But a new study published in JAMA Network Open reveals a simple diet change that can reduce the amount of fat in the liver by a whopping 34%.

 

It all happens in a few weeks.

 

Scientists in Washington D.C. recruited 244 participants, all with a body mass index between 28 and 40—in other words, overweight or obese. Eighty-seven percent were female and 48% were white. They had an average age of 54.4 years.

 

The participants were divided into two groups. One group was told to continue their current dietary habits while the other group was placed on a low-fat vegan diet, eating only whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes.

 

Both groups were told to leave their exercise habits unchanged.

 

Over the 16 weeks of the study, both groups ate slightly less and exercised slightly more, but because both groups changed similarly, this did not affect the study results.

 

After the 16 weeks, the vegan participants had lost an average of 13 pounds (5.9 kilograms) and they were burning 14.1% more fat than their animal-eating counterparts.

 

Even better, the amount of fat stored in their livers had decreased by 34.4%—a spectacular result, considering that they maintained this diet for only 16 weeks.

 

Compared with the animal-consumers, their muscles also stored 10.4% less fat and they were significantly more sensitive to insulin, and therefore less vulnerable to type-2 diabetes.

 

None of these health measures improved in the group whose diets remained the same.

Researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego have just published an alarming study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

 

It reveals that a common additive in many household products and toiletries causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

 

You must avoid this additive at all costs if you already suffer NAFLD.

 

Triclosan is an antibacterial additive found in many bar and liquid soaps, hand sanitizers, shampoos, deodorants, mouthwashes, toothpastes, house cleaning products, pesticides, kitchen utensils, ice makers, toys, bedding, clothes, and even surgical sutures.

 

Wherever there is a possibility of bacteria, there is a good chance that you will find triclosan in products to combat them.

 

This means that you have it all over your body, both on the inside and outside.

In the new study, scientists fed mice with type 1 diabetes a high-fat diet that, as we could expect from past research, put them at risk of developing NAFLD.

 

In addition, they fed one group of the mice triclosan to the point where they had the same amount of it in their blood as previous studies had found in humans.

 

They then examined the livers and digestive tracts of all the mice to see whether those fed triclosan differed from the others.

 

While there were signs of the development of NAFLD in all of the mice, it was substantially accelerated in the mice who were fed the triclosan.

 

When they examined the mice in detail, they even found out why this was the case.

 

Your body uses a substance called fibroblast growth factor 21 to protect your liver from damage, so when you eat a high-fat diet, your body tells its cells to produce more of this.

 

But triclosan inhibits two molecules that your cells need to produce this growth factor. In addition, triclosan also disrupts some genes that help with metabolism, including the metabolism of fat.

 

Lastly, the mice fed the triclosan had a much smaller variety of bacteria in their intestines than the others did, and the medical literature is replete with studies that show that people and other animals with a large variety of intestinal bacteria are much healthier.

 

If you want to try to avoid triclosan, you will have to buy personal hygiene and house cleaning products that are completely natural. Buying organic fruits and vegetables may also help to reduce the amount with which you come into contact.

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a pretty new concept. Twenty or thirty years ago, nobody was really talking about it.

 

Until now, most doctors have not been too worried about it unless it progressed to the more serious stages of fibrosis and cirrhosis.

 

But that will all change with a new study from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Massachusetts General Hospital, published in the journal Gut.

 

They found that even the mildest cases of NAFLD could drastically increase your chance of dying early.

 

From previous studies, scientists already knew that NAFLD increases our risk of early death, but they wanted to know whether the stages of NAFLD differ in their death risk, and by how much.

 

To find out, they consulted Sweden’s national health registers to identify 10,568 people with NAFLD and matched each of them with five controls without NAFLD from the same registers. They were matched by age, sex, year of birth, and county.

 

All of the NAFLD cases had been confirmed via liver biopsies at Swedish hospitals, with the liver samples categorized from least to most serious as steatosis, non-fibrotic steatohepatitis, non-cirrhotic fibrosis, and cirrhosis.

 

Past studies had linked only the more serious stages—fibrosis and cirrhosis—with an increased risk of death, but this study was by far the largest and most comprehensive of its kind.

