Following are some of the most relevant research findings to date:


  • Back and neck pain: Devil’s Claw, in a daily dose of 50 mg or 100 mg harpagoside, reduced back and neck pain more than a plaebo. At a standardized daily dose of 60 mg, meanwhile, Devil’s claw reduced back pain about the same as a daily dose of 12.5 mg of the painkiller Vioxx.

Vitamin K is most known for its role in blood clotting, but many are not aware that this is primarily the job of vitamin K1, or phylloquinone.

It’s relatively easy to get plenty of vitamin K1 via your diet, especially if you eat leafy green vegetables.


There’s another form of vitamin K, however, known as vitamin K2, or menaquinone, and this is made from bacteria in your intestines (as well as found in certain foods, such as fermented foods).

80 Percent May be Deficient in Vitamin K2, Putting Their Health at Risk

In fact, research shows that in people taking either vitamin D alone or vitamin D plus vitamin K2 (as the form menaquinone-7, or MK-7), those taking the K2 had a slower progression of coronary artery calcification, which may be important for lowering your risk of heart problems.

Our study may provide an additional explanation on the role of inflammation and preventing inflammation with vitamin K2 as an important mechanism of this re-emerging vitamin in sustaining health and preventing disease.


… We know that in Western populations, most people do not obtain enough due to modern diet. Our food is increasingly deficient in vitamin K2 in particular, and up to 98% of the general healthy population may be vitamin K2 insufficient with long-term detrimental impact on bone and cardiovascular health.”


In post-menopausal women, another study found that elevated intake of vitamin K2 lowered the risk of coronary heart disease — a benefit that was not associated with vitamin K1 intake.


Other research has shown that vitamin K2 may potentially have anti-cancer effects, with some research supporting its use for a reduced risk of liver cancer, and enhanced survival, as well as a potential protective role in lymphoma.


How to Increase Vitamin K2 in Your Diet


Vitamin K2 is found primarily in animal foods like meat, poultry, eggs, butter and cheese. Arthritis exercises can help to relieve joint pain and build muscle strength. Exercise is probably the last thing you have in your mind when your joints are stiff and painful.


There is this tremendous truth in the saying “if you don’t use it, you will lose it” – this is especially true for people who are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. In fact the most effective way to heal or even to relieve joint pain is to get it moving.


When we stop using our joints, the larger muscles near the joints will be weakened causing some muscle atrophy. Worse still is when the delicate ligaments and tendons around the joints also become weak and brittle because they then also get caught up in the inflammation process.


Regular exercise can actually reduce overall pain from rheumatoid arthritis. People with rheumatoid arthritis who exercise feels better about themselves and are better able to cope.


What Kinds of Exercise Can You Do to Relieve Joint Pain?


Stretching exercises are the simplest and easiest. They consist of stretching and holding different joint and muscle groups for 10 to 30 seconds each. Stretching improves flexibility and restores joint motion, and daily stretching is the basis for any exercise program.


To ease pain and stiffness, use moist heat or warm baths before and after stretching exercises. Also, warm up with light aerobic exercise such as walking for 10 minutes before stretching to decrease risk of injury.


Strength exercises involve working the muscle against resistance. This can be either with or without weights or using exercise machines or even isometrics. Isometrics involve tensing the muscle without any visible movement. Resistance training strengthens the muscle and increases the amount of activity you can do pain-free. This should be done every other day unless you have severe pain or swelling in your joints.


Conditioning exercise which is also called aerobic or endurance exercise, improves cardiovascular fitness. There are countless benefits to aerobic exercise! Among them, it makes your heart and blood vessels healthier, prevents disability, and improves mood and well-being.


Good conditioning exercises for people with rheumatoid arthritis include low-impact activities like walking, swimming, bicycling, or using an elliptical machine. Any of these will get your heart pumping and help to prevent bone loss which often occurs with rheumatoid arthritis. This should be done for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week unless you have severe pain or swelling.

After being cleared by your doctor, you should try to do 20 to 30 minutes of low-impact conditioning exercise on as many days as you feel you can. More is better, but any amount is better than none at all!


The Type of Exercises to Avoid if You Want to Relieve Joint Pain


Are there any kinds of exercise you should avoid if you have rheumatoid arthritis? In general, you should be careful about activities that put a lot of stress on a joint, or are “high-impact,” such as jogging, especially on paved roads and heavy weight lifting which can put excess stress on your joints.


That’s not to say that these activities are totally off-limits. If you’re interested in trying them, talk to your doctor first.


People with arthritis should discuss exercise options with their doctors and other health care providers. Most doctors recommend exercise for their patients. Many people with arthritis begin with easy, stretching exercises and low-impact aerobics (such as stair climbing, walking, dancing and low-impact cardio machines, like the elliptical trainer).


People with arthritis can participate in a variety of, but not all, sports and exercise programs. Your doctor will know which, if any, sports are off-limits.


Your doctor may have suggestions about how to get started or may refer the patient to a physical therapist. It is best to find a physical therapist that has experience working with people who have arthritis.
