New Insight-Transformation of Migraines Causes Fibromyalgia

Migraines are thought of as normal neurological functions interspersed with episodes of headaches.  At least 20% of migraineurs meeting the International Headache Society criteria have changed the pattern from episodes of migraine into patterns of chronic headache.

Chronic headache often does not return to normal neurological function.  This evolving process from episodic headache to chronic headache is called transformation.  In the population segment of chronic daily headache, migraine appears to be a progressive neurological disease.  The decline of normal neurological function between episodes of migraine greatly exacerbates the migraine syndrome.

Transformation is a process that occurs usually over years.  Usually the migraineur starts off having acute episodic migraines.  As someone continues to have migraines over time, the pain can occur more often and start merging together with a mixed headache pattern of lower severity migraines intermingled with more severe episodes.

The mixed headache pattern can further transform into chronic daily headache.  These transformed headaches can be caused by rebound phenomenon or can happen by reasons that are not fully understood at the present time.

A threshold can refer to a horizontal piece of building material beneath a doorway or window, but the meaning is different in medical jargon.  Threshold refers to the point at which stimulus or stimuli are of sufficient intensity to produce an effect.  The threshold for migraines can be lowered (migraines may happen more easily) by having repeated migraines.  Facilitation or kindling describe this phenomenon.

Migraines make the sensitive body more sensitive.  In other words, migraines breed migraines.  The lower threshold for migraines is made easier as though kindling were put on a fire.  Uncontrolled migraines not only cause more migraines but eventually cause transformed migraines.  A severe stimulus, injury, illness, or stress can provoke the nervous system to generate uncontrolled migraines.  The migraine pain changes over time.  This change is called transformation.

You can imagine one of your kid’s transformers changing from a robot to a plane or car, but can you imagine your migraines changing from a more classic presentation to chronic neck pain, sinus pain, or constant headache.  Well believe it or not, over time migraines do transform.  Usually a decade or more is necessary for transformation of episodic to chronic migraine.

One of the sincere goals of my new book, Doctor, “Why Do I Feel This Way?”, is to prevent transformation in migraineurs who have not reached this stage.

An example of severe stimulus is smoking.  The trigeminal nerve (sensation of the face) and the cervical (neck) nerves are adjacent to each other in the brain stem (the base of the brain).  What affects one affects the other.  Migraineurs who smoke usually will develop neck problems.  It is absolutely essential for the migraineur who smokes to abstain!  Smoke is a smell.  The sensitivity to the smell is the problem!

Also, second-hand smoke, perfumes, and severe allergies are major problems.  Neck pain can be debilitating and frustrating.  The migraineur with neckaches can develop extreme sensitivity to stress and after years will frequently develop fibromyalgia.  To find out more, go to migrainesyndrome.net

Pain Relief – Fibromyalgia Pain Treatments for Pain

If you hurt all over your body, and frequently feel exhausted, gone through numerous tests to find out what is wrong with you and even then, your doctor can’t find anything specifically wrong with you; your pain may very well be a result of Fibromyalgia.

If you experience tender points on places on places like your neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms or legs that hurt when touched you may have Fibromyalgia. If you have other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, and problems with thinking and memory, sometimes called “fibro fog,” you may have Fibromyalgia.

Well, not that this is a comforting thought, but you are not alone. Over ten million Americans suffer from the symptoms of Fibromyalgia pain.

This condition overall is characterized by chronic pain felt throughout your entire body, mainly in the muscles and ligaments. Pain is typically felt in your neck, back, shoulders, hands, and pelvic area; but anywhere in the body can be affected with pain.

Fibromyalgia sufferers also endure general fatigue and sleep disturbances. So, it is easy to understand why most sufferers seek Fibromyalgia pain treatments that work for them. Thankfully, various Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief exist.

If you are one of five to seven percent of the population who suffer from Fibromyalgia, the following Fibromyalgia pain treatment information may help you find and get pain relief.

Medications Used for Fibromyalgia Pain Treatments for Pain Relief.

Pain treatment is generally in the form of a pill. Many people agree that the best Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief come in pill form. There are many medications that are used as Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief, but it is necessary for you to visit your doctor to determine the extent of and devise a treatment plan for your specific condition with your doctor and receive a prescription, as over-the-counter drugs are not usually strong enough to alleviate the pain associated with Fibromyalgia.

