Statistics, Symptoms and Survival Rates

 

Here is a list of the most common cancers in the United States and the American Cancer Society’s predictions for patients this year. While death rates are lower than in countries without advanced medical care they’re still significantly high.

1.  Prostate Cancer — 241,740 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 28,170

 

Prostate cancer is more common in those of African American ethnicity. Aging men are at general risk for prostate cancer and should be screened regularly with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Obesity and smoking also increase the risks. This is the second most lethal cancer in men.

 

The symptoms of an advanced stage prostate cancer are seen mostly in urination disruption and abnormalities, including the need to urinate frequently, and blood or pain with urination.

 

Over 90% of cases are discovered before the cancer can spread. The 5-year survival rate is nearly 100% for these cases.

 

2. Breast Cancer — 229,060 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 39,920

 

The major risks for breast cancer include being female, aging, weight gain, alcohol and use of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT).

 

Unfortunately, breast cancer tumors are most treatable when they are small and produce no symptoms.

 

That is why, according to the American Cancer Society, it is so important to have regular screenings, self-exams and mammograms. The larger the mass becomes, the more painful it will become.

 

The 5-year survival rate for women with localized breast cancer – that is, cancer that has not spread to other tissues – is up to 99%. For cases in which the cancer has spread, the rate falls to 84%.

 

3. Lung Cancer — 226,160 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 160,340

 

Lung cancer is by far the most lethal cancer. It accounts for 28% of all cancer-related deaths. Thankfully, it is only diagnosed in 14% of cancer patients.

 

Smoking cigarettes is the biggest risk factor for lung cancer. Symptoms include a persistent cough that may have blood in it, chest pain and reoccurring pneumonia or bronchitis.

 

The 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is only 16%.

4. Colorectal Cancer — 143,460 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 51,690

 

Risk factors for colorectal cancer include aging, obesity, alcohol use, smoking and a high consumption of red meat or processed meat.

 

Like breast cancer, early stage colorectal cancer does not present symptoms. Understandably, this is one of the most under-screened cancers – only 39% of patients are diagnosed at the early stage.

 

Advanced stage symptoms may present lower abdominal pain, cramping, anemia and rectal bleeding.

 

64% of colorectal cancer patients live for 5 years after diagnosis, and 58% live up to 10 years. When detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 90%.

5. Skin Cancer and Melanoma – 81,240 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 12,190

 

While genetics can influence your susceptibility to skin cancer, other factors such as an unusual amount of moles and a history of overexposure to the sun can also play a role in developing a melanoma.

 

The best way to detect skin cancer is to pay attention to changes in your skin. Unusual changes or new moles should be examined by a doctor.

 

Most cases of skin cancer can be cured easily if detected early. The 5-year rate of survival is 91% in localized cases.

 

6. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) — 70,130 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 20,130

 

Lymphoma is essentially white blood cell cancer, wherein the B cells or T cells of the lymphatic system grow or change uncontrollably. The lymphatic system makes up the majority of our immune system.

 

Often, the cause of lymphoma is unknown. However, it is sometimes seen in aging patients who have had their immune system repressed, or in the presence of autoimmune disease.

Symptoms of lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes, itching, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.

 

The 5-year survival rate of NHL is 67%.

 

7. Bladder — 73,510 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 14,880

 

Cigarette smokers are four times more likely to develop bladder cancer than non-smokers. The most common symptom of a bladder growth is blood in the urine. There is currently no screening method for those at average risk.

 

50% of all cases are diagnosed when tumors are noninvasive. The 5-year survival rate for these cases is up to 97%. Cases with invasive tumors that have spread to a local region have a survival rate of 71%.

 

8. Kidney (Renal) Cancer — 64,770 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 13,570

 

The risk of kidney cancer is very strong if you smoke. 30% of cases can also be attributed to obesity. Hypertension and high blood pressure are also risk factors.

 

92% of kidney cancers are in the form of renal cell carcinoma, which develop in the kidney’s filtering microtubules that lead to the bladder.

 

Symptoms of a tumor include pain in the lower back or abdomen, blood in the urine, weight loss and swelling in the lower extremities.

 

The 5-year survival rate for renal cell carcinoma is 71%. However, when diagnosed at an early stage, the rate jumps up to 91%.

 

9. Thyroid — 56,460 estimated cases in 2012

 

Estimated deaths in 2012: 1,780

 

The most obvious symptom of thyroid cancer is a lump in the neck. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, swollen lymph nodes, and chronic throat pain are also signs of a growth.

 

Major risks for thyroid cancer are a family history and exposure to radiation.

 

The 5-year survival rate for thyroid cancer patients is 97% for cases that have spread to the region, but is nearly 100% for localized cases.

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Base your diet on fruits, vegetables and other foods from plant sources — such as whole grains and beans.

