It is also important to remember that more than two tablespoons of an oil substance will create a slick area on the shower floor when the scrubbing is done. This can lead to dangerous slips and serious injuries, so it is imperative that no extra oil is left in the tub.

 

There are many ways to make your own body scrub at home. The most basic way to make your own body scrub is simply to mix a wet ingredient with a dry, exfoliating ingredient. Common wet ingredients that are found around the house are liquid soap, vegetable butter, and various types of oil.

 

Examples of easy to find exfoliating ingredients are sugar, oatmeal, salt, ground coffee, cornmeal, or anything that will provide your own signature body scrub with the right texture to allow it to get to work on removing those dead skin cells.

 

One of my favourite exfoliating agents for making a body scrub at home is the Dead Sea salt. Dead Sea salt has many benefits for the body, including exfoliating, moisturizing, revitalizing and cleansing. Salt gathered from the Dead Sea makes an excellent body scrub because of its high mineral content, which is much higher than normal sea salt.

 

In fact, Dead Sea salt contains magnesium, potassium and calcium, all of which work to repair, heal and hydrate the skin. Using this salt in a body scrub will yield almost miraculous results on sufferers of dry skin, psoriasis, acne, wrinkles and aging skin.

 

When you make your own body scrub, one to two tablespoons each from both the “dry” ingredient and the “wet” ingredient is perfect for creating a single-use portion. And if you’re feeling adventuresome, why not try adding seaweed, herbs, aloe, or even clay to make your own body scrub for a luxurious feel and an exotic twist.

 

When an oil is your “wet” ingredient, it’s always best to be careful not to use too much of it for a variety of reasons. The combination should be 1 tablespoon of oil to 2 tablespoons of the exfoliating ingredient. When you are through applying the body scrub, use a sponge to get rid of all the extra oil and other substances that might have been left behind.

 

To add a pleasing scent when you make your own body scrub, add aromatherapy oils (or essential oils) that are infused with perfume, which is the last stage to making your own body scrub. Add the oil to the dry grainy subsistence you are using, and you’ll not only be exfoliating but relaxing and letting go of your stress at the same time.

 

Just be careful not to add too much of the aromatherapy oil. Dilute this with carrier oil. For example, 5-6 drops of the aromatherapy oil to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil, which can be olive oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil and almond oil.

 

As for essential oil, I will prefer lavender oil because it is very gentle and good for all skin types, including very sensitive skin. It is perfect for mature skin, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It is also effective in soothing itchy skin.

 

For an all-natural scent, don’t be afraid to get creative with your favorite varieties of flowers and herbs. Besides these, you can either use fruits or vegetables. Many fruits can be ground, pulverized and reduced to pulp in an electric blender providing a wide variety of natural cleansing and moisturizing body scrubs.

 

Papaya, pineapple, peach, avocado, apples, strawberries, grapes with seeds, bananas and tomatoes, which are fruits, can be mashed and combined with natural oils including olive, sunflower, nut and soybean oil with or without a scrubbing ingredient to produce soothing, fresh body scrubs. When using fruits, vegetables or dairy products as body scrubs it is best to make them up fresh as these types of ingredients spoil quickly.

 

Among the choices for vegetables use to make your own body scrub, cucumber is the popular choice. Cucumbers have been used for centuries to help reduce swelling and puffiness especially near the eyes and eyelids. Grinding up fresh cucumber and combining them with salt, sugar or cornmeal produces a skin softening body scrub that can be scented if desired.

 

Another alternative is to use cooked carrots. Cooked carrots to be mashed and combined with olive oil and one of the scrubbing (exfoliating) ingredients produces a nourishing scrub that will help repair damaged skin tissues from exposure, rash or illness. Beta-carotene and Vitamin C (which can be found in carrots) are common ingredients used in commercial skincare products but making your own will save you money.

You can apply mint juice on the affected area. After 15-20 minutes, you rinse off with lukewarm water. Another known effective home remedy for acne is the application of coriander juice, or mint and turmeric powder mixture on the face. Make sure that you cleanse your face thoroughly before applying it at night.

 

You crush some garlic cloves and apply on the face 1-2 times a day. This will help you to get rid of blackheads. Acne can also be eliminated by eating three seeds of garlic daily for a month. This purifies the blood in your body and keeping acne away from you.

 

You can also get rid of blackheads by making a paste out of fenugreek. Aside from using its seed to make curry powder, fenugreek, through its leaves, can be a useful treatment for acne. Making a paste out of its leaves, you can produce a facemask that can be applied at night to prevent pimples and blackheads.

 

Grated cucumber is considered as the best toner for the skin. By applying grated cucumber slices on the face, eyes, and neck for 15 to 20 minutes a day for a week or so, you can eliminate persistent blackhead and pimples.

 

You can mix roasted and powdered pomegranate skin with fresh lime juice to form a paste and apply over boils, pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

Fuller’s earth or kaolin powder is a classic ingredient for treating acne affected skin. Here is a great acne treatment for oily skin. Mix one tablespoon of kaolin powder to 3 drops of tea tree oil. Mix well with 2 tablespoon of distilled or filtered water to make a fluid yet balanced paste. Apply it on your face and rinse after 30 minutes with lukewarm water.

One of my favorites is the peach facial, which works very well as a tightening mask. Simply take a ripened peach, and remove the skin and the pit from the center. Place the peach and the whites from a single egg in a blender, and whip until smooth. Pat the mixture onto your face, and allow it to sit there for 30 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

I have found that the apple mask is very good for normal skin. Peel, core, and quarter an apple. Chop the apple in your blender, and add two tablespoons of honey. Blend until smooth. Then remove the mixture from the blender, and refrigerate for approximately 10 minutes. Apply the mixture to your face using a patting motion, and be sure to pat until the honey becomes tacky. Leave it on for about 30 minutes, and rinse with warm water.

