin C, which is a superstar for skin health (and as a bonus, they also contain carotenoids). Vitamin C is found in high levels in both the dermis and epidermis layers of your skin.

Its antioxidant activity protects your skin against UV-induced damage caused by free radicals, and it also plays a role in increasing collagen protein synthesis to help repair damaged skin.

Vitamin C also stimulates DNA repair and research has shown that higher intakes of dietary vitamin C are associated with better skin appearance and notable decreases in skin wrinkling.

Healthy Raw Foods List #6 – Kiwi

Kiwi is also rich in vitamin C for healthy collagen production and, if you eat the skin, rich in fiber for healthy digestion (good digestion is essential for glowing skin). Is it really true that you can eat the skin? Absolutely, according to California Kiwifruit:

“The kiwifruit skin is completely edible and makes this nutrient-dense fruit even more nutritious! A recent study shows that eating the skin triples the fiber intake compared to merely eating the flesh. And by not peeling the skin, you preserve much of the vitamin C content as well.”

And here’s another hint … if you choose kiwi grown in California, it should be relatively free of chemicals, even if it’s not labeled organic: “Most of California’s kiwifruit is, for all intents and purposes, organically grown, with no chemicals sprayed directly on the fruit under normal growing conditions.”

Healthy Raw Foods List #7 – Apples

Apples are another phenomenal source of antioxidants (including vitamin C) and fiber. Apples also contain copper, a mineral that helps your body make melanin, which is a pigment that helps protect your skin from sun damage.

To get the most benefits, you’ll need to eat the skin (where much of the antioxidants and fiber are contained). It’s a good idea to choose organic apples, as they’re one of the most heavily pesticide-contaminated fruits.

Healthy Raw Foods List #8 – Almonds

Almonds are a good source of biotin, a B vitamin needed for healthy skin. Biotin helps your body produce new skin cells, and dry scaly skin is actually a symptom of biotin deficiency.

Almonds also contain a healthy amount of antioxidant vitamin E and manganese, which is essential for collagen formation. To get the full benefits, especially the biotin, it’s best to eat the almonds raw.

As noted by the University of Maryland Medical Center: “Food-processing techniques can destroy biotin. Less-processed versions of the foods … contain more biotin.”

Healthy Raw Foods List #9 – Broccoli

Broccoli contains sulforaphane, which is known for helping to repair skin damage. It’s also about 89 percent water, and staying hydrated is always good for a glowing complexion.

Healthy Raw Foods List #10 – Blackberries and Raspberries

These berries are good sources of zinc, which helps with skin repairs and renewal. They’re loaded with skin-boosting vitamin C and other antioxidants, plus blackberries have a high tannin content that helps tighten tissue, which, as the Huffington Post put it, “is a great non-surgical procedure to make skin look younger.”

Link between Arm Length and Vision Impairment

Many people have a hard time seeing small prints close up as they get older, a condition formally described as presbyopia (or loss of near vision). Typically, women seem to lose near vision sooner than men, and often require reading glasses or biofocal lenses before their male counterparts.

Why this might be has remained a mystery, but now new research published in Ophthalmology & Visual Science sheds some interesting light on the issue …

Women’s Shorter Arm Lengths May Cause Their Eyes to Go “Bad” Sooner

A meta-analysis of nine studies revealed no significant differences between men and women in terms of the eye’s ability to focus on objects close up. This suggested that another factor was to blame for why women tended to need reading glasses sooner.

The culprit? Researcher suggested that women, who generally have shorter arms than men, tend to hold their reading materials closer than men, a habit that, over time, may play a role in the eyes’ loss of focusing ability.

It could be that making an effort to hold your reading material farther away might have an impact on your vision in your golden years, although this has yet to be studied. There are, however, plenty of proven ways to restore and maintain your vision health that are backed by scientific research.

6 Eye Care Tips for Protecting Your Vision as You Age

  1. Avoid Smoking

Smoking can lead to vision loss by increasing your risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and Dry Eye Syndrome. Heavy smokers have a three times greater risk of developing cataracts, and up to four times the risk of macular degeneration, as non-smokers.

  1. Give Your Eyes a Break

Your eyes are under constant stress, especially if you engage in activities that require intense eye focusing for long periods of time, such as computer work, crossword puzzles and other hobbies. Giving your eyes a break by focusing on something in the distance once every 20 minutes or so will help prevent chronic eyestrain.

Another way to give your eyes a “break” is to wear UVA and UVB-blocking sunglasses, which will protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Over time, sun exposure to your eyes may increase your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and eye cancer.

  1. Watch Your Weight

One reason why exercising and eating plenty of fruits and veggies are important (see below) is to help you maintain a healthy weight, which will in turn help protect your vision. In fact, obesity is a known risk factor for cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and other vision problems.

  1. Exercise

Staying active is about so much more than just weight loss … it can also lead to significant improvements in your vision health, including helping to lower your risk of glaucoma, cataracts, retinal artery and retinal vein occlusions and macular degeneration.

  1. Increase Your Intake of Omega-3 Fats and Alpha Lipoic Acid

Omega-3 fats, healthful fatty acids, found in fish and fish oils, may help to stop abnormal blood vessel growth that causes retinopathies, which are among the leading causes of blindness.

Alpha lipoic acid also supports vision health by fighting off retinal disorders and eye diseases including glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

  1. Eat Plenty of Antioxidants

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to fight against free radical damage that can harm your eye’s retina and lens. Specifically, anthocyanins in berries may help improve blood flow to the eyes and protect the retina in people with diabetes.