 

In general, the researchers found that people with NAFLD were 93% more likely to die early than those without it: 28.6 versus 16.9 per 1,000 person-years.

 

Regarding the stages of NAFLD, they found that all levels of severity increased the subjects’ risk of dying early.

 

  1. Compared to those without NAFLD, those with simple steatosis had a 71% higher risk of death. Simple steatosis is the abnormal retention of fat in the liver.

 

  1. Compared to those without NAFLD, those with non-fibrotic steatohepatitis had a 214% higher risk of death. Non-fibrotic steatohepatitis is inflammation of the liver that is accompanied by fat accumulation.

 

  1. Compared to those without NAFLD, those with non-cirrhotic fibrosis had a 244% higher risk of death. Non-cirrhotic fibrosis is the thickening and scarring of liver tissue that occurs every time your liver tries to repair its cells after injury (such as injury caused by fat).

 

  1. Compared to those without NAFLD, those with cirrhosis had a 379% higher risk of death. Cirrhosis is the stage in which the liver has been so overrun by scar tissue that it can no longer function or repair itself. The liver is unable to regenerate or recover.

 

The deaths were eventually caused by complete liver impairment (cirrhosis), liver cancer, other cancers, or cardiovascular disease.

 

The fact that the mildest form of NAFLD can increase the risk of early death by 71% should concern us all.

 

Even more concerning is that for most people, mild NAFLD will eventually progress to stage four.

The food we eat is important for health, but often the way we prepare food can be equally important.

 

The Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences just published a study comparing how different cooking methods affect non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

 

The authors of the new study deliberately put a group of rats at risk of NAFLD by feeding them a high-cholesterol diet.

 

They fed another group of rats a normal diet.

 

In addition to these diets, they gave them a daily dose of boiled, fried, or grilled shrimp powder to see what effect it had on their cholesterol levels and their development of NAFLD.

 

Shrimp was an interesting choice, as it contains 80 percent more cholesterol than most other seafoods do. As such, many people believe that it is not as healthy as fish types with lots of omega-3, like mackerel, tuna, salmon, anchovies, herring, and so forth.

 

This belief is not backed up by research at all, as all studies that have examined the effects of shrimp on cholesterol have found that it reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol.

 

Consequently, feeding rats that are already on a high cholesterol diet a type of fish that is meant to reduce bad cholesterol is a good way to compare preparation methods.

 

In the first part of the study, they compared the effects of the preparation methods on the fat composition of the shrimp meat itself.

 

Interestingly, only frying in sunflower oil reduced the amount of saturated fats and cholesterol in the shrimp meat. It also increased omega-6 fat and reduced omega-3 fat. The latter two changes almost certainly make the meat unhealthier than it would otherwise have been, while the reduction in saturated fat is probably a good thing.

 

When they examined the rats after having fed them one of the three types of shrimp, they found that the grilled and boiled shrimp were substantially healthier, even though they contained more cholesterol than the fried shrimp.

 

Most importantly, they reduced bad cholesterol and fat in the blood and reduced the amount of fat and cholesterol that accumulated in the liver of the rats. Those who ate the shrimp fried in sunflower oil did not experience these benefits.

 

The boiled and grilled shrimp also improved their glucose and insulin tolerance, lowered their fasting glucose scores, and helped them lose some weight, compared to the rats who ate the fried shrimp.

 

Therefore, this study serves as another reminder that frying food that is supposed to be healthy can ruin its health properties and that boiling, grilling, and probably steaming, too, are healthier preparation methods.

But while we know that excessive fructose intake increases the risk of developing NAFLD, researchers are unsure why this is the case.

 

These scientists wanted to know whether fructose exercised its harmful effects directly on the liver, or whether it worked by causing systemic inflammation by breaking the linings of our intestines.

 

They conducted their study on mice in two steps: they first fed the mice a high-fructose diet and then examined what happened in their intestines and livers.

 

Consistent with their hypothesis, they noticed that the excessive breakdown of fructose in the mice’s intestines reduced the production of proteins that maintained their intestinal walls.

 

This caused their gut bacteria and the products of those bacteria to leak into their blood, in turn causing a systemic and chronic inflammatory condition called endotoxemia that has been found in both humans and animals with NAFLD.

