The palatine tonsils are two small masses of soft, lymphatic tissue that are located on either side of the back of the tongue at the rear of the throat.

 

Each of these tonsils is covered by pink mucosa that is covered by small channels called crypts. The tonsils function as part of the immune system, defending the mouth, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract from infectious agents.

 

Sometimes, however, the tonsils themselves may become infected and swollen. When this happens, the condition is referred to as tonsillitis.

 

Tonsillitis usually occurs as the result of a virus or a bacterial infection; less frequently, tonsillitis may also be caused by fungal or parasitic infections as well.

 

As a result, individuals who develop tonsillitis generally experience symptoms such as a sore throat, swollen tonsils, a fever, difficulty swallowing, a headache, and voice loss. This condition is highly contagious and may be spread easily to others through contact and body fluids.

 

In contrast, tonsil stones are small, whitish blobs that become lodged in the crypts of the tonsils.

 

Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, occur when accumulated debris, mucus, and microorganisms hardens into tiny masses. This condition involves symptoms like bad breath, a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, earaches, and visible white debris at the back of the throat.

 

Although both tonsillitis and tonsil stones involve tonsils that are swollen, red, and have white patches, the two conditions are not interchangeable.

 

The inflammation is similar in both conditions, which leads to similar effects like a sore throat, painful swallowing, and white marks at the back of the throat.

 

However, for people with tonsillitis, the white marks on the tonsils are due to pus. For those with tonsil stones, the white marks on the tonsils are the stones themselves.

 

Additionally, individuals who experience chronic tonsillitis have a high risk of developing tonsil stones, as repeated inflammation in the tonsils can facilitate the accumulation of debris.

If your child is suffering from persistent flare-ups, the bed and some areas of your house may be infested with these tiny critters.

Know Your Enemy

Protecting Your Child from Dust Mites

 

The bedding is one of the common sources of dust mites, which can easily set off an eczema flare-up. This can be a problem with small children who are known to spend an average of 14 hours in their beds. With this in mind, the best way to manage eczema triggers is to control dust mites.

 

Here are some tips:

 

Air the beddings daily. Make sure comforters, cots and mattresses are aired daily. Leave them out under the sun for a couple of hours and clean the thoroughly.

 

Use 60°C hot wash. When it comes to cleaning the beddings, warm washing is highly recommended to effectively get rid of dust mites. You can soak the beddings with 1 part eucalyptus oil and 120 parts warm water for about 30 minutes.

 

Wash pillows and duvets regularly. Make sure to buy a spare duvet and pillows to allow you to clean them twice a week.

 

Avoid putting your kids to bed with wet hair. As mentioned, dust mites thrive in warm and moist environment. Wet hair can dampen the pillow, which will provide a perfect breeding ground for dust mites.

 

Finding an effective eczema treatment is never a one step process.  It is made up of combined efforts to eliminate exposure to known eczema triggers and fortifying the body to allow healing from within with an effective eczema diet plan.

 

This will require you to avoid foods that can trigger eczema which also include processed foods and have more of those foods that can help the body to build the immune system to combat eczema.

Is your morning coffee an ok option on your healthy eating plan? Is coffee really bad for you or is it actually good?

 

I get these questions about coffee and health all the time and as a coffee drinker myself, it is smart to take a look at both the good and the bad.

 

Now, I’m not here to tell you that coffee is good for you. If I did, I would be telling only the good side of the story and I’m no politician.

 

I am here to give you the good and the bad and tell you how you can incorporate your favorite coffee or tea into your healthy meal plan.

 

The Ugly Facts about Caffeine

 

Most coffee and tea contains a lot of caffeine. This is usually the primary reason people make coffee their drink of choice in the morning. Caffeine is a drug like any other and comes with a long list of side effects.

 

Have you ever tried not having your coffee in the morning? Yeah, pass the Excedrin, right? The headache that comes on when you try and kick this habit can be brutal (just like with other drugs) and creating a dependency and addiction like this is harmful to the body.

 

Second, coffee is extremely acidic. Our bodies function at optimum levels when they are slightly more alkaline (the opposite of acidic). This means your blood must maintain a pH of approximately 7.4 for optimum health and performance.

 

It is best for us to greatly reduce any foods that will drive our body’s pH to be more acidic and eat more foods that are alkaline (like fruits and veggies).

 

To maintain health, the diet should consist of 60% alkaline forming foods and 40% acid forming foods.  To restore health, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods. Also, an alkaline body has a much stronger immune system, making illness much less likely.

