The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, which appeared in the journal JAMA in 2018, proposed one of two ideal programs: either a weekly total of 150 minutes of light to moderate aerobic exercise combined with two strength training sessions, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise combined with two strength training sessions.

 

But till now, there has been little scientific scrutiny of these specific guidelines.

 

This is the gap that the new study intended to fill. And the results were quite surprising.

 

The authors of the new study decided to examine whether adherence to these two exercise schedules was associated with a reduction in death from all causes and death from eight specific causes: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, lower respiratory tract diseases, pneumonia and flu, kidney diseases, and accidents and injuries.

 

They first consulted the National Health Interview Surveys from 1997 to 2014 in which people reported their weekly aerobic and muscle strengthening activities.

 

They then compared this data with information obtained from the National Death Index records that stretched across nine years.

 

Overall, the authors used the information that 479,856 people provided and categorized the results into four groups: insufficient activity, aerobic activity only, muscle strengthening only, and both types of activities according to the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

 

Unsurprisingly, only 16 percent (or 76,384) of the participants met the exercise guidelines, and 59,819 of them died during the study period.

 

Compared to participants who engaged in insufficient exercise, those who did sufficient muscle strengthening activity had an 11 percent lower risk of all-causes death, and those who performed sufficient aerobic activity had reduced their risk of all-causes death by 29 percent.

 

Even better, the risk of all-causes death of those who performed both types of activity according to the guidelines managed to reduce their all-causes death risk by 40 percent.

 

The surprise wasn’t that exercising helps, but rather, it was just how much exercising helps.

Medical scientists have been telling us for ages to avoid meat because it contains saturated fat that supposedly increases our cholesterol levels and, subsequently, the risk of clogged arteries, heart attack, and stroke.

 

A study in the latest edition of the Journal of Nutrition analyzed the effects on cholesterol, blood pressure, and insulin resistance of substituting lean beef for some of the carbohydrates in a healthful American diet.

 

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that American adults obtain no more than 20 percent of their daily energy from protein; for Americans, daily protein sources are most often animal products.

 

According to these guidelines, the bulk of Americans’ energy needs should be satisfied with carbohydrates because animal products, which can be rich in saturated fat, may cause high cholesterol and diabetes.

 

But because lean beef actually contains fairly little saturated fat, a team of researchers decided to establish what would happen if lean beef were added to a relatively healthful American diet in the place of carbohydrates.

 

Their subjects were 7 men and 26 women with an average age of 44.4 years; all were overweight or obese, with an average body mass index of 31.3 kg/m2. The subjects had all been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome or prediabetes, but those with excessively high cholesterol and blood pressure were excluded.

 

They split them into two groups:

 

  1. A group who ate the conventional diet recommended by the USDA (the “USDA-CON group”). They obtained 16–18 percent of their daily energy from protein and 52–58 percent from carbohydrates.

 

  1. A group who replaced some of the carbohydrates of the USDA-recommended diet with 150 grams (5.21 ounces) of lean beef (the “USDA-LB group”).

 

Each group consumed its diet for seven days, after which the subjects were told to resume their normal diets for 14 days. The groups then swapped and ate the other group’s original diet for another seven days.

 

Before and after each seven-day dietary period, the scientists tested the subjects’ cholesterol, triglycerides (blood fats), blood pressure, insulin resistance, and a marker of inflammation called C-reactive protein.

 

The two diets did not differ in any of these heart disease and diabetes risk factors, meaning that the substitution of lean beef for carbohydrates makes no difference when it comes to heart disease and diabetes risk for people who are already overweight/obese and prediabetic.

 

This should be good news for people who love lean meat; this finding basically means that they can eat two servings of it per day. This excludes fat and processed meats like ham, bacon, sausages, and mincemeat.

 

The study lasted over a short period of one week and didn’t reveal anything about the long-term effects of eating lean meat, but the study did show that cutting out carbohydrates did nothing to improve type 2 diabetes and other health factors.

However, the researchers also discovered that any additional increase of vitamin D in blood levels was related to a significantly heightened risk for CRP (a marker of cardiovascular inflammation).

 

Nevertheless, it is important to understand that vitamin D is crucial to our cardiovascular health, and many studies proved that optimum vitamin D levels reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and even reduce mortality.

 

However, there can be too much of a good thing, and vitamin D supplements may pose unnecessary health risks to people.

 

Health care providers should be aware of the potential risks of overloading on vitamin D and recommend the vitamin only when there is an obvious need for it.

 

Remember that the best source of vitamin D is sunshine. A daily walk outside for at least 20 minutes in the morning will ensure that you have the optimal levels of vitamin D in your system.

 

And you can never overdose on vitamin D from sunlight; your body will just stop absorbing it.

 

However, if you are not sure if you lack or have too much of this vitamin, talk to your physician and ask for a blood test to determine your vitamin D levels.

