The researchers analyzed 761 men who had undergone prostate surgery for prostate cancer in Norway. They reported on their recovery from the surgery and also completed a personality test.

 

Prostate surgery often results in ED and urinary incontinence, and the scientists wanted to ascertain if there was a personality type that put men at risk of slower recovery from these problems post-surgery.

 

On the personality test, 22 percent of participants scored higher on neuroticism, which is around the average for men in developed countries.

 

These highly neurotic men scored around 20 percent worse on the problematic side effects of the surgery than the non-neurotic men. They all reported ED, urinary incontinence, and bowel problems.

 

This makes a useful contribution to the literature, because past studies mostly concentrated on the surgical methods and location or severity of the prostate cancer as causes of the side effects and the inability to overcome them.

The researchers also warned that one should not think of neuroticism as a psychological disorder. It is a personality trait.

The researchers recruited 808 male patients who had been diagnosed with ischemic heart disease (clogged arteries) and who were receiving treatment for it at five medical centers.

 

They completed the International Index of Erectile Function 5 questionnaire to assess their level of ED, a modified Framingham questionnaire that was used to ascertain their level of physical activity, and all their Socioeconomic, demographic, occupational, and lifestyle data were also collected with their medical documentation.

 

76 percent of participants experienced ED, a staggeringly high rate.

 

Not so surprising findings:

 

The occurrence of ED was more common in older men, in those with a lower physical exercise tolerance, in those who were physically inactive, in those with higher blood pressure in the left ventricle, in those with a weaker pumping from the left ventricle, in those who had smoked more at some stage of their lives, in those with diabetes, and in those with the most negative modifiable lifestyle factors.

 

Interesting findings:

 

Body mass index, waist circumference, and previous heart attack were all surprisingly irrelevant.

 

Surprising findings:

 

Regarding educational status, they divided the subjects into four groups, ranging from basic to vocational, secondary, and higher.

 

The better educated the subjects were, the less likely they were to have ED and the less severe their ED was if they had it.

 

So apparently, men could potentially avoid ED by getting a college degree.

 

But if you don’t have a college degree, getting one now is probably not going to heal your ED.

 

And the findings were, of course, not absolute, as can be seen by the many men with a college degree who still suffer from ED.

They observed all these cases for an average of 10 years to find out whether men with gout developed erectile dysfunction at higher levels than their healthy peers, and exactly when the ED was diagnosed.

 

It turned out that men with gout were 31 percent more likely to develop ED than the general men without gout, and that the ED in many of the cases was diagnosed in the year before the gout.

 

In the year before the gout diagnosis, men were 63 percent more likely than the goutless men to develop ED, 77 percent more likely in the first two years, and then dropped off to 16 percent after five years of gout diagnosis.

 

To the scientists, this suggested that elevated uric acid was responsible for the ED.

In 2016, a team of researchers published a study in the journal Atherosclerosis in which they analyzed the data of 3,390 American men who did not have any form of heart disease.

 

Men with vitamin D below 20 nanograms per milliliter of blood (ng/mL) were classified as vitamin D deficient, while men with levels at or above 30 ng/mL were defined as optimal.

 

Compared to the optimal group, men in the deficient group were 30% more likely to have Erectile Dysfunction and 80% more likely to have severe Erectile Dysfunction.

The treated group also showed an improvement in urinary function and continence, with no cases of severe or moderate symptoms remaining after the 10 years.

The scientists used 40 male Sprague Dawley rats, 10 of whom were lucky enough to be used as a control group that was not exposed to any gasoline vehicle exhaust gasses at all.

 

The other 30 were exposed to this pollution at lengths of either two hours, four hours, or six hours of per day for three months.

 

After three months, an examination revealed that those exposed to four and six hours of daily exhaust gasses definitely suffered from sexual dysfunction.

 

The arteries that were meant to allow blood into their penises during an erection had become less flexible and were less able to relax, thereby inhibiting the blood flow.

 

In addition, the pressure that was meant to trap the blood inside the corpora cavernosa inside their penises had weakened, resulting in the blood flowing out before sexual activity could be completed.

 

Furthermore, the rats that were tested also suffered from high levels of inflammation throughout their bodies, lung damage and reduced lung capacity, and low nitric oxide in their penises.

 

All of these have previously been found to cause erectile dysfunction, and this demonstrates that it is not only that gasoline vehicle exhaust gasses which cause ED, but would also include the physiological mechanisms through which it happens.

 

So maybe the manly man of the future will not be one driving a big V8 monster truck, but a small electric car. At least they’ll have a better chance of a healthy erection.

A new study in the journal, Aktuelle Urologie, reveals the one thing that differentiates men who suffer ED from men who don’t?

 

Researchers examined the blood of 60 men suffering from ED and 60 who didn’t. They found the two groups had the same amount of testosterone, glucose, creatinine, LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol and triglycerides (fats) in their blood.

 

The one big difference between the group was the number of monocytes in their blood, with ED sufferers having a lot more of them than sexually functional men.

 

So, what are monocytes?

 

They are white blood cells, a type of immune system cell and are dispatched to tissue where your immune system detects a foreign invader.

 

Once they arrive, they turn into macrophages that then break down the potentially harmful invaders.

 

If you have a lot of them in your bloodstream, it means that your immune system in high alert in response to some detected threat.

 

Most often this high alert is in response to a high level of oxidized LDL cholesterol. This is the type of LDL cholesterol that gets stuck on your artery walls and blocks blood flow.