Antidepressant’s (Paxil, Prozac), sleep medications (Lunesta, Ambien), anti-epileptics (Neurontin), and muscle relaxants (Flexeril) can all be used as Fibromyalgia pain treatments for pain relief. Many of these medications relieve sufferer pain so you can sleep at night, therefore allowing for the deep-level sleep needed for tissue repair and other body functions specific to your condition and level of pain.

Sometimes the causes of neck and back pain are obvious – hours spent hunched over your steering wheel or computer … an injury from a weekend basketball game … or wrenching your back while digging in your garden, for example.

Other times, your neck and back may ache and you have no idea why. This is perhaps most frustrating of all, as when you’re unclear on the cause it can be difficult to accurately treat and, better yet, cure.

If you have unexplained neck or back pain, here’s an unexpected factor to consider for pain relief: your clothes. In fact, even if you know the reason for your pain, your clothing could be making it worse.

Avoid These Items for Pain Relief if You Have Neck or Back Pain

If you have neck or back pain and want quick pain relief, stop wearing the following items …

  1. Spanx

Spanx and other constrictive garments are popular to give your body a sleeker shape, but because they work through constriction, they also put you at risk of nerve damage, similar to skinny jeans (see below).

Along with causing compressed nerves, fitted, constrictive shapewear like Spanx may interfere with digestion by restricting your bowels, leading to abdominal pain.

If you wear these types of garments, only do so occasionally and be sure it’s not so tight that it’s uncomfortable (and keep in mind, any tight garment, such as a tight belt or control-top pantyhose can cause similar issues).

  1. Flip-Flops

The lack of structure of flip-flops, including having to “hold” them on with your toes as you take each step, actually alters your gait, leading to a shorter stride length and a larger ankle angle as you grip the shoes with your toes.

Not only can this cause issues with your lower legs, knees and hips, but also wearing flip-flops can cause back pain. According to Auburn University researcher Justin Shroyer:

“We found that when people walk in flip-flops, they alter their gait, which can result in problems and pain from the foot up into the hips and lower back … Variations like this at the foot can result in changes up the kinetic chain, which in this case can extend upward in the wearer’s body.”

  1. High Heels

Wearing high heels alters muscle-coordination patterns in your trunk and hips, which research suggests may lead to “abnormal spine loading patterns and increases the risk for developing musculoskeletal injuries.”

If you must wear heels, keep them short and limit the amount of time you spend in them.

  1. Heavy Backpacks

When you carry a heavy backpack, it may cause changes in postural angles and increased pain. Among children, research shows worsening postural changes in those carrying backpacks in accordance with weight of the pack and time spent carrying the load.

This puts the children at increased risk of pain, which, in turn, is a strong predictor of back pain in adulthood as well. This warning holds true for adults, too, however, especially if you carry an overly stuffed backpack regularly.

  1. Tight Neckties

If your necktie is too tight, it can lead to less range of motion in your neck and increased muscle tension in your back, neck and shoulders. How tight is too tight? If you can’t slip a finger between your neck and your shirt collar, your tie is too tight.

  1. Skinny Jeans and Pencil Skirts

The problem with skinny jeans and pencil skirts is they can make it difficult to move naturally. When you need to bend over, you may not be able to bend at your knees, potentially leading to a pulled muscle or disc problems. Both skinny jeans and pencil skirts can also change your normal walking gait and posture, leading to back pain.

  1. Heavy Necklaces

Your neck is already responsible for supporting the weight of your head. A heavy necklace can be the tipping point.

As chiropractor Tim Hutchful of the British Chiropractic Association told the Daily Mail:

“Anything that pulls the neck forwards or backwards tips the head away from its point of neutral balance … This can create neck tension, pain and damage, and long-term could encourage a slouched posture with damaging consequences for the back.”

  1. Halter Tops

Halter tops have a tendency to pull your neck forward as they don’t distribute weight evenly across your shoulders. This is especially true for women with a large bust and may occur from any type of halter top, sports bra, bikini top, etc.

