Health Warnings – What is Actually in a Hot Dog?

Health Warnings - What is Actually in a Hot Dog? There is no doubt that Americans love a good hot dog. But what you can find in a hot dog can make you throw up. Read this 1st before you are going to eat a hot dog.

The average American eats … wait for it … 70 hot dogs a year. This is according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), which also noted that 95 percent of U.S. households serve hot dogs.

There’s no doubt that Americans love a good hot dog. Heck, they’re as American as apple pie and white picket fences. Every region even has its own special version.

In New York (where more hot dogs are consumed than anywhere else in the U.S.), hot dogs are served with steamed onions and dry yellow mustard.

Chicago dogs are more complicated, served with “yellow mustard, dark green relish, chopped raw onion, pickle spear, sport peppers, tomato slices and topped with a dash of celery salt and served in a poppy seed bun,” according to NHDSC.

In the South, meanwhile, you’ll find hot dogs topped with coleslaw while other regions prefer dogs topped with chili or sauerkraut.

But, be honest. Although you might think carefully about what to put on top of your dog, you probably don’t give much thought to what’s in it because, well, you’re afraid of what you might find out. (If you really don’t want to know, now’s the time to cover your eyes).

“Meat Batter” on a Bun

Hot dogs fall into the category of “emulsion-type sausages,” which are generally made from finely chopped meat, fatty tissue and water or ice.

However, according to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in the case of hot dogs “the term meat “batter” instead of meat “emulsion” might be better.”

Hot dogs are made from meat trimmings (typically beef or pork but also poultry). These are the parts left over after the more desirable cuts, like steaks and roasts, are removed.

In high-quality dogs, the bulk of the hot dog will be made from meat – look for terms like all-beef, grass-fed and organic on the label.

But what about those cheaper lower-quality dogs? A small amount of pork, mechanically separated poultry, corn syrup solids, preservatives, soy and milk solids – all are fair game.

As the Daily Mail put it, here’s what you might see if you visited a hot-dog factory:

“In vast metal vats, tons of pork trimmings are mixed with the pink slurry formed when chicken carcasses are squeezed through metal grates and blasted with water.

The mush is mixed with powdered preservatives, flavorings, red coloring and drenched in water before being squeezed into plastic tubes to be cooked and packaged. It is a disgusting process, for the hot dog is arguably the ultimate in processed, industrial food.”

Many hot dogs contain less than 50 percent ‘regular’ meat and the rest:

  • Mechanically separated meat
  • Water (no more than 10 percent)
  • Fillers like corn starch, maltodextrin, cereal grains and corn syrup (up to 3.5 percent)
  • Salt
  • Preservatives
  • Flavorings (which don’t have to be disclosed)
  • Casings (natural casings are animal intestines)

You might be able to get past meat trimmings, mechanically separated meat and preservatives, but can you get past this …

2 Percent of Hot Dogs May Contain Human DNA … and Your Veggie Dog May Contain Meat

Clear Food genetically tested 345 hot dog samples from 75 brands. Their tests revealed problems such as label inaccuracies or hygiene issues, in more than 14 percent of the dogs.

Perhaps worst of all, 2 percent of the hot dogs contained traces of human DNA. Vegetarian hot dogs accounted for two-thirds of the “human DNA dogs,” and 10 percent of the veggie dogs also contained meat.

Other products contained types of meat that were not listed on the label, such as pork in a supposedly pork-free hot dog, or did not contain all the ingredients listed on the label.

If you’re still looking to chow down on hot dogs, there’s more bad news. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently classified processed meat as a carcinogen.

Hot dogs are the poster-child for processed meats. IARC reviewed more than 800 studies to make the cancer determination and revealed that eating 50 grams of processed meat daily (that’s the equivalent of one hot dog) increased the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent.

If you only eat hot dogs occasionally, you probably don’t need to worry. But if hot dogs are one of your go-to staples, cutting back may be a good idea. And while you’re at it, do your digestive tract a favor and take 30 days to detox and flush out some of those toxins you’ve accumulated.

Revealing Here are 5 Most Unhealthy Cancer-Causing Foods - A recent Nature study revealed that up to 90 percent of cancer cases are caused by extrinsic factors, including your diet which may contain unhealthy cancer-causing foods. Here are 5 foods you should avoid if you want to reduce your cancer risk

A recent Nature study revealed that up to 90 percent of cancer cases are caused by extrinsic factors, including your diet which may contain unhealthy cancer-causing foods.