 

The generally accepted recommended blood levels of vitamin D are 50–70 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml).

 

However, if you do need to supplement with vitamin D, at least make sure that you are using vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and NOT Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Studies researching the connection between meat consumption and cardiovascular health have been quite contradictory, which has baffled researchers.

 

But a new study from the Journal of Hypertension may finally explain this.

 

Yes, meat can cause stroke and heart attack. But what you do after eating meat may completely reverse the damage.

 

You see, one of the reasons why human beings have a limited lifespan and why elderly people have greater levels of cardiovascular disease is because our blood vessels naturally age along with the rest of our bodies.

 

This means that the tissue that constitutes our blood vessels becomes damaged and compromises our bodies’ ability to circulate blood.

 

Researchers have been trying for some time to figure out what foods accelerate this natural aging so that they can recommend against eating them.

 

The easiest way to do this is to examine the substances that seem to increase naturally in our bodies as we age and to test their effects on blood vessel tissue.

 

Researchers can then work out whether these substances are related to any of the foods we eat.

 

This is exactly what the authors of the new study did. They noticed that previous studies had found that people with high levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (or TMAO) in their blood were twice as likely as those with low levels were to suffer heart attacks, experience strokes, or die prematurely.

 

They related this finding to age by measuring the TMAO levels in 101 older and 22 young adults, finding that TMAO levels increased as people aged and that blood vessel functioning became significantly worse over time, with far greater blood vessel tissue damage.

 

They confirmed these results in a study on mice. When they fed TMAO to young mice, their blood vessels looked like those of mice more than twice their age.

 

In just a few months of adding TMAO to their diets, they aged the blood vessels of 12-month-old mice to resemble those seen in 27-month-old mice. In human years, that is a blood vessel increase from 35 to 79 years old.

 

So, what is TMAO?

 

TMAO is a substance produced by your liver from trimethylamine, and trimethylamine is a substance that is produced as a by-product when your gut bacteria process the amino acids L-carnitine and choline, the proteins found in abundance especially in animal products like meat, eggs, and cream.

 

In other words, the more animal products you eat, the higher the levels of TMAO are in your blood, and the more blood vessel damage you suffer.

 

But this finding may not be as straightforward as it seems.

 

When the scientists fed old mice a substance called dimethyl butanol, which occurs in olive and grapeseed oils, red wine, and balsamic vinegar, they managed to reverse much of the blood vessel damage.

 

This probably shows why red meat is unhealthful for many people but barely affects those who, for example, eat the Mediterranean diet, with its central ingredient of olive oil.

 

Therefore, so long as you eat a relatively healthful diet and pile on the olive oil and other foods high in dimethyl butanol, a reasonable amount of animal protein may not do much damage to your heart.

Eliminate All Plaque Buildup in Your Arteries – Why HDL Cholesterol Is Sometimes Good…But Sometimes Not

 

HDL (good cholesterol) has long been viewed as an important lifesaver because it removes LDL (bad cholesterol) from the bloodstream.

 

But some new studies have indicated that HDL does nothing to prevent stroke and heart attack.

 

Scientists from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center set out to investigate this dilemma.

 

And in a new study, published in the journal Circulation, they reveal that one letter makes all the difference.

 

The scientists tested two different measures of HDL cholesterol.

 

They obtained the data they analyzed from four large studies: the Dallas Heart Study, the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, and the Prevention of REnal and Vascular ENdstage Disease Intervention Trial.

 

Altogether, they used the data of 15,784 subjects who they tracked between 8 and 12 years to determine the subjects’ health outcomes.

 

The two different ways of testing HDL cholesterol yielded different results.

 

The most common way to test HDL is to measure the amount of HDL in our blood. This measurement is called HDL-C.

 

Another test is called HDL-P. This counts the number of HDL particles that circulate through our blood.

 

Because each particle contains different amounts of HDL cholesterol, these tests often result in different HDL concentrations.

 

For example, if you have twice as many HDL particles as I have, but each of my HDL particles contains twice as much HDL cholesterol as yours do, your HDL-P is higher, but our HDL-C scores are the same.

 

This study showed that HDL-P scores were more important for heart health than the commonly used HDL-C scores were.

 

Compared with the people with the lowest HDL-P scores, those with the highest scores were 37 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack and 34 percent less likely to suffer a stroke.

To date, research into omega-3 fatty acids and heart disease has been a bit confusing. In general, studies seem to show that these fats can reduce our risk of heart disease, but they simultaneously appear to show that omega-3 fats raise LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, usually called bad cholesterol.

 

LDL cholesterol is called bad cholesterol because it is the type that clogs our arteries and causes atherosclerosis.

 

So how can more LDL be good?

 

The answer lies in a new study published in the latest Journal of the American Heart Association.

