What I am going to write here is about prostrate cancer which only affects men. Here are some of the basic facts about prostrate cancer and what men can do to protect themselves.


Where is the prostrate gland? It is located in the front of the lower end of the large intestine and below the bladder. Its main function is to produce the fluid that nourishes and protects sperm cells.


Prostrate cancer occurs when cells in the prostrate grow and multiply uncontrollably. It is the fifth most common cancer in Singaporean males and the most common in American men.


Like all other forms of cancer, early prostrate cancer often has no symptoms. If symptoms are present, they can vary from man to man and may include:


(1)   frequent, difficult or painful urination

(2)   not being able to urinate

(3)   weak or interrupted urine flow

(4)   blood in the urine

(5)   blood in sperm

(6)   painful ejaculation

(7)   frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips or upper thighs


The risk of prostrate cancer increases with age (over 50), genes (highest rate occurs in black men), family history and diet (too much of red meat and high fat diary products).


How should you protect yourself?


(1)   The best defense against prostrate cancer is to have regular screening especially if you belong to the high risk category.


(2)   Regular exercises


Aerobic exercises such as running, jogging, walking, cycling are one of the strongest preventers of diseases. Exercises can improve your blood circulation and boosts your immune system. Due to the stressful urban living lifestyle, finding the time and motivation to exercise regularly can be difficult for some. You can engage in aerobic exercises in a group. For example, in some dating outings, you can get your date to exercise with you such as arranging jogging, strolling or cycling in a park or along the beach. Or, you can arrange regular family outings to engage in exercise activities and this will definitely strengthen the bond among family members.


(3)   Proper diet


We are what we eat. Besides improper lifestyle, what we eat to a certain extent can increase the risk of getting chronic illness such as hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases or getting cancer. Do you know that eating too much barbecued foodstuff can increase the risk of getting cancer?

(b)   Soybean is a high protein legume which can be eaten in various forms such as soy milk, soy bean curd or tofu and protein powder. Soy products like tofu contain several types of phytoestrogens that could help to prevent both prostrate and breast cancer by blocking and suppressing cancerous changes in cells.  However, there are some precautions to consider when adding soy to your diet. Moderate daily consumption of up to four or five ounces of tofu or other soy product is ok. Beyond this amount, soy products may cause hormone imbalance that stimulate cancer growth.

(c)    Tomatoes consist of an antioxidant compound called lycopene which according to some research studies can help men to reduce the risk of getting prostrate cancer. So, you can now spice up your meal with ketchup, tomato soup, or add few slices of tomatoes to your dish or you can just eat it raw like you are eating an apple.

(d)   Licorice root has a chemical called glycyrrhizin that blocks a compound of testosterone and therefore may help to prevent the growth of prostrate cancer. But excessive consumption of them can lead to high blood pressure.


(4)   Masturbating/regular sex


Masturbating is probably the laziest, easiest and less time consuming way to prevent prostrate cancer. It is the act of ejaculation (which can also achieve through normal sex) that helps the prostrate to cleanse itself of any cancer-causing carcinogens. I personally don’t advocate masturbating too often because this can have the side effect of causing premature ejaculation and your sex partner will become “high and dry” as well as being sexually-deprived. I think regular sex is a better alternative than masturbating.

Other more specific studies try to find out about women’s preference between length and girth, still cannot come to any conclusion about preferable size.


OK, let’s come out with some scientific facts and figures to put to rest some of the claims and myths about whether or not penis size matters and what is normal for the majority of men. A worldwide study of over 40 independent penis size research projects undertaken since 1942 has come up with a general penis size guideline. Feedback from over 11,000 survey participants put the average erect size of the adult penis is between 5.5 inches to 6.2 inches in length and 4.7 inches to 5.1 inches in girth.