Selenium, which is available in high levels in Brazil nuts, may help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration, a leading cause of age-related vision loss. Lutein and zeaxanthin (found in egg yolks and leafy greens) are two additional eye-health superstars known to reduce your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Supplements containing antioxidants have also been found to improve vision, with the following antioxidants and minerals helping to reduce the risk of macular degeneration while also reducing vision loss by 19 percent:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Beta-carotene
  • Zinc
  • Copper

If you are looking for safe, non-surgery and chemical free way to a healthy skin, you should take a look at natural ingredients such as spinach and sea kelp.

Various scientific studies show that spinach contains 13 different flavonoid compounds, which offer you’re a host of health benefits. These flavonoid compounds act as antioxidants which preserve the health of your cells and also help your skin look younger and healthier.

Raw spinach is also rich in amino acids, carotenes, Vitamins A, C, E, K and B complex, iron (which helps your skin to get enough oxygen), iodine (which has anti-inflammatory agents), zinc (which helps you to fight pimples), magnesium, potassium and more.

The combination of these nutrients in spinach increase the body’s natural rate of collagen production, which makes your skin look young and healthy.

Studies show that spinach is packed with anti-aging and anti-inflammatory nutrients that slow down the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

The vitamin A, C, beta-carotene and lutein present in spinach all serve as powerful antioxidants that help protect the skin from sun damage and wrinkle-causing elements.

Lutein and beta-carotene helps retain moisture and improves elasticity of the skin. Keeping your skin hydrated and supple are the key secrets in keeping wrinkles at bay.

The high amount of vitamin A in spinach also promotes healthy skin by allowing for proper moisture retention in the epidermis, thus fighting psoriasis, keratinization, acne and even wrinkles. Iodine in spinach helps treat skin diseases and strengthens the immune system.

Being rich in vitamin K and folate, spinach gives you a clear complexion by minimizing acne, bruising on the skin and dark circles. The bounty of vitamin and minerals in this vegetable give you quick relief from dry itchy skin, thus providing you with a radiant complexion.

As mentioned earlier, spinach is effective in clearing up acne. To get rid of acne, you can make a face mask by blending spinach with little water and applying it on your face for 20 minutes. This will remove dirt, oil and inflammation from your skin, thus refreshing and rejuvenating it from within.

You can also drink spinach juice with other vegetable juices mixed in the following proportions, ½ tomato, ¼ cucumber, 1 carrot, 1 celery, ½ red pepper, ½ cup cabbage, 1 green onion and a handful of spinach. Blend these ingredients to get the juice and drink it daily. This is effective for skin healing and prevents acne.

As stated earlier, spinach is a rich source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Vitamin A improves skin tone whereas vitamin C plays an important role in the repair as well as growth of skin cells. The amazing antioxidants and nutrients in spinach even out your complexion, making your skin look radiant.

Spinach is rich in vitamin B which protects your skin from the harmful ultra violet rays that cause sun damage, skin cancer and pre-mature ageing of skin.

Vitamin E which is also present in spinach is an important form of antioxidant for women. Vitamin E is linked to reproductive health in women. It also helps promote healthy skin, nails, and hair. Research has shown that it may prevent heart disease, cataracts and even cancer.

One of the vitamins that will promote healthy nails is Vitamin A. This vitamin for nail growth can be found in green and leafy vegetables such as spinach.

Lack of vitamin A can cause your nails to become dry and brittle that may hinder normal nail growth. Vitamin B-complex also is one of the vitamins for nail growth. This vitamin can also be acquired from spinach.

Hair loss is often a result of the deficiency of iron. This mineral strengthens the hair strands by enabling the blood cells to carry oxygen to the hair follicles which is essential for healthy hair growth and strong strands.

Deficiency of iron causes anaemia which results in hair loss among other adverse effects. Spinach is rich in folate and iron. While folate aids the creation of red blood cells, iron helps them carry oxygen, thus combating hair loss.

Now, let’s talk about sea kelp which is a type of seaweed or marine algae that is available in powder form. It may be brown, green or red, and is rich in various nutrients such as minerals and proteins.

Sea kelp can also be applied topically and is an ingredient in many natural skincare products. Sea kelp has a variety of benefits, but one of its most common uses is for creating healthy skin. It is an important part of a skincare regimen for those who are concerned about aging, as well as those of all ages who deal with skin blemishes.

Sea kelp is packed with vitamins and nutrients, many of which are considered beneficial to easing the effects of acne. The iodine in kelp also helps balance the thyroid, which means the surging hormones that often lead to adolescent acne are kept under control.

Some people are bothered by the moles on their skin. These tiny brown marks are natural, but if they occur in certain places, they can leave a person feeling self-conscious.

Sea kelp benefits skin by lightening the moles and in some cases, causing the moles to disappear. Applying kelp topically over the course of weeks often has a vanishing effect on moles.

Sea kelp might also be helpful in removing skin tags, which are tiny flaps of skin that occur on various parts of the body. Both moles and skin flaps increase in occurrence as a person ages.

To harness the anti-aging nutrients in spinach and sea kelp, you can combine both of them together to create a facial mask. You will need some fresh spinach leaves and 1 tablespoon of sea kelp powder.

You separate the spinach leaves from the stems and boil the leaves. After this, you put the boiled spinach leaves into a blender to be grinded into paste. Then you add the sea kelp powder to the spinach paste.

Spread the mixture in a thin and even layer over your entire face and neck. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse the mixture from your face using room temperature water. Pat the skin dry with a towel. Do this regularly to get firm and wrinkle free skin. You can refrigerate the mixture for up to 3 days.