 

 

  • If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation.

 

  • Limit processed meats.

 

  • Stop Smoking

 

  • Avoid midday sun

 

  • Get immunized against Hepatitis B and Human papillomavirus (HPV)

 

  • Avoid unprotected sex and no sharing of needles

 

  • Get regular self-exams and screenings for various types of cancers — such as cancer of the skin, colon, cervix and breast

It stands to reason, then, that resolving your back pain at the foundational level may allow for the process of neurogenesis to resume, with potentially profound impacts on your mental health.

 

Does Treating Back Pain Enhance Your Cognitive Function?

 

People with chronic pain are more likely to have impaired cognitive ability, which makes sense since chronic pain is also associated with reduced gray matter in the brain (gray matter is associated with higher order cognitive processes).

 

A recent study of 18 chronic low back pain patients used MRI scans to confirm that both brain gray matter and cognitive ability were indeed decreased compared to those without pain.

 

Six months later, after their back pain had been successfully treated, the former chronic pain patients had marked improvements in their brains, including:

 

Increased cortical thickness in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which was correlated with the reduction of both pain and physical disability

 

Increased thickness in the primary motor cortex, which was associated specifically with reduced physical disability

 

Increased thickness in the right anterior insula, which was associated specifically with reduced pain.

 

Left DLPFC activity during an attention-demanding cognitive task was abnormal before treatment, but normalized following treatment

 

The researchers concluded:

 

“These data indicate that functional and structural brain abnormalities … are reversible, suggesting that treating chronic pain can restore normal brain function in humans.”

What is Visualization?

For example, bobsled drivers are famous for using visualization to win races. After studying the route thoroughly, they are able to see it in their mind’s eye… feel the brakes they use to steer… hear the rushing wind… and imagine the G forces and how they will feel. But isn’t this all a little “woo woo”?

 

Perhaps… until you start to look at the hundreds of documented studies available. Here are just a few.

 

One amazing study from the journal Neuropsychologia showed that it is possible to create strength simply by visualizing it. In the study, one group was given a set of finger-strengthening exercises to do for 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Another group was taught to visualize doing those exercises, without actually moving a muscle.

 

After 12 weeks, those who trained their fingers increased their finger strength by 53%. And the visualization group?! They increased finger strength by 35%! All with the power of their mind!

 

Another study from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio showed very similar results. Weight lifters increased their muscle mass by 30%, while those who only visualized exercising increased by 13.5%.

 

A similar study published in Physical Therapy measured ankle torque (important for walking). Those who exercised found a 25% gain in strength over 4 weeks. The visualizers gained 17%.

 

Why are researchers seeing such incredible results?

 

Angie LeVan, from the Clinical Research Unit at the University of Pennsylvania, has an explanation: “A study looking at brain patterns in weightlifters found that the patterns activated when a weightlifter lifted hundreds of pounds were similarly activated when they only imagined lifting,” she explains.

 

“In some cases, research has revealed that mental practices are almost as effective as true physical practice, and that doing both is more effective than either alone.”

There are actually more than 3,000 enzymes in your body, each with a specific function. You cannot survive without them, as enzymes act as catalysts for countless biological changes that take place in living organisms.

 

Some experts, such as Dr. Edward Howell, believe that you are born with a limited supply of enzyme energy, and if you don’t consume enough enzymes via your diet (in raw foods, for instance), your digestive system will become stressed and unable to properly break down your food. This could lead to a reduced availability of metabolic, i.e. proteolytic, enzymes, which he believed was at the root of most chronic health problems.

 

While it used to be thought (for more than 100 years) that enzymes consumed orally were not absorbed by your digestive tract or bloodstream, research has proven this to be wrong.

 

Orally consumed proteolytic enzymes can, and do, pass through your digestive tract and into your bloodstream for systemic effects, according to researchers, and this includes a potential role in fighting cancer.

 

Pancreatic enzymes, which are a type of proteolytic enzyme, were first used to treat and fight cancer in 1902 by a Scottish scientist, John Beard. German researchers later used them to treat and fight cancer, multiple sclerosis and viral infections, and some enzyme mixtures are still commonly used to treat cancer in several European countries, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

 

Although ACS states that “available scientific evidence does not support claims that enzyme supplements are effective in treating cancer,” there is good reason for further study.

Dr. Max Gerson developed the Gerson Therapy in the 1930s, and today it is most well-known for its role in cancer. The Gerson Therapy is a multi-faceted approach involving dietary changes (organic and plant-based) and detoxification, but enzymes are at its foundation. In addition to “copious amounts of fresh, organic juices” that are consumed every day “providing your body with a super-dose of enzymes,” patients also receive a pancreatic enzyme supplement.