As you may well be aware, focusing your diet on healthy foods like fresh vegetables, fruits and healthy sources of protein (grass-fed meat, wild-caught fish, beans, nuts, seeds, avocado, etc.) may help lower your risk of chronic diseases like cancer.

On the other hand, a diet based on processed foods may increase your cancer risk. But this is a rather vague definition, isn’t it?

If you want to know what are the unhealthy cancer-causing foods that really increase your cancer risk, read below.

The unhealthy cancer-causing foods that follow are the worst of the worst when it comes to cancer.

  1. Processed Meats

The World Health Organization’s) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently classified processed meats as a Group 1 carcinogen, the same category as tobacco smoke and asbestos.

This means “there is convincing evidence that the agent causes cancer,” and IARC’s determination was based on evidence showing that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer.

Processed meats, according to WHO, refer to “meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation.” This includes hot dogs, ham, sausages, beef jerky, corned beef, canned meat and more.

  1. Potato Chips and French Fries

These two “food groups” have been found to contain higher levels of acrylamide than other foods. Acrylamide is formed when the amino acid asparagine, which is found in high concentrations in some potatoes, is heated to high temperatures (above 248 degrees F) in the presence of certain sugars.

IARC considers acrylamide a “probable human carcinogen” and animal studies have linked it to several types of cancer.

  1. Soda

Dark-colored sodas often contain 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI), which is formed during the manufacture of caramel color. 4-MEI is a potential carcinogen and a Consumer Reports study found most soda contain 3.4 micrograms to 352.5 micrograms of 4-MEI per 12-ounce can.

According to research published in PLOS One, routine consumption of certain [soda] beverages can result in 4-MEI exposures > 29 μg/day, the level at which the state of California requires products to carry cancer warning labels. Soda is also high in sugar (see below).

  1. Excess Sugar

Sugars in your intestines cause cells to release GIP, a hormone that enhances insulin release. Your cells’ ability to release GIP is controlled by β-catenin, a protein whose activity is dependent on sugar levels.

Increased β-catenin activity, in turn, is associated with cancer development and may make cancer cells immortal, leading to cancer progression.

As reported by Science Daily:

“The study demonstrates that high (but not normal) sugar levels induce nuclear accumulation of β-catenin and leads to cell proliferation. The changes induced on β-catenin, the molecules involved and the diversity of cancer cells susceptible to these changes are identified.

[Study author] Dr. [Custodia] Custodia García said “We were surprised to realize that changes in our metabolism caused by dietary sugar impact on our cancer risk … Changing diet is one of easiest prevention strategies that can potentially save a lot of suffering and money.”

  1. Meats Cooked at High Temperatures

When meat is cooked at high temperatures, such as fried or barbecued,  it may contain high levels of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

When HCAs and PAHs become activated by certain enzymes in your body (which differ among individuals) they become capable of damaging DNA and potentially causing cancer. Consumption of such meats is associated with increased risks of colorectal, pancreatic, and prostate cancer.

I’ve covered some of the foods you should avoid eating, so what are the foods you should eat? Here are seven of the best foods you can eat (especially if you’re over 50).

If you’ve been feasting on any of the foods on this list, it may be time for a detox with Natural Cleanse. This 30-day colon flush and revitalization program contains a proprietary probiotic blend to nourish your gut bacteria along with buckthorn bark and rhubarb root, both of which contain beneficial anthraquinones.

Plus, they’re combined with several other gentle yet effective compounds for colon health, including licorice root, cloves, ginger, fiber-rich psyllium husk and more to help remove the junk that, after years of unhealthy eating, may have accumulated in your colon.

Do you know that a cancerous cell is acidic? If your body is in a constant state of over-acidification, it becomes impossible for healthy cells to regenerate.

Cancer cells thrive in an overly acidic environment. By taking action to become more alkaline, you can make it more difficult for cancer cells to regenerate.

Eating an acid/alkaline balanced diet is the key to staying healthy. Understanding the pH of the foods that you eat is relative to the state of your body’s health.

The goal of the acid alkaline balance diet, also known as the alkaline diet and the alkaline ash diet, is to achieve an optimal balance between acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods.

The anti-cancer alkaline diet greatly reduces the strain on the body’s acid-detoxification systems.

Detailed information about this diet can be found in the anti-cancer alkaline diet book: The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet

What You Need to Really Sleep Better?

What You Need to Really Sleep Better? Do you know what is important for you to sleep better? Read on here to find out more.
Click HERE to Find Out How You Can Sleep Better Without Sleeping Pills

America has very much become a “throwaway” society, but there’s one area where we may be holding on to an item for too long … our pillows.