Hutchful continued:

“The strain on your neck will create muscle tension and can pull you in to a highly damaging form of posture called “anterior carriage” where the neck sticks forwards on the body, with the shoulders rounded and slumped.”

  1. Improperly Fitted Bras

An improperly fitted bra will not give you the proper support, which can put you at risk of back and breast pain. Thin straps are common culprits, as thicker straps can help to spread out the pressure on your shoulders.

Richard Moore, a consultant osteopath and sports massage therapist, told the Daily Mail:

“If you are well endowed, an ill-fitting, unsupportive bra can cause you to slump and fold your shoulders forward, and lead to painful postural disorders.”

For best results, see a specialist for professional bra fitting.

Relieve Your Pain Fast With Soothing Deep Heat

If you struggle with back or neck pain and want quick pain relief, I can’t say this enough: a far-infrared heating pad is a must. Keep one at the office and one at home. You’ll be so glad you did, because as soon as you apply it to your back or neck you’ll feel soothing deep heat.

This is where far-infrared heating pads blow ordinary heating pads out of the water. Far-infrared rays lead to vibration effects at the molecular level, which improves transportation of oxygen and nutrients, ultimately helping to support regeneration and healing.

The heat given off by ordinary heating pads, on the other hand, will only penetrate your skin, not the deep layers of tissues underneath, where pain resides.

The thermal effect of deep heat on your tissues causes blood vessels in capillaries to dilate, which improves blood circulation and promotes pain-relief healing and wellness. Researchers have, in fact, stated:

“ … heat doesn’t just provide comfort and have a placebo effect – it actually deactivates the pain at a molecular level in much the same way as pharmaceutical painkillers work.”

While the pain-relieving effects of ordinary heating pads usually disappear as soon as the heat is removed, far-infrared rays offer much longer pain relief, as the heat is capable of penetrating down two to three inches (compared to just 2-3 mm for regular heating pads).

But don’t take my word for it. The Deep Heat collection of far-infrared heating pads come in three sizes to fit your unique pain.

The Ultra, for instance, is designed for neck, back and spine pain relief. Every feature — from the lengthwise canal that keeps pressure off of your vertebrae to heating stones placed precisely for the hard-to-reach (and relax) paraspinal muscles along your spine …. to cervical support for your neck — sends penetrating heat deep into every square inch of your back.

Try LosetheBackPain.com’s Far-Infrared Back Pain Heating Pad for quick pain relief for 90 days risk-free — if you’re not thrilled with it, you get your money back.

When you visit your doctor you expect to be getting the best advice and treatments that modern medicine has to offer. But the term ‘modern medicine’ is all relative — and doesn’t necessarily equate to the ‘best’ care.

For instance, morphine, opium, arsenic and mercury are all examples of what were once ‘modern-day’ cures. Decades later, hindsight is 20/20, as they say, since we now know the toxicity of such compounds.

It would be naive to believe, however, that there aren’t some well-accepted medical dogmas being regarded as the best standard of care right now, in 2013, that will one day be seen as equally as insane as soothing teething babies with morphine syrup …

Toward that end, we’ve compiled some of the craziest outdated medical procedures, including some that are still in use today, especially in relation to back pain, pain management and weight loss.

Craziest Outdated Medical Procedures from Then and Now

  1. Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery such as gastric banding and gastric bypass is on the rise, but did you know that nearly 40 percent (that’s close to half) of weight-loss surgery patients face serious side effects like malnutrition, infection, liver failure or sometimes death?

Gastric banding is so hit or miss that one in three patients experience band erosion and close to half must have the bands removed (the surgery has a re-operation rate of 60 percent!).

In order to qualify for weight loss surgery, patients typically have to commit to dietary and lifestyle modifications, and many must lose weight prior to the surgery. If you can lose weight, and make diet and exercise changes, for the surgery, you can do it to lose weight without it … and far more safely, at that.

While weight loss surgery does often work, it carries the extreme risk of death and sometimes permanent injury, so choosing to undergo it is a gamble, not unlike using some of the premier weight-loss solutions of the 19th century (like FatOff Obesity Cream, which claimed to ‘reduce superfluous flesh’ with unknown consequences).

  1. Bloodletting

In ancient times, everything from migraine headaches to seizures was treated with bloodletting, in which varying amounts of blood would be drained from your body to rid it of toxins.