 

They also noticed that the products of the gut bacteria increased the production of inflammatory chemicals and promoted the conversion of fructose to fat in the livers of the mice.

 

When they stimulated a production of the protein that preserved the mice’s intestinal walls and thereby prevented them from being destroyed, they no longer developed NAFLD, even when they were fed high-fructose diets.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is fast becoming the chief cause of cirrhosis of the liver and the primary reason for liver transplants in the 21st century, having replaced alcohol as the main cause of liver destruction.

But a team of Irish scientists wondered about the role of aerobic exercise in the treatment of NAFLD and set out to examine it.

 

Their study subjects, some of whom had been diagnosed with NAFLD, followed a 12-week aerobic exercise program.

 

The researchers tested their livers through biopsies before commencing this program, after its completion, and again at 12 and 52 weeks after completion.

 

The exercise program reduced liver fibrosis (scarring) and hepatocyte ballooning (liver cell death) by one category in 58 and 67 percent of subjects, respectively.

 

The intervention group was also fitter by the end of the aerobic exercise program, measured by a standard maximal oxygen consumption test.

 

The fittest participants showed the largest improvement in their liver health.

 

The crux of the study is that none of their participants actually managed to lose seven percent of their body weight, let alone the 10 percent that some specialists demand.

 

Moreover, the improvements were larger than those seen in NAFLD patients in previous studies that had lost this amount of body weight.

 

Therefore, it seems as if aerobic exercise is a better treatment for NAFLD than weight loss is.

In recent years, researchers have established that people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have intestinal bacteria that are different from those in healthy people.

 

In a new study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, a group of researchers thought outside the box to develop a new treatment method for NAFLD —starting with the guts.

 

To a large extent, the composition of one’s gut bacteria is caused by one’s diet, so the problem stems from the consumption of too much fat and sugar.

 

This is relevant to NAFLD because gut bacteria regulate what nutrients can be absorbed from food in the gastrointestinal tract.

 

Moreover, the intestines send signals to other organs that are meant to participate in the metabolism of food, like the liver; bacterial overgrowth is a common disruptor of these signals.

 

Not only are the gut bacteria of people with NAFLD different; NAFLD also results in permeable intestinal walls. This means that bacteria and the toxic by-products of those bacteria and digestion can leak into the rest of these people’s bodies, their bloodstreams, and organs like the liver in the abdominal cavity that surrounds the intestines.

 

These toxic chemicals have been linked to a wide variety of disorders including diabetes, depression, multiple sclerosis, cancer, obesity, systemic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and (of course) NAFLD.

 

This prompted the authors of the new study to investigate whether gut permeability and liver fat could be reduced by implanting the feces of healthy people into patients with NAFLD.

 

They recruited 21 NAFLD patients from London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London.

 

The researchers divided the subjects into an experimental group that received a fecal transplant from a healthy person and a placebo group that received a transplant of their own feces.

 

If you wonder how the transplant is performed, it happens via an endoscopy, i.e., a long instrument that is inserted through the anus and that delivers the fecal matter to the small intestine. Hence, no surgery.

 

After this procedure, they followed the patients for six months to investigate whether the patients’ gut bacteria changed, whether their intestinal permeability improved, whether the amount of fat in their livers decreased, and whether there was an improvement in their insulin resistance.

 

After six months, there was no change in their liver fat and insulin resistance, but their gut bacteria were substantially changed, and their gut permeability had improved significantly.

 

While researchers hoped that this procedure would reduce liver fat as well, it is still possible that liver fat would have decreased if the observation period had been longer.

 

But the fact that a fecal transplant can make our intestinal walls less permeable does mean that it might serve as a treatment in the early stages of NAFLD and in the treatment of many other diseases.

From the randomized clinical trials they surveyed, they concluded there was evidence that probiotics could promote a better gastrointestinal bacterial balance.

 

A healthier balance of good and bad bacteria promoted by probiotics has been found to have the following benefits for treating NAFLD:

 

  1. It promotes the process whereby proteins are broken down to use as energy. Then, the fat inside the protein can be used rather than stored.
  2. It reduces inflammation of the liver.
  3. It reduces scarring of the liver.