Most people use the same pillow for more than three years, according to a study by Ergoflex UK. For some, it becomes like a security blanket, something you can’t possibly imagine sleeping without.

Choosing a new pillow, then, can create anxiety and stress … will you ever find a pillow that’s as comfortable as your pillow? And isn’t it ok to hold on to your pillow, yellow stains and all?

Here’s a quick trick that can help you answer that question. Fold your pillow in half. If this is possible, and it doesn’t spring back into its original shape, your pillow (or more like, your pancake) is overdue for replacement.

As far as length of time goes, it depends on which ‘expert’ you ask. Robert Oexman, DC, director of the Sleep to Live Institute, says replacing your pillow every six months is reasonable.

Interior design expert Robin Wilson believes you can get away with once every three years, if you wash your pillow regularly (including the pillow cover every three weeks and the pillow itself every three months).

The UK’s Sleep Council comes in right in the middle. They recommend replacing your pillow every two years. There are even those who say a pillow can last 20 years if it’s properly care for. So who’s right? The answer probably depends on you.

Are You Suffering From Symptoms of “Old Pillow-Itis”?

More than 90 percent of Americans agree that a comfortable pillow is crucial to getting a restful night’s sleep. But everyone’s idea of comfortable is unique. You may love your flat pancake pillow. Your partner may prefer a fluffy pillow or two, while others insist a firm pillow is best.

If you regularly wake up with back and/or neck pain, your old pillow could be to blame. This is particularly true if it’s no longer the correct size and shape for your preferred sleeping position.

For instance, for the sake of keeping a neutral position to your spine, stomach sleepers should use a flat pillow, side sleepers a firm supportive pillow and back sleepers a fluffy (not overly thick) pillow (or no pillow at all) is best.

Another sign that your pillow is past its prime can be aggravation to your allergies or asthma, especially if your symptoms are strongest first thing in the morning (after you’ve had your face buried in an old pillow all night) and year-round. That old pillow is a cesspool of dust mites, to which about two-thirds of people with allergies are allergic.

Even if they don’t bother you … dust mites are a member of the spider family and though you can’t see them, they’re in your pillow. This isn’t reason alone to get rid of your pillow, unless it’s not washable – otherwise, washing your pillow in hot water will kill dust mites.

And here’s something else to think about … researchers have found up to 1 million fungal spores in pillows they tested. Dust mites eat fungi, and the fungi may thrive off the dust mites’ faeces, creating what researchers described as a “miniature ecosystem” in your pillow. Yuck.

Finally, if you struggle with acne, your pillow could, again, be to blame. You rest your face on your pillow every night, which means dirt, oil and other debris are commonly found there. If you don’t wash your pillowcase often, this could trigger or worsen acne.

One More Important Factor for You to Sleep Better – The Material

What your pillow is made of will also impact its longevity. Polyester pillows tend to wear out the fastest, but they’re also affordable and machine washable.

Foam pillows will last longer, but there are serious concerns surrounding chemicals in the foam.

Natural materials, like wool, present an attractive alternative, as they naturally repel dust mites (and fungal spores) and last longer than many synthetic pillows. Even natural shredded latex is an option.

As regard to how often should you replace your pillow? – there is no definitive answer. Consider your pillow’s shape and comfort level. Consider your level of tolerance to “ick factors” like dust mites and fungus.

And consider your care pattern – has your pillow been regularly washed and cared for? These items will help you decide when it’s time to say goodbye … and once you’ve figured out your pillow, it’s time to consider what may be an even more important factor for you to sleep better – your mattress.

Do you ever walk into your house and breathe a big sigh of relief that you’re home? It’s second nature, as our homes are (ideally) our place of respite from the outside world.

Unfortunately, your house is also home to chemicals and other toxins – a lot of them. With each breath of your home’s air, one study found you could be inhaling up to 400 different chemicals, some of which researchers couldn’t even identify.

Among those that were identified were pesticides and “a wide array of hydrocarbons, fragrances such as the musk xylenes, flavors relating to spices, aldehydes, alcohols, esters and phthalate esters, and other miscellaneous types of chemicals.”

These chemicals are there courtesy of some of your most beloved home goods; they outgas into your air or into your household dust (which is then circulated into your air). Other items you don’t think twice about may also pose unique hazards to your family.

