The first step to take for curing yeast infection is to stick to a well-defined candida diet. Recent research has proven that eating the right kind of food especially those that strengthens the immune system can be highly effective in preventing the occurrence of certain health problems and chronic diseases, including Candida infections. Before discussing the impact of candida diet on yeast infection, let’s take a quick look at what candida infection is and the specific causes of it.

What is candida infection?

Candida is the scientific name for single cell microbes that can be found in small amounts in the various parts of the human body such as the intestines, the genitals, the mouth etc. Under normal conditions these microbes are kept in check by beneficial bacteria and an operational immune system.

However certain conditions can wreck this healthy balance, killing off beneficial bacteria that keep yeast populations in check. Candida can grow out of control to damage the mucous membranes of the gut, invading the bloodstream and causing symptoms such as redness, itching and discomfort. As these microbes can easily travel to various parts of the body, systemic as well as local yeast infection can occur.

What are the causes of candida infection?

There are many factors that cause yeast infection. Some of these factors are food-related such as having a diet that is high in carbohydrates and refined sugar. For this reason, eating the right kind of food to prevent yeast infection is the first and one of the basic moves in and make to holistic Candida therapy.

By following closely to the types of food to eat and to avoid, in combination with other nutrition and lifestyle principles can bring positive results to your general health and fortifying your body against yeast infection:

1. Yeasts love sugars—in fact, they thrive on them. To starve the troublemakers, make a conscious effort to cut back. That means avoiding refined sugar, refined grains and starches. Refined sugar (which includes simple carbohydrates such as molasses and honey) and other refined grains and starches (such as white flour, white rice, white bread, white potato, any type of cereals etc.) raise the level of blood sugar (glucose) in the body which encourages the overgrowth of yeast.

To prevent candida overgrowth, it is advisable to use Stevia instead of sugar and to switch to high fiber foods (such as brown rice, whole-wheat bread and whole-grain pasta and cereal) to replace refined carbohydrates. Choose sweet potatoes over white potatoes whenever possible because they have less effect on blood sugar.

2. Foods that contain yeast or mold (like yeast bread, white vinegar, mushrooms, calm, dried fruits, canned vegetables and some condiments) may cause yeast fungi to flourish in the body. Avoid them if you are on antibiotics, under stress, sick, or pregnant—all conditions that make you more vulnerable to a yeast infection.

3. To fight Candida, your immune system needs to be strong. Using antibiotics can wipe out the good bacteria that protect the body from more harmful bacteria. Therefore, you should stop using antibiotics and to cut down the intake of dairy products that may also contain antibiotics.

Daily consumption of garlic and onion can strengthen the immune system (which is essential to prevent yeast infection) and lessen the likelihood of recurrent yeast infections. Garlic is most effective when eaten raw, so chop some and add it to salads, salsa, and pasta dishes, or simply chew the cloves if you can bear it.

4. Dairy products and cow’s milk products in particular, should be avoided to because they can lead to allergic reactions that create excessive mucus and take longer to digest. Some of the main yeast infection factors can include allergies and digestive problems.

Better alternatives to dairy products of Cow’s milk are organic goat sheep’s milk products and plain yogurt. When you choose yogurt, make sure you get those with live, active cultures, particularly L. acidophilus. Avoid sweetened yogurts because sugar can worsen a yeast infection.

5. To stop Candida overgrowth, it is important to maintain the right acid-alkaline balance. That means the right “PH” level in your blood. PH is measured on a scale that goes from zero to fourteen where fourteen is the most alkaline, seven is
neutral and zero is the most acid. Your body functions best in the range of PH 7.35 and 7.45 for acidity in the blood. Any extra acidity can encourage candida overgrowth.

An alkaline food plan, which is based on consumption of alkaline forming foods (foods with calcium, cesium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, almonds, green juices, and most fresh vegetables etc.) with moderate consumption of foods that form acids (most meats, fish, dairy and grain products) can help you regain your alkaline quotient to better control candida growth.

6. A study by Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York revealed that eating foods rich in beta carotene (a natural substance responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their orange pigment which is converted into vitamin A in the body) could offer some protection against yeast infections.

A powerful antioxidant, beta carotene has been found to help protect against cancer and aging. Beta-carotene is a fat soluble vitamin, so in order to help absorption of it you have to eat the high beta-carotene foods with a fat like olive oil or nuts. The foods that are rich in beta-carotene include sweet potato, kale, carrots, turnip greens, mustard greens, spinach, dried herbs, butternut squash, lettuce and collards.

Remember that Candida diet which is an essential part of a full holistic therapy can be very effective for stopping all kinds of yeast infections.