The mice in the first three groups showed a reduction in liver fat and a reduction in liver damage. The group that received no treatment saw no changes.

 

Those in the exercise plus wolfberry group saw a greater improvement than all the other groups.

 

They experienced reduced fat accumulation in liver cells, reduced oxidation of fat in the liver cells, and reduced oxidative damaged to the liver.

 

Wolfberries are a form of goji berries, which come in two colors – red and black. The wolfberry is the black variant and has the most nutritional value – it is the black pigment that is the healthiest part.

 

You can buy them in a powdered form, as a tea, or a whole fruit.

 

This study is promising for the development of a potential drug to treat NAFL. Wolfberries are however quite rare and you’d have to eat far too many to ever see any real effects, so they won’t cure your non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Every time we read “new” Alzheimer’s research, it’s just the same old thing. It focuses on the genetic factors and doesn’t tell us anything new.

Little if any attention has been paid to the connection between Alzheimer’s and the lifestyle choices we make, especially diet ones.

But recent research from scientists from the University of Bath and King’s College has found one common ingredient that has been holding Alzheimer’s hostage and even helping it manifest.

Researchers examined samples of brain matter of people with and without Alzheimer’s to reveal the damage high blood sugar causes proteins and immune cells.

When sugar (or glucose) reaches your bloodstream, many of its molecules bind to protein molecules in a process called glycation.

Not only can glycation damage proteins, the by-products of the glycation process like beta-amyloid that causes brain plaque buildup are also harmful. This suggests that too much dietary sugar contributes to Alzheimer’s.

But researchers also discovered another extremely harmful effect of glycation – at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease – it damages an enzyme called macrophage migration inhibitory factor (or MIF).

MIF enzymes are a part of your immune system. When abnormal proteins start to build up in your brain, MIF enzymes are supposed to help remove them and/or limit potential damage. But when damaged, they can’t prevent abnormal protein plaque buildup of the brain, which is how the disease gets going.

In short, if you eat too many simple sugars that build up as glucose in your bloodstream, glycation becomes likelier, putting you more at risk from Alzheimer’s.

A recent study concluded that some genuinely tasty foods may be able to control Alzheimer’s disease even better than drugs.

If you enjoy researching natural health topics and following a naturally healthy lifestyle, you have probably heard of polyphenols, the chemicals found in red wine, red grapes, berries, and several other food types. They are powerful antioxidants, which explains why naturopaths recommend them so liberally.

An increasing number of researchers have become interested in the ability of one of these polyphenols to prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. It is called resveratrol, and is a prominent ingredient in red wine, red grapes, pomegranate, dark chocolate, peanuts, and soybeans.

In September 2015, Neurology distributed an article in which a team of American researchers demonstrated that resveratrol might be an effective Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

Researchers divided 119 Alzheimer’s patients into groups that either received resveratrol or a placebo. The resveratrol group started with 500 mg per day, escalated by 500 mg every 13 weeks, for an eventual total of 2 g per day.

By the end of the year, the resveratrol group had approximately the same levels of amyloid-beta40 (Abeta40) in their blood and cerebrospinal fluid as at the beginning of the experiment. The placebo group, on the other hand, had substantially lower levels, an effect that usually accompanies the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

An MRI scan also revealed that the swelling of the brains of the resveratrol subjects had diminished considerably.

While some participants complained of nausea, diarrhea, and weight loss, resveratrol was relatively free of side effects.

The authors warned that they had used a special pharmaceutical-grade resveratrol and claimed that you would have to drink about 1,000 bottles of wine to obtain the same amount. For that reason, together with their relatively small number of participants, they advised that their findings should be further tested, rather than immediately acted upon.

The way in which resveratrol manages dementia is still being researched.

A team at Oregon’s Health and Science University reviewed the literature in the journal Brain Research Reviews, and concluded that resveratrol activated sirtuin proteins, which also happen to be activated by low calorie diets.

These proteins have been shown to protect the brain cells of mice with Huntington’s disease, a disease that causes dementia and the degeneration of brain cells.

Another study by researchers at the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease has established that resveratrol does not inhibit the production of Abeta, but rather promotes its intercellular degradation. In other words, resveratrol kills the Abeta between cells, instead of allowing it to form plaque inside them.