It is now believed that many may have died from overzealous bloodletting (including George Washington, who reportedly was drained up 5 to 7 pints in the days leading up to his death).

Interestingly, there may be some merit to bloodletting after all, as research published in 2012 found that obese people with metabolic syndrome had improved blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular disease after just two sessions of blood donation (likely because it reduced their levels of iron).

  1. Bed Rest for Back Pain

It used to be standard to recommend prolonged bed rest to heal back pain, and many physicians still do recommend it. However, now research shows that continuing on with your daily activities leads to better flexibility while bed rest along may make back pain worse (while also leading to depression, blood clots and decreased muscle tone).

It’s now advised that people with back pain resume normal activities as much as possible, and even engage in exercise to speed recovery.

  1. Aspirin or Ibuprofen for Joint Pain

One of the most common uses for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is for treating osteoarthritis, a leading cause of joint pain (NSAIDs include aspirin, Celebrex, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve and others).

But clinical studies show that NSAIDs disrupt cartilage synthesis and actually speed up the destruction of cartilage and joints. In other words, they may actually harm your joints and ultimately make joint pain worse!

You might as well rub on some Hamlin’s Wizard Oil — a popular 1800s-era liniment (that could also be taken internally) that claimed to cure rheumatism and pain (and contained such ingredients as ammonia, chloroform, turpentine and alcohol (up to 70%).

Read – What is the best way to treat acute arthritis?

  1. Cocaine for Pain Relief

In the 1800s, you could purchase cocaine drops to take the bite out of a toothache or suck on a cocaine throat lozenge if your throat became scratchy from too much singing or teaching (they were advertised for singers, teachers and orators). Due to its pain-relieving properties, cocaine was also used as anesthetic during surgery.

Think the idea of using cocaine for pain relief is crazy? Today more than 40 people die every day from overdoses involving FDA-approved pain relievers like Vicodin, Oxycontin and methadone.

In fact, overdoses involving prescription painkillers that your doctor will readily prescribe now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined!

  1. Spinal Fusion Surgery

This surgery, which eliminates motion between vertebrae in your spine, is recommended using the quite archaic premise that if your painful vertebrae can be stopped from moving, your pain will be relieved.

But as you might suspect, fusing together vertebrae in your spine does not come without consequence, like less flexibility in your spine and foundational changes in the way your spine can move.

Because spinal fusion surgery places additional stress on surrounding vertebrae, it can actually increase spinal degeneration and is associated with increases in disability, painkiller use and an inability to work.

Why More Onions Can Remarkably Improve Your Health?

Why More Onions Can Remarkably Improve Your Health? Do you know that eating onions can remarkably improve your health? Read on to find out more.

…So Nutritious They Will Make You Cry and At The Same Time Can Remarkably Improve Your Health!

A member of the lily family along with leeks, chives, scallions, and garlic, onions are one of the most cultivated and consumed vegetables in the world.

But despite their popularity, many people don’t realize just how nutritious they really are. So first…

A Little History

The hardy onion — a possible staple of the prehistoric diet — is definitely an oldie but goodie, having been cultivated by civilizations for more than 5,000 years.

Ancient Egyptians regarded onions as objects of worship. They symbolized eternity (due to their circle-within-a-circle structure) and buried them with their Pharaohs.

Some historians believe Egypt’s reverence for the onion stemmed more from its medicinal properties. Onions were appreciated for their antiseptic qualities, which were perceived to be magical and very handy in the afterlife.

The medicinal reputation of onions only grew as centuries passed. By the Middle Ages, onions were prescribed to treat a wide range of problems from headaches to hair loss and snakebites, and early American settlers used them to battle cold, coughs and asthma.

Nowadays, science has finally caught up with the onion, and the news is terrific. Nutritionists, food scientists and practitioners of natural medicine have come to appreciate the onion as a nutritional powerhouse and a natural source for all sorts of health-promoting phytochemicals and nutrients.

Quercetin: A Versatile, Natural Weapon Against Disease

One of the key nutritional benefits of onions is the presence of quercetin, a group of plant pigments that give vegetables, fruits and flowers much of their color.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that quercetin does all kinds of good things that can remarkably improve your health. For example, quercetin inhibits the low-density lipoprotein oxidation that contributes to coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis, and protects and helps to regenerate another popular and powerful antioxidant: Vitamin E.