 

Mask for acne # 9

 

I have also had great success with a Strawberry mask that my Grandmother told me about. The trick here is to use extremely ripe Strawberries. Add approximately 1 cup of strawberries and a cup of corn starch to the blender and blend until smooth. Apply the mixture on the face, and be careful to avoid the area around your eyes. Leave on for 30 minutes and rinse with cold water.

 

Mask for acne # 10

 

This facial mask is excellent for blemished skin. Chop a ripened tomato into small pieces, and place it in your blender. Add one tablespoon of lemon juice and some instant oatmeal or rolled oats. Mix until it is all combined. Do not mix for too long, as it will not stick to your face. If it gets too thin, simply add more oatmeal. Apply the mixture, and leave it on for 10 minutes. Scrub it off using a warm, wet cloth.

 

The above mask for acne recipes is a natural way to cure this skin problem. You should use face masks at least twice a month for a healthy, glowing skin. Make sure you cleanse or wash your face with an oil-free cleanser before applying any face mask. Those with oily skin should use an oil-free moisturizer.

For generations, Indian medical practitioners have made poultices from Neem leaves to cure skin diseases such as boils, ulcers, eczema, and ring worm. Pastes and extracts from Neem trees have also proven effective in treating various skin fungus conditions, including athlete’s foot and lesions in the mouth and vagina.

 

More serious diseases such as chicken pox and small pox have been treated with Neem tree pastes; and even people suffering from herpes and hepatitis B viruses have obtained relief from Neem tree preparations.

 

Ayurveda and traditional herbal medicine suggest chicken pox patients to sleep on neem leaves to get rid of the problem. The neem gum prepared from bark is typically used as a bulking agent and for the production of medicinal foods for diabetic patients.

 

Horticulture Usages

 

This tree offers a great resource for environment-friendly biopesticides. Limonoids found in the leaves, seeds and bark are used as an effective insect-growth controlling substance. The uniqueness lies with its ability to alter the life-processing behavior of the insect in such a fashion that the insect becomes unable to feed, breed or undergo through metamorphosis process.

 

Treating Acne

 

Neem offers great solution to acne and provides good support for skin elasticity. Its medicinal properties make it one of the effective herbal remedies for acne blemishes. For centuries, crushed neem leaves have been used to treat acne and improve the skin texture.

 

Neem leaves contain quercetin, a compound that aids the body in its response to inflammation which helps sooth painfully irritated blemishes and cool the skin. Acne eruptions that become infected at the surface can itch, and quercetin effectively combats this irritation.

 

To treat acne, you take some dried neem leaves ground them into a fine powder, mix with water and apply it on the skin. Or, you can mix a teaspoon of neem powder with a pinch of turmeric and few drops of neem oil. Apply this paste on the face and then wash.

 

Another way is to boil some neem leaves (about 50 leaves in 2 litres of water) till the water turns green. You throw away the leaves which have by now become soft and discoloured and keep the solution in a bottle.

 

When you bath, you add about 100 ml of this solution to your bath water. This works to rid the skin of infections, acne and whiteheads. You can also dip a cotton ball into this solution and wipe your face with it every night. This will clear acne, scars, pigmentation and blackheads.

 

You can prepare a face mask by mixing betonite clay with a few drops of neem oil. Apply the mixture on your face and wash off after ten minutes.

 

Or, you can just simply dab neem oil (which is extracted from crushed neem seeds) on the affected area a few times daily to cure acne. Neem oil is rich in fatty acids which hydrates and nourishes the skin.

 

Why not try a ready-to-use neem spray that can be simply sprayed on the affected area? After the spray, you may use a neem-based lotion to moisturize your skin and retain its suppleness.

 

Treating other skin conditions

 

Besides acne, the healing properties of neem is also applicable to other skin conditions especially those which don’t respond to typical medical treatment, such as psoriasis, eczema, ringworm and warts. Neem is also beneficial to skin by helping heal minor scrapes and skin abrasions because of its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

 

Hair care

 

The extract of leaves, seeds as well as barks is effective in treating scabies, a transmissible ectoparasite skin infection. Human head lice can be cured with the external application of neem leave juice over the scalp.

A paste made of neem leaves boiled in water and honey, and applied to the hair, leaves it well-conditioned, without frizz and dandruff free.

 

Other Uses

 

Neem oil is 100% natural, biodegradable and is also high in antioxidants. In addition to treating skin diseases, i.e. eczema, psoriasis and various inflammations and fevers, this natural healing agent is also utilized as an insect repellent for humans as well.

 

It has the ability to enhance the immune system. Also its immune polysaccharides property makes it a future cancer cure. Apart from that, it decreases the blood sugar level and reduces the possible usage of insulin to 30%-50%; hence it is effective for diabetic patient.

 

The extracts are found to be beneficial for other diseases as well such as herpes, heart diseases, hepatitis, fungal infection, malaria, psoriasis, and ulcer.

 

WORD OF CAUTION

 

Women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should not use neem products.

 

It’s also best to keep neem applications away from mucous membranes, so you should not treat acne outbreaks close to the nostrils or eyes with a topical neem treatment.

 

Patients with a history of stomach disease or irregularities should not use neem leaf-based supplements.

 

Neem leaf contains active ingredients that may prove to be toxic in patients suffering from diseases of liver and kidney.