 

According to one study conducted by the Gerson Research Institute, when patients with melanoma, colorectal cancer, and ovarian cancer were treated with surgery and Gerson therapy [including systemic enzymes], survival rates were higher than would normally be expected …”

 

The Gerson Therapy is not the only ‘alternative’ cancer treatment that involves proteolytic enzymes. Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez also uses pancreatic enzymes to treat cancer patients, with research showing “an aggressive nutritional therapy with large doses of pancreatic enzymes led to significantly increased survival over what would normally be expected for patients with inoperable pancreatic adenocarcinoma [cancer].”

 

Separate research also suggests that people taking pancreatic enzyme supplements may have less severe side effects while undergoing radiation therapy compared to those taking a placebo. In the US, at least one enzyme preparation is currently being studied for use along with chemotherapy in cancer patients, according to ACS.

Proteolytic Enzymes Eat Up Scar Tissue for Lunch

 

Part of what makes proteolytic enzymes so beneficial is their ability to breakdown scar tissue in your body. What does this have to do with cancer?

 

Dr. William Wong, ND, PhD, explained:

 

“CA (cancer) cells are covered with fibrin (the same stuff scar tissue is made of). Then as the cells glom together to form tumors these growths themselves are armored with fibrin. This thick protective coating is designed to prevent the body’s own defenses (i.e. Natural Killer cells, White blood cells or Oxygen) from getting inside the cell or tumor to destroy it.

Along with gaining more than 24 pounds, Spurlock had fat accumulation in his liver along with mood swings and sexual dysfunction after the month-long period. Take Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London. In order to see what happens to your gut on a fast-food diet, he had his son, Tom, eat McDonald’s for 10 days straight. After just 10 days, Tom felt lethargic and experienced withdrawal symptoms when he changed back to his normal diet.

 

Worse still, he lost about 1,400 different types (or about 40 percent) of bacterial species in his gut, and loss of microbial diversity is increasingly being recognized as a contributor to chronic disease.

 

Eating Differently for Two Weeks May Alter Your Colon Cancer Risk

 

Another study swapped the diet of African Americans with that of South Africans. The African Americans, accustomed to eating a low-fiber, western-style diet, ate a diet high in fiber (including plenty of beans and vegetables). The South Africans gave up their healthy diet for a typical western-style diet.

 

After just two weeks, the food changes resulted in “remarkable reciprocal changes” in biomarkers of colon cancer risk. The American group had significantly less inflammation in the colon and reduced biomarkers of cancer risk. The South African group, on the other hand, had significant increases in cancer biomarkers.

 

Lead author Professor Stephen O’Keefe at the University of Pittsburgh, told Science Daily:

 

“Studies on Japanese migrants to Hawaii have shown that it takes one generation of westernization to change their low incidence of colon cancer to the high rates observed in native Hawaiians. Our study suggests that westernization of the diet induces changes in biomarkers of colon cancer risk in the colonic mucosa within two weeks.

 

Perhaps even more importantly, a change in diet from a westernized composition to a ‘traditional African’ high fiber low fat diet reduced these biomarkers of cancer risk within two weeks, indicating that it is likely never too late to change your diet to change your risk of colon cancer.”

 

What are the Contributing Factors for Colon Cancer Risk?

 

Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) is the third most common cancer in the United States, excluding skin cancers. It’s estimated there will be more than 93,000 new cases of colon cancer (and 39,600 cases of rectal cancer) in 2015.

 

Although your age and family history play some role in your colon cancer risk, there are many lifestyle factors that appear to play a role as well. This includes:

 

  • A diet high in red meats and processed meats
  • Cooking meats at very high temperatures, which creates cancer-causing chemicals
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Heavy alcohol use (more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women)

 

So What Can Lower Your Colon Cancer Risk?

 

A vegetable-rich, high-fiber diet is linked to a lower risk. As reported by the American Cancer Society:

 

“Diets high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains have been linked with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer.”

 

Eating right is therefore one of the best ways to protect against this disease. As the featured study showed, it might take as few as two weeks for beneficial changes to become apparent, in large part because eating healthy has a favorable influence on your microbiome.

 

As Science Daily reported:

 

“The study found that a major reason for the changes in cancer risk was the way in which the bacteria in the gut — known as the microbiome — altered their metabolism to adapt to the new diet. In the American group, the researchers found that the African diet led to an increase in the production of butyrate, a by-product of fibre metabolism that has important anti-cancer effects.

 

Dr James Kinross, a colorectal surgeon and a member of the research group at Imperial, said: “The gut microbiome is being increasingly recognized as an important contributor to human health.

 

This research shows that gut bacteria are critically important for mediating the link between diet and colon cancer risk. This means we can look to develop therapies targeting gut bacteria as a way to prevent and treat cancer.””
