Back pain is pervasive throughout the adult population. It is one of the most common reasons to visit a doctor. Young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previously reported.


In fact, the use of overweight backpacks is a major contributing factor for back pain in children. In addition to overloaded backpacks, improper wearing of them may predispose a child to various health problems.


Back pain usually results from repetitive loading as well as improper mechanics.


Does your child complain or exhibit the following signs and symptoms?


  • Aching back
  • Aching neck and shoulders

  • Slumped posture: rounded shoulders, forward head
  • Posture changes when wearing a backpack

These factors may cause improper loading on the spine, which in turn can cause poor alignment of the vertebrae, which negatively impacts the function of the discs as shock absorbers.


When the backpack is too heavy or positioned poorly, this causes muscles to work harder, leading to strain and fatigue that ultimately makes the back, neck, and shoulders more susceptible to injury. This therefore causes back pain in children who carry heavy backpacks to schools.


Recommendations to insure proper and safe backpack use in order to avoid back pain in children:


  • Do not carry more than 15% of the child’s body weight. For example, a child who weighs 100 pounds, should not carry more than 15 pounds in his or her backpack
  • Utilize both straps over the shoulders. This provides better distribution of the weight. Make sure they are well padded. If the backpack has a waist belt use it to reduce the load on the shoulders and neck.
  • Load the heaviest items closest to the child’s back. Make sure the books and the other materials do not slide around.
  • Make sure the backpack is positioned across the mid back and do not allow it to hang below the waist of the child. Straps should not be loose, and should be adjusted while putting on and taking off to permit free movement of the arms without twisting and side bending the spine.
  • Parents should assist with the loading and the organization of the books and materials. Make sure the items are necessary for each particular day. If necessary, it’s OK to have the child hand carry a couple of books.


Other important considerations:


  • Listen to your child. If he or she continues to complain of pain and discomfort do not shrug it off. There are plenty of things children can do to avoid pain. Have them evaluated by a medical professional.
  • You may consider a backpack that has wheels. Make sure the extended handle is the appropriate length to prevent the child from bending and twisting excessively.
  • Be aware of your child’s habits and physical make-up. Proper exercise and nutrition are key to preventing injuries immediately as well as later in life.

Do you want to minimize back pain risk? How bad can sitting at the office or in a car or truck all day really be? Well… it can cause several structural imbalances in your body which can actually be the cause of back, neck and shoulder pain.

Yes, we Americans have found ourselves in a day-to-day work and life environment where we sit, sit, sit! We sit at work, in the car, on the couch, at the table, on a park bench. And all this sitting has not only caused a decrease in healthy physical activity, it has led to weight gain and yes, chronic back pain.

Below is a list of the numerous physical conditions that develop over time from prolonged sitting, and what you can do to minimize back pain risk.


1.The longer you sit the more likely your pelvis will flare, meaning it can rotate outward, inward, backward or downward. And it can happen on one or both sides. Even worse, you can develop a combination of these incorrect positions. For example, you can have one side rotated forward, outward and high, while the other side rotated backward, inward and low.


2.The longer you sit the more likely your glutes (buttock muscles) will flatten. This means they will weaken, as lack of use “shuts them down.”


3.The longer you sit the tighter and more dominant your hip flexors will become in order to stabilize your pelvis. What happens is that your hip flexors will inhibit your glutes from working. That’s right: your hip flexors will “turn off” your glutes and the only way to get them going again is to minimize the sitting to restore physical balance…


This is a good time to give you a quick test. Do it slowly and in control as this may not be for everyone. So do it at your own pace and risk. If you have had a THR, DO NOT perform this activity!


Begin by putting your heels together. Rotate your feet outward like a duck and then squeeze your butt. You should notice a very strong contraction. Relax.


Now rotate your toes inward so that your toes are touching and your heels are rotated out as far as they can go. Now squeeze your butt. You will note much less of a contraction.


That inability to squeeze your glutes is proof that your glutes are inhibited or “turned off” and a sure sign that you need to get your butt stronger…

Please feel free to do 10 to 20 of these toe-in glute squeezes per hour every day, to keep your glutes working.


4.The last major effect of siting is that your pelvis will tend to tip backwards. This puts undo stress on your pelvis, SI Joint (sacroiliac joint), and your entire spine. It is virtually impossible to keep your pelvis in a neutral position for an entire workday, so at some point during the day you lose it and when you multiply that by 20 to 30 years… you have a life time of back related issues, unless addressed…


Action Steps to minimize back pain risk from sitting at work…


When the phone rings, stand up… If you do not need to be typing, get out of the sitting position for 5 to 10 minutes and you will give your body a great break. In fact, talking on the phone is a great time to do the toe-in glute squeezes. How many can you do in a 10 minute call?

Change sitting positions… I personally have four different settings for my desk. I sit in my chair, I have a kneeling chair, I sit on a therapy ball (size 75cm) and I kneel on a foam pad that puts my pelvis straight and at just the right height. Now I do not use all of them every day but rather rotate them on different days.