Quercetin can be found naturally in a number of dietary sources, but the amount you absorb from consuming tea or apples, for example, pales in comparison to what you get from onions. (Red and yellow onions are among the best sources of quercetin.)

Finally, the quercetin in onions works as a natural anti-inflammatory to reduce pain and reduce the body’s risks of cancer and heart disease.

So though they may make you cry when you cut into them, do have plenty of onions in your diet because they can remarkably improve your health!

How to Help Your Dog Avoid Pain No Risks

Have you ever wondered if the foods you eat and the supplements you take are good (or toxic) for your dog?

This question came to my mind a few weeks back when a friend’s dog – a black lab named Dax – got really sick, really fast.

I won’t paint the picture for you (it’s not pretty) Dax was going outside every half an hour to do his business. By midnight he began to run out of fluids.

My friend rushed Dax to a 24 hour pet emergency clinic where he was immediately put on an IV (to replace the fluids).

Turns out he had a serious bacterial infection in his gut. Because of this, his immune system rushed almost all of his red blood cells to his stomach to fight it off (which explains the frequent bathroom breaks).

I don’t remember the exact numbers, but Dax’s red blood cell count plummeted to under 10% of normal levels. The vet said Dax wouldn’t have made it through the night if it wasn’t for the IV.

Three days – and $2,000 later – Dax was well enough to go home.

The cause?

Dax probably had a compromised immune system before this, but the vets think onions pushed him over the edge. Yes, onions. While chopping up some up for dinner, my friend dropped half an onion on the ground (which Dax quickly gulped down).

Very ODD Treatment…

Anyways, among a few medications, the doctor prescribed a very odd follow up treatment. Yogurt.

Why yogurt?

During treatment, the veterinarians gave Dax antibiotics to fight the bacterial infection. Along with killing the bad bacteria in his stomach, these antibiotics also wiped out the good bacteria. It’s well known in people that yogurt restores gut health because it is chock full of good bacteria…so why not dogs?

Another natural substance that works wonders in humans and dogs alike is systemic proteolytic enzymes.

They work by breaking down proteins (called fibrin) in the blood that causes inflammation. And since excessive inflammation is linked from everything from chronic pain, to heart disease, and cancer…anything you do to reduce inflammation is a good thing.

You can read more about the healing power of systemic proteolytic enzymes here.

But Do They REALLY Work to Help Your Dog Avoid Pain?

Writing in the July 2012 issue of The Whole Dog Journal, Mary Strauss reports,

“…holistic veterinarians may prescribe systemic enzyme therapy for arthritis and other conditions involving inflammation; injuries; skin and coat problems; cancer; autoimmune disorders; and before and after surgery to reduce swelling, bruising, and pain.”i

And goes on to state dosage recommendations:

“3 tablets once a day for dogs weighing 51-100 pounds, 2 tablets daily for dogs weighing 21 to 50 pounds, and 1 tablet daily for dogs weighing 13 to 20 pounds. Higher doses are recommended for a variety of conditions.”

As you can imagine, running canine clinical trials isn’t high on the list of researchers, but I was able to find one interesting study to support the use of systemic proteolytic enzymes in dogs.

It dates back to 1964. Researchers reporting in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology used proteolytic enzymes in dogs and found they weresafe and efficient…in systemic thrombolytic therapy”.

What is systemic thrombolytic therapy?

It involves breaking up blood clots that impede the flow of blood. This may be why holistic veterinarians prescribe systemic enzyme therapy to dogs for arthritis and other conditions involving inflammation.

Because blocking blood flow (with a blood clot or otherwise) to an injured area can slow down healing. This happens because fresh, nutrient rich blood gets trapped out. And inflammation (and other toxins) get trapped in.

Removing these obstructions restores healthy circulation.

If you suspect your pooch is in pain, Heal-N-Soothe may help your dog avoid pain in a big way…

It contains a unique systemic proteolytic enzyme blend that helps breaking down fibrin in the blood that causes inflammation. Over 50,000 people have turned to Heal-N-Soothe for relief from pain. Your dog will love it too.