It is therefore a great idea to conduct at least one detox program for your house annually, and the first step to any detox program is removing the most toxic elements around you … I’d recommend starting with these that follow …

Dump These Toxic Home Items for a Healthier Body

Toxic Home Items #1 – Carpet

Carpet is a synthetic material, made from petroleum byproducts, nylon, acrylic, PVC and more. These substances outgas toxic chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde into your home’s air.

VOCs have been linked to cancer and damage to the liver, kidneys and central nervous system. Your carpet is also a ready home for mold, bacteria and viruses.

According to one expert, Phillip Tierno, director of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology, NYU, your carpet may contain 200,000 bacteria per square inch, which would make it 4,000 times dirtier than your toilet seat.

If you do decide to install “typical” carpeting, be sure to do the following to reduce your risks:

  • Lay the carpet out somewhere other than in your home for a few days or, preferably, a few weeks. This will help it let out the initial large doses of VOCs and other chemicals before it’s brought into your home.

  • Skip the stain resistant and anti-static treatments. These will only add more chemicals to your carpet, which means more pollution to your indoor air.

  • Ventilate during installation — and after: Installation and the first few days/weeks following are when the highest volume of chemicals will be released. Be sure your home is properly ventilated (open windows, etc.) during this time.

  • Avoid moisture: Although mold and fungi can grow even on seemingly dry carpets, it’s important to dry your carpet out thoroughly following any spills or moisture to help reduce mold and bacterial growth.

Toxic Home Items #2 – Dryer Sheets

The air vented from dryers using scented dryer sheets has been shown to contain hazardous chemicals, including acetaldehyde and benzene, which are classified as carcinogens by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Worse still, they coat your clothes with chemicals like acetone (found in nail polish remover) and quaternary ammonium compounds, which are linked to asthma.

Toxic Home Items #3 – Oven Cleaner

Most oven cleaners contain sodium or potassium hydroxide, which help dissolve the baked-on debris. However, they can also burn your skin, lungs and eyes.

Some also contain high concentrations of butoxydiglycol (DEGBE), a solvent banned in the European Union at concentrations above 3 percent in aerosol cleaners because it may irritate and inflame your lungs.

To clean the bottom of your oven, sprinkle it with baking soda (liberally) and then spray with water. Let it sit for eight hours then scrape off.

Toxic Home Items #4 – Kitchen Sponge

The sponge you use to wash dishes and clean your kitchen counter may contain 10 million bacteria per square inch and be 200,000 times dirtier than your toilet.

Dr. Roxanne Sukol, medical director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Enterprise, told the Wall Street Journal, “There is a forest of bacteria, spores, even pathogens, in a sponge—not just one single culture … It becomes contaminated the minute you touch it.”

Replace your kitchen sponge at least two to four times a month, and run it through the dishwasher (or microwave it, wet, for 60 seconds) regularly. Those latter tricks have been shown to get rid of nearly 100 percent of the lurking bacteria.

Toxic Home Items #5 – Pesticides

Pesticides aren’t only toxic to pests … they’ve been linked to obesity, leukemia, Parkinson’s disease and other health problems in humans as well. And once you use them in your home, they’re there to stay. One study by the EPA found that not only are most kitchen floors in the US contaminated with pesticides, but they can linger there for a decade.

Swap all forms of pesticides (including those used for flea/tick treatments on pets and lice treatments) for natural alternatives. Natural castile soap or vinegar mixed with water works to keep many pests away. Essential oils including lemongrass, cedar and eucalyptus also help to repel pests.

Toxic Home Items #6 – Plastics Marked With #7 and Canned Goods

These are potential sources of bisphenol-A (BPA), the endocrine-disrupting chemicals that’s been making headlines for years now due to its potential links to cancer, productive problems, obesity, heart disease and more.

When you are storing food, glass is a better option than virtually any form of plastic, as even BPA-free plastics have been shown to release estrogenic chemicals that may cause adverse health effects.

Toxic Home Items #7 – Your Couch Cushions and Mattress

These are common sources of flame-retardant chemicals, which may migrate into your home’s air, settle into household dust and ultimately be inhaled by you and your family.

These chemicals have been linked to reproductive disorders, cancer, brain damage and more, and they pose an especially serious threat to children and pregnant women.

When choosing furniture, look for naturally flame-resistant materials like wool, cotton or jute. Avoid those with the TB 117 label (which is the California flammability standard) and instead look for TB 117-2013 (which was recently updated to no longer require the use of such chemicals, although it is not a guarantee of their absence).

When buying a mattress, choose an organic mattress that uses a combination of natural latex, organic cotton and organic wool. Together they provide a uniquely comfortable sleeping experience.