Use Trigger Point work to release your hip flexors… The best way to do this is to seek a massage therapist; however you can use a foam roller, as well as other trigger point devices on the market, such as out Trigger Point Therapy kit…

Lavender essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the Lavender plant through distillation. The plant has a distinctive scent and it has traditionally been used to manufacture perfumes.  Today lavender essential oil has many uses including in cosmetics such as lotions and soaps as well as in gels and for aromatherapy.


Lavender essential oil has many health benefits and is particularly good for skin care. In fact the name of the plant comes from the Latin lavare which means to wash.


Lavender was also commonly used by the Romans as an addition to bath water not only because of its scent but because it was believed to restore the skin. A few drops of the oil mixed with water provide an effective washing agent that has considerable benefits for skin as outlined below.


Lavender has many benefits for the skin because lavender essential oil has natural antifungal and antiseptic properties. Lavender essential oil can also be used to treat insect bites and is an effective insect repellent (particularly for mosquitoes). It is also widely used as massage oil since it is said to have a soothing, relaxing effect.


To get relief from tight and sore muscles, massage the painful parts with a lavender essential oil mix. To prepare the mix, add 10 ml of carrier oil like jojoba oil to 5 drops of lavender oil. This massage is also beneficial for sustained injuries.Lavender essential oil thus helps to tone the skin and is effective against a variety of skin problems.


You can stop a nosebleed by putting a drop of Lavender essential oil on a tissue and wrapping it around a small chip of ice.  Push the tissue covered ice chip up under the middle of the top lip to the base of the nose and hold as long as comfortable or until the bleeding stops (do not freeze the lip or gum).


You can put 1 to 2 drops of lavender essential oil on a tissue or handkerchief and inhale it whenever required for instant relief from respiratory disorders like bronchitis, throat infections, and asthma especially when asthma is associated with emotional trauma. Lavender oil mixed with lemon is used in vaporizers and humidifiers.


You can add one drop of lavender oil to water and give the person suffering from fever a sponge bath with this water to reduce fever. This remedy is safe for children and adults.


You can apply lavender essential oil as needed to areas of chapped lips in the dry winter season to relieve dry, burning, chapped lips and to promote healing and moisturizing effects.


Lavender essential oil can triple as a bactericide, moisturizer and reliever of pain, itching and dryness caused by dry, cold winter conditions. Try a few drops as needed and rub into the chapped areas of the fingers and hands.


Lavender essential oil is also good for our hair. You can rub several drops of lavender oil into the scalp to help eliminate dandruff.


Alopecia areata is an auto-immune dysfunction where the hair falls out, often in clumps or patches. In one study documented by the University of Maryland Medical Center, 86 alopecia areata patients went through a split test. Both subjects massaged the scalp daily for 7 months, whereas only half used essential lavender oil during the massage. The experimental group that used Lavender oil reported significant hair re-growth over the control group that simply used scalp massage alone.


Organic lavender essential oil can also be used in diffusers that scent your room. They might use a candle, a light bulb, or electricity to heat the essential oils.


Light bulb rings are very easy to use. You simply place a metal or ceramic hollow ring on top of a bulb that is used in a lamp, place a few drops of oil in the ring, and then turn the light on. The heat from the bulb releases the fragrance.


Candle diffusers offer a basin for the oil, with a candle below to provide the heat. Electric diffusers are useful for scenting an entire room, and often come with small fans built in to spread the fragrance.


Lavender essential oil works much the same as tea tree oil when it comes to disinfectant properties and also lends its aromatic benefits of stress relief and relaxation, as well as anti-inflammatory benefits, relief of respiratory conditions, headaches and migraines, to name just a few.


You just rub 2 to 3 drops of lavender oil in your cupped palms, and then use the inhalation method to draw the scent all the way into your amygdala gland (the emotional warehouse) in your brain to calm the mind.


You can also rub lavender essential oil on the feet, temples, wrists (or anywhere such as the pillow) for an immediate calming effect on the body and help you to sleep well. In fact, you can alleviate the symptoms of motion sickness by placing a drop of Lavender oil on end of tongue, behind the ears or around the navel.


To relief menstrual cramp, besides using very warm compresses, you can also apply lavender essential oil around the abdomen while inhaling the diffuse vapors to help calm and relax the muscles, mind and body for less severe cramping.


When you draw a bath, you can add 8 drops of lavender oil to the bath along with the bath salts. This bath is very helpful for relaxing aching muscles and will calm the body. You can also add 5 drops of lavender oil in a bowl and dip your hands or feet in this solution. This will relax tired feet and soothe sore hands.


You can add a few drops of lavender essential oil in a nice cup of hot tea which can help as a nice wind-down drink after dinner or with a decaffeinated tea before bed. It can also be used with a nice Chamomile tea or “Sleepy time” tea before bed or when trying to relax.


As you can see, Lavender essential oil can uplift your life (and mood), heal and entice in a variety of ways. It’s a great secret weapon to have on hand at all times!


One thing you have to take note is not all lavender oil is the same! Please be aware that when you buy lavender oil at spas, health food stores and even online, most are not therapeutic grade!  Young Living lavender oil is.  Does your lavender essential oil bottle say NOT for internal use???  If so, throw it away!  It is not pure lavender essential oil.  Pure lavender essential oil is edible!!