Pure resveratrol supplements are available from natural health stores, and you can further stack your diet with the foods that contain it. Who knows, altogether you might manage to obtain enough of it to protect your brain cells from age-related decline.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a hidden epidemic in the Western world. It worsens the effects of almost all other diseases before it even leads to liver failure.

And so far doctors have offered no real solution except giving vague suggestions of improved lifestyle habits.

But a new study published in the journal Hepatology reveals that some vegetables contain a chemical that burns your liver fat.

Our gut bacteria produce a metabolite called indole, which has anti-inflammatory properties.

As a result, a research team wondered whether indole and obesity or even indole and NAFLD are related.

They recruited 137 Chinese subjects and tested their blood for indole, tested their livers for fat, and took their weight measurements.

Those with the highest body mass index and obesity scores had the lowest levels of indole in their blood.

And those with the lowest body mass index scores and obesity scores had the highest indole levels.

In addition, the leanest people with the most indole had the least liver fat.

In an experiment done on mice, those that were given indole displayed significantly lower liver fat, scarring and inflammation.

Your gut bacteria naturally produce indole, and you can get it from certain vegetables like cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, radish, arugula, turnips, rutabaga, and watercress.

Combat Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease – This Tea Cuts Non-Alcoholic Liver Disease by 80%

In the last few years, non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) has become commonplace.

And doctors have claimed there is no cure!

But scientists from Pen State have just published some promising research in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry about one tea proven to be hugely effective when treating NAFLD.

In fact, drinking this tea may prevent or cure 80% of all NAFLD cases.

Green tea has long been known for its amazing health properties. It helps with both high cholesterol and diabetes, which is why scientists were eager to find out if it helped with NAFLD as well.

They put a large group of mice on a high-fat diet for 16 weeks and split them into smaller groups depending on the treatment they received.

One group received decaffeinated green tea extract, one group was given exercise wheels, another group received both the green tea extract and exercise wheels, and another group received no treatment at all.

After 16 weeks, they compared the liver tissue and blood and urine tests of the combination-treated mice to the untreated ones.

  1. The combination-treated group had 92 percent lower plasma alanine aminotransferase, which is a blood test that indicates liver damage.
  2. Their livers had 80 percent less fat.
  3. They had more fat in their feces.

All three of these effects could be seen in the mice that received a single treatment only, but at approximately only half of the level of the combination-treated group.

In other words, the combination-treated group had 80 percent less liver fat than the untreated group had, and the single treatment groups had just below 40 percent less.

They concluded that the combination treatment caused the mice’s digestive systems to process food differently. They also thought that the polyphenols in green tea interacted with the small intestine’s digestive enzymes to prevent fat digestion.

The most important finding was that the combination-treated group had very active genes related to the formation of new mitochondria, which are the parts of cells that produce energy, suggesting exercise and green tea together helps cells use more fat for energy.

We’ve been led to believe that liver disease is more problematic after a certain age.

But a new study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology has now revealed that a particular group of teenagers and young adults are also at risk.

For years, scientists have been ringing alarms about the increase in obesity amongst children and young adults that leads to heart disease and diabetes, but few have studied the effects on the liver.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs when your liver cells are infiltrated by fat. Scientists call this steatosis. If this isn’t treated early, it scars the liver permanently – this is called fibrosis.

Researchers from the University of Bristol analyzed the information of 4,021 participants in their 20s, all of whom had been assessed for NAFLD as teenagers.

They underwent a transient elastography FibroScan that detects liver steatosis and fibrosis.

Of those who did not have problematic alcohol habits, 20.7 percent had fatty livers, with 10 percent suffering from severe fatty liver disease.

In comparison, 25 percent of older adult populations around the world are estimated to suffer from it, implying that most of the damage is done before the age of 25.

Those who were classified as overweight or obese were more likely to have fatty livers than those at a healthy weight.

By the age of 17, only 2.5 percent suffered from moderate or severe fatty livers. It increased to 13 percent by the age of 24.

Researchers warned that the obesity epidemic among children in the West needed to be controlled to prevent further damage. They concluded these young people could remain healthy if they simply changed their diets and exercise habits.
