Pumpkin isn’t just for pie during Thanksgiving or for decorating your front porch during Halloween. What you probably don’t know is pumpkin contains essential vitamins and nutrients that are necessary for you if you want to get healthy and radiant skin.

Pumpkin is suitable for use on all skin types. This is especially so if your skin is damaged by the sun’s ultra violet rays. Beta-carotene (a carotenoid better known as vitamin A), found in the bright orange pulp of pumpkins is known to protect skin cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and is also good for the scalp.

Free radicals are the culprits responsible for causing poor skin tone and elasticity and wrinkles over time because they break down skin-plumping collagen and elastin, which can weaken over time.

The long-term results of this breakdown are wrinkles. Pumpkin is also a good source of vitamin C; another powerful antioxidant that combats free radicals.

Pumpkin is a good source of the minerals copper and zinc. Copper plays a role in collagen, elastin and melanin production. Melanin is a pigment that determines the colour of your skin and hair, which explains why pigmentation problems may be attributed to dietary copper deficiency.

Pumpkin may help fade away the brown spots left behind by acne. Zinc is thought to regulate excessive oil production in your hair follicles, which explains why increasing your intake of zinc may clear up acne. Zinc also assists in the repair of inflamed tissues, such as pimples, rashes and sunburns.

Like banana and avocado, pumpkin is another rich source of potassium and this nutrient is especially useful in promoting the re-growth of hair.   This makes pumpkin one of the vegetables for hair loss.

Pumpkin is especially good for moisturizing dry or damaged hair.

Due to the many benefits to the skin from pumpkin, you can easily find a wide range of skin care and foot care products which have pumpkin as one of their ingredients. If you prefer natural skin care products, you can learn how to make your own homemade skin care treatments using fresh or canned pumpkin.

Following are some pumpkin scrub recipes you can use at home for a healthier and younger looking skin.

Honey Milk Pumpkin Scrub for Dry Skin

For this recipe, you will need 2 teaspoons of pureed pumpkin, half teaspoon each of raw organic honey (or manuka honey) and milk. If you want, instead of using milk, you can either use half teaspoon of brown sugar which exfoliates and moisturizes the skin or you can add in 1 teaspoon of plain yogurt.

You mix all the ingredients together, and then you apply the mixture all over your face avoiding the eye area. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.

Apple Cider Vinegar Pumpkin Scrub for Oily Skin

For this recipe, you will need 1 tablespoon of pureed pumpkin and 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. You mix the ingredients together and then you apply the mixture to your damp face. Leave it on until dry or up to 30 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.

Sugar Pumpkin Scrub for Glowing Skin

For this recipe, you will need 5 to 6 tablespoons of pumpkin pulp, 3 tablespoons of sugar and half teaspoon of pumpkin seed oil. You mix all of them together to form a thick paste. Then you apply this on your face and gently scrub after 2 to 3 minutes.

You can also prepare a pumpkin body scrub by combining 1 cup of pumpkin pulp and one-third cup of sugar. After you bath, you dry your body and then you apply this all over your body. You start from the lower leg and rub it up and down gently and slowly. The abrasiveness of the sugar will start to remove the dead skin cells.

You can also prepare a pumpkin foot scrub if you want to. For this, you will need 1 tablespoon each of pureed pumpkin, brown sugar, coffee powder, lemon juice and lastly the carrier oil which can be almond oil, jojoba oil or extra virgin olive oil.

You mix all of these ingredients together in a bowl. After you have mixed them well, you can now apply the pumpkin scrub to your feet and scrubbing gently. Then you rinse off with lukewarm water after about 10 minutes.