 

Here is a list of Alkaline Foods, especially High Alkaline Foods:

 

  • Examples of Alkalizing Vegetables:Beets, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Celery, Cucumber, Kale, Lettuce, Onions, Peas, Peppers, Spinach

  • Alkalizing Protein:Almonds, Chestnuts, Tofu

 

  • Alkalizing Spices:Cinnamon, Curry, Ginger, Mustard, Sea Salt

 

 

An acidic body pH is like a magnet for all kinds of illnesses. For the sake of your health, you should avoid the following 7 highest acidic foods

 

  • Cola/Soft Drinks
  • Ice Cream
  • Sugar
  • Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Fats/Trans Fats
  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
  • Yeast
  • Sweeteners

 

Last but not least, the caffeine in coffee and tea is an abuse to your adrenal glands. Your adrenals release your “fight or flight” hormones basically giving you a nice “boost” when needed.

 

Unfortunately, people who drink coffee all day long are consistently beating on their adrenals. This is the equivalent of whipping a tired horse even when he is exhausted. Eventually he will not move at all.

The Pretty Facts about Caffeine

 

Coffee tastes oh so yummy and makes me feel great in the morning. (What? Is that not a good enough reason to drink it?)

 

Many studies have shown that coffee can help in the prevention and treatment of diseases and illnesses as varied as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, liver disease, skin cancer, Parkinson’s disease and more.

 

Although, I don’t believe coffee would be the cure all to any of these diseases, many ancient cultures did rely on the coffee bean to cure a long list of ailments. Not to mention, small doses of caffeine can increase performance and mental focus.

 

Green tea is also a great drink to include with a long list of benefits. If nothing else, green tea is a wonderful source of antioxidants which are important in cancer prevention.

 

Green tea has even been found to raise metabolism and aid in fat burning. Before you go take a green tea bath, its effects are really minor when compared to the effects of sound nutrition and exercise plans.

 

Now that I’ve said that, don’t think you can eat junk food and just wash it down with green tea!

What is a coffee and tea drinker to do?

 

  1. Limit your coffee and tea intake to 2 — 8 oz cups per day. No, not 2 of each, 2 total. Any more than that is considered as a heavy addict. (I know. I’ve been there.)

 

  1. If you are currently dependent on a lot of caffeine each day, replace 1 or 2 cups of coffee with green tea instead. Green tea has much less caffeine than coffee and will help combat the ugly detox symptoms.

 

  1. Do not jack up your coffee with sugar, milk, syrup and whip cream (So I guess that means no Starbucks, huh?). Use stevia or xylitol to sweeten and avoid all the empty, harmful calories. A teaspoon of half and half won’t hurt either.

 

Please oh please, do not use any of those flavored creamers. They are closer to someone’s chemistry experiment than they are to real food.

 

  1. Make sure to make your food choices healthy. Avoiding other acidic foods like sugar, artificial sweeteners and processed foods will lighten the acid load on the body.

 

  1. Make sure the coffee you drink is organic. Conventional coffee is filled with pesticides and chemicals and should be avoided at all costs.

 

There is no need to give up your morning coffee but it is important to drink the right types of coffee, without the added unhealthy extras and, as with most things, in moderation.

Like yoga, Pilates excels at working your core muscles, which stretch from your mid-back to your knees. As you strengthen these muscles, you gain extra support for your spine, which not only helps relieve pain but also improves posture (a key element in maintaining a healthy back).

“Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. With systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable not only as a fitness endeavor, but also as an important adjunct to professional sports training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds.

Major Results Using Pilates for Back Pain

 

If you know anyone who does Pilates (or have done it yourself), you’ve probably heard how great it can make you feel. But you needn’t rely solely on anecdotes, as there’s an impressive (and growing) body of research that supports the effectiveness of Pilates for back-pain relief.

 

In people with persistent, non-specific low back pain, Pilates provide superior pain relief than minimal intervention, according to a meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials.

 

Pilates resulted in a significant reduction in pain intensity and disability among people with non-specific low back pain after one, three and six months.

 

Adults with chronic low back pain reported a significant decrease in low back pain and disability after participating in a four-week Pilates program — and the benefits lasted over the 12-month follow-up period.

 

People who engaged in specific exercises geared toward training the core muscles, including muscles surrounding the spine, had a significant reduction in pain intensity and functional disability, with the benefits persisting for the entire 30-month follow-up period. Although this doesn’t specifically test Pilates, core strengthening is an integral part of Pilates’ principles.

 

As reported in Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine:

 

“It follows the Pilates method would be beneficial for patients with LBP [low back pain] because it improves absolute core strength and moreover encourages proper activation patterns of core musculature. For example, the foundation of the mat program is a group of exercises that train core stabilization; when proper recruitment patterns are demonstrated, more challenging exercises are progressively added to improve core strength.

 

… in addition to the role core strengthening plays in benefiting patients with CLBP [chronic low back pain], one must also consider the impact of the mental component of Pilates. Like yoga, the Pilates’ principles of breathing and concentration are no doubt intricately tied to the mechanism behind its effectiveness for the CLBP population.”