 

In response to this paradox, researchers from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and Harvard Medical School hypothesized that the answer lies in the type of LDL cholesterol that is increased by omega-3 fats.

 

They collected the data of 26,034 people from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Women’s Health Study. This included their eating habits, their consumption of fish and other sources of omega-3, their medication use, their physical activity levels, their smoking status, and a whole range of other information.

 

Most importantly, it included the results of nuclear magnetic resonance scans on the participant’s blood that could characterize the components of their blood in detail.

They divided omega-3 intake into total omega-3, fish, and the omega-3 subtypes called eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic, and alpha-linolenic acids.

 

Alpha-linolenic acids appear in plants like flaxseed, walnuts, and chia. The other two are obtained from fish and, if you are vegetarian, from edible algae.

 

Those who consumed the most fish and total omega-3 had significantly lower triglycerides (fats in the blood) and higher large VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) particles.

 

Those who consumed the most eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in the form of fish had the highest total and LDL cholesterol, but their cholesterol particles were larger than those who consumed the least of these fatty acids.

 

Total omega-3 intake as well as docosahexaenoic acid and alpha-linolenic acid also increased the participant’s HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein; so-called “good cholesterol”) and the size of their HDL particles.

 

These are important findings since they again confirm that it is not our cholesterol levels, but rather the exact character of our cholesterol particles, that matter when it comes to the origins of heart disease.

 

To be more precise, it is small cholesterol particles that cause atherosclerosis, not large ones, and since omega-3 fats promote large particles at the expense of small ones, it is a good prevention tool against atherosclerosis.

They also found behavioral traits like impatience, extreme ambition, judgmentalness, and aggression doubled it.

 

Similarly, a large literature review from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed the chronic stress at work and marital unhappiness, along with the burdens of caregiving, contributes to myocardial infarction, myocardial ischemia, altered cardiac regulation, and sudden death.

 

But while scientists understand that stress poses a risk to heart health, they’re yet to discover the mechanism by which stress has these destructive effects.

 

The Lancet has just published a study by a large group of scientists that identifies such a mechanism based on brain scans.

 

They gave 293 people a combined PET/CT scan to record the activities in their brains, bone marrow and spleens, and the inflammation in their arteries.

 

They were then observed for 3.7 years on average to check for whether they had developed cardiovascular disease or suffered a heart attack or stroke.

 

During this period, 22 of these people suffered a stroke or heart attack or other forms of cardiovascular disease like angina, heart failure, or peripheral arterial disease.

 

It turned out that those with the highest activity of the amygdala, the part of the brain processing stimuli and emotional responses, were the most likely to suffer from these cardiovascular events.

 

The amygdala forms and stores associations and memories related to emotional events.

In 2009, for example, researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles analyzed the medical statistics of 136,905 heart attack patients from 541 hospitals across the U.S.

 

LDL scores of 50% of these patients were low–normal, and those of a further 25% were acceptable. Only 25% had a high cholesterol level.

 

This seems to suggest that something other than LDL is involved in serious heart disease.

And again, drinking margaritas or sipping beers HASN’T been shown to have the same health benefits as wine (we get this question a lot).

Improve Cholesterol and Heart Health – One Coffee Type Prevents Heart Attack—Another Causes It

 

Studies on coffee consumption and cardiovascular health are very contradictory.

Some studies show extreme benefits of coffee while others show extreme dangers of heart attack and stroke.

 

So, a team of Norwegian researchers decided to research whether the way we brew our coffee might be what makes a difference.

 

Indeed, one type of coffee brewing was found to significantly decrease risk of heart attack while another type increased the risk.

 

From 1985 onwards, the research team recruited a large sample of 508,747 healthy Norwegian adults that was roughly representative of the population regarding age, race, gender, and so on.

 

They observed these participants for an average of 20 years and were interested to see who would die of cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart attacks.

 

During this period, the team also asked the subjects about their coffee drinking habits and brewing methods and recorded changes, if any.

 

During the 20 years of follow-up, 46,341 participants died, including 12,621 from cardiovascular disease.

 

Of these cardiovascular disease deaths, 6,202 were caused by heart attacks, and 2,894 were caused by strokes.

 

Compared with those who drank no coffee at all, those who drank filtered coffee were 15 percent less likely to die prematurely of any cause. Men were 12 percent and women were 20 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

 

Unfiltered coffee was a different matter, though, and no healthier than abstaining from coffee altogether for younger adults and causing deaths of any cause, deaths of cardiovascular disease, and deaths of heart attacks for those over the age of 60.

 

So why is filtered coffee healthier for our hearts than unfiltered coffee?

 

From the available literature, the researchers concluded that the culprits were the chemical substances in the coffee grounds and oils that remained in the coffee if it was unfiltered. These chemicals cause high cholesterol and, thus, cardiovascular disease and early death.

