More than half of U.S. women, and up to 45 percent of men, suffer from some type of vein problem, including spider veins. These red or blue discolorations on your skin (most often on your legs or face) resemble spider webs that can cover large patches of your body.


Although spider veins are typically not dangerous, they can be caused by a backup of blood due to weak valves in your veins, a condition that often leads to the more severe varicose veins. Varicose veins are enlarged blue-, red- or flesh-colored veins that may bulge from your skin.


They’re often found on your thighs or back of calves and can become painful or lead to complications including skin ulcers, bleeding, or blood clots.


Both spider veins and varicose veins can be distressing psychologically, and may actually be caused by a number of other factors known to increase your risk, including:


  • Age (vein problems become more common as you get older)
  • Family history
  • Hormonal changes, including pregnancy, menopause, puberty and taking birth control pills that contain the hormones estrogen and progesterone
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Lack of movement, such as sitting or standing in pone position for long periods
  • Sun exposure, which can cause facial spider veins in some people


It’s important to understand that spider veins are a milder form of varicose veins, which are often associated with underlying inflammation and can lead to more serious problems like phlebitis, or inflammation of your veins. It is this underlying inflammation that you need to target if you want to get rid of vein problems as well as prevent more from occurring.


What is the Conventional Answer to Treat Spider and Varicose Veins in Legs?


Conventional medicine currently has no ‘cure’ for varicose and spider veins, which is why their treatments focus on superficial removal. For instance, sclerotherapy involves a chemical injected into your vein, which causes it to seal shut, stop blood flow and eventually turn into scar tissue.


Other options include laser treatments, which can be quite painful and require up to five treatments for the spider veins to slowly fade and disappear. Varicose veins may also be treated with radiofrequency treatments or surgery.

  • Avoid sitting or standing for more than 30 minutes at a time; when sitting for long periods, try to go for a brief walk at least once every 30 minutes. While standing, shift your weight between your legs to promote positive blood flow
  • Elevate your legs while you’re resting to decrease the pressure on your veins
  • Avoid high-heeled shoes, as lower heels are better for blood flow
  • Avoid constricting clothing, which can cause blood to backup in your lower extremities
  • Wear compression support stocks as much as possible to slow the development of new varicose veins