Select a firmer organic mattress if:

  • You tend to sleep on your back
  • You tend to sleep on your stomach
  • You are heavier in weight
  • You have lower back pain or sciatica

Select a softer organic mattress if:

  • You tend to sleep on your side
  • You tend to toss and turn a lot when you sleep
  • You have trouble falling asleep
  • You are lighter in weight
  • You have spinal stenosis

Natural cures for nasal polyps

Natural cures for nasal polyps - There are a number of natural cures for nasal polyps which provide fast, effective treatment and many people report complete shrinkage in just a few days of treatment. Read on to find out how you can cure your nasal polyps permanently and naturally in just 4 days.

Why natural cures for nasal polyps are more effective?

You might be wondering why you always have trouble with your breathing, and why your nose passages are clogged up. Those symptoms could be the result of nasal polyps.

If that is the case, when you visit the doctor, there will be two remedies recommended; treat the condition with steroids in the form of nasal spray or go for surgery.

However, both these treatments are not permanent cures and are associated with a number of dangers and side effects.

The Cause of Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps can be identified as small or large, teardrop shaped masses of mucus. They are usually fairly movable and result from inflamed tissue in the passages of your nose and upper air ways.

They usually start high up in the nose and grow over time, as your irritation increases.  They are non-cancerous, and can result from a number of reasons.

If you are born with a deviated septum resulting in a slightly skew nose, or if you had an accident that causes your nose to be deformed, then this can result in these mucus masses growing over time.

Another more common reason for them to appear is if you suffer from allergies which inflames and irritates the tissue in the nose.  Even poor air quality, like being shut up in a stuffy room for hours, or living in an area where the air has a lot of pollution in it, can trigger the growth of nasal polyps.

The Problem

This type of airway discomfort can be as small as a slight irritation, causing you to feel stuffy or occasionally you feel irritated in your nose. Or these polyps can result in far greater discomfort, causing serious problems and embarrassment.

These polyps often affect breathing, causing your nose to get clogged up and your nasal passages to close and resulting in you having to adopt ‘mouth breathing’, which is never a desirable trait in anyone.

It can disrupt your sleep and can cause you to be more prone to colds and illnesses as you do not use your nose to filter the air you breathe. It can also cause you to not get enough oxygen intake; affecting your concentration and athletic abilities. All these are serious problems, and really negatively affect your everyday life.

Symptoms of Nasal Polyps

Difficulty breathing and a stuffy nose are the result of nasal polyps, but there are other symptoms that help to distinguish it from just a normal common cold:

  • You have shortness of breath.
  • You yawn a lot as your body tries to compensate for lack of oxygen.
  • Your nose in continually stuffy or clogged.
  • Snoring
  • You have difficulty sleeping.
  • Your ability to smell is considerably reduced.
  • Your ability to taste food is reduced.
  • Your nose often bleeds when you blow it.
  • Standard Treatment

These mucus growths are treatable to an extent with medical help, but the problem is that medical solutions only provide short term treatment. Steroids need to be used continuously to keep the polyps down and once you stop them, the polyps will grow to a larger size then they initially were.

Besides steroids are associated with a multitude of side effects such as a weakened immune system, stunted growth, vision problems, persistent headaches, and more…

Surgery is the other option. It is expensive and many medical-aids do not pay for this type of alteration as it is deemed as cosmetic; because it alters the structure of the nose.

Worse, it is a known fact that surgery is not a permanent cure and most patients (about 70%) will experience a re-growth of the polyps in just weeks after surgery.

In addition, there are also many risks involved with surgery. Due to the fact that the surgery is so close to your eyes; there is a risk of damage to your orbits, as well as to the nasal tissue and wall and even brain fluid leaking.

Sometimes surgery leaves deep scars in your nose which are uglier than the polyps themselves.

A Natural Holistic Solution

There are a number of natural cures for nasal polyps which provide fast, effective treatment and many people report complete shrinkage in just a few days of treatment.

Natural cures for nasal polyps are free of side effects and the body does not develop a tolerance. Then, once the polyps have shrunk down, you can implement specific vitamins, minerals and nutrients in your diet to ensure that the polyps never come up again.

By including these nutrients, you will effectively prevent the blocking of the pathways which can trigger a polyp growth; for example you will keep the body in an anti-inflammatory state, and this will prevent the regrowth of nasal polyps.

In addition, these dietary changes will prove beneficial for your general health. In fact, many people find that they have more energy and get ill less often.

This is because your immune system will be in a much stronger shape, enabling your body to fight off not only the regrowth of nasal polyps but other ailments as well.