 

Using the study as a guide for coffee brewing, it means that you should stay away from Turkish coffee, which is yummy but unfiltered. Any other finely ground coffees in which the grains remain unfiltered at the bottom of your cup while you drink the liquid from the top are equally unhealthy.

 

A French press or any other plunger device that uses a meshed metal screen at the bottom of the plunger is not good enough to qualify as a filtering device either, as it can’t thoroughly filter out the oils from the coffee beans.

 

The best filters were found to be percolators with paper or fabric filters.

Improve Cholesterol and Heart Health – This Cholesterol Combats Alzheimer’s

 

An excess of cholesterol wreaks havoc in our blood vessels, and researchers have now discovered it causes Alzheimer’s disease as well.

 

Canadian researchers examined the brains of patients who had died of Alzheimer’s disease, finding that Alzheimer’s brains contained significantly more cholesterol than non-Alzheimer’s brains.

 

But that’s only half the story… They also discovered that Alzheimer’s brains and healthy brains do very different things with cholesterol.

The Canadian team found that Alzheimer’s brains retained cholesterol while healthy brains metabolized it. This study appeared in the journal Neurobiology of Disease.

 

A few years later, a different team published a study in Molecular Neurodegeneration in which they actually demonstrated what happened to neurons when they loaded cholesterol into their membranes.

 

These neurons immediately started resembling and behaving like neurons in Alzheimer’s brains.

 

Compared to non-Alzheimer’s neurons, Different genes were turned on and off, the transport of proteins in those neurons were blocked, and they secreted a lot more amyloid-beta42, a protein that appears in large amounts in Alzheimer’s brains.

 

But at present researchers still don’t understand the exact role that cholesterol plays in the development of the disease.

 

Until exact cause and effect relationships can be proven, it’s best to drop cholesterol to healthy levels.

Improve Cholesterol and Heart Health – The Best Diet to Lower Bad Cholesterol

 

Hundreds of diets all claim to be the best at weight loss, cardiovascular health, and other health benefits.

 

But which diet works the best?

 

A study just published in the journal BMJ has answered this question.

 

There were many candidates for this short-term gain, but only ONE winner for long-term weight loss and cardiovascular health benefit.

 

A large multinational team of researchers reviewed 121 studies with about 22,000 participants.

 

In these studies, the subjects were divided into a group that followed a diet and a group that continued to eat normally. They all compared these groups based on weight and cardiovascular health factors.

 

In general, the diets were divided into low-fat, low-carbohydrate, and moderate macronutrient diets.

 

The macronutrient diet contained more vegetables, fruits, and legumes than our current diet as well as less fat and carbohydrates.

 

The team also looked at various popular diets, like Atkins (keto type), Mediterranean, DASH, and Zone.

 

Within six months of commencing the diets, all participants showed slight weight reduction and improvement in cardiovascular health.

 

Regarding weight loss, low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets led to a loss of between four and five kilograms (or 8.8 and 11 pounds) over the six-month period.

 

Moderate macronutrient diets were less effective.

 

Low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets were also approximately equally effective at reducing both systolic (5 mmHg) and diastolic (3 mmHg) blood pressure by six months.

 

Moderate macronutrient diets were less effective here too.

 

Low-fat and moderate macronutrient diets were the best at reducing bad LDL cholesterol, and low-carbohydrate diets were the best at increasing good HDL cholesterol —but again, only at six months.

 

Atkins, DASH, and Zone were approximately equally effective at reducing weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol by six months.

 

By 12 months, however, the picture looked quite different. By then, the cardiovascular effects and weight loss benefits of all these diets but one had disappeared.

 

Only the Mediterranean diet maintained its positive effects on cardiovascular health by 12 months. The largest of these effects was on cholesterol reduction.

 

There are three things to learn from this study.

 

First, our normal diet is so unhealthy that any other diet can have positive effects—in the short term, at least.

 

Second, if weight loss is your priority, then Atkins, DASH, and Zone are your best bets in the short term. However, if heart health is more important—which it should be—then the Mediterranean diet is the only one that maintains its positive health effects in the long term.

 

Third, dieting alone is not a terribly effective weight loss tool, which is why it is better to combine it with other positive lifestyle changes, like regular exercise, stress reduction, and adequate sleep.

There’s an unprecedented amount of people taking statins and following dietary advice from the American Heart Association to cure their high cholesterol problems.

But, if they’re following such expert medical advice, why are high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease cases skyrocketing around the world?

A research group from Dublin put a revolutionary theory to a test in a study published in the journal Nutrition & Diabetes – if something isn’t working, do the exact opposite!

It was related to eating more of something that we’ve always been told was bad for us.

And, this so-called “bad” food does wonders for our cholesterol levels.

Most of us grew up with the advice that dairy is unhealthy and we should restrict our intake of milk, butter, cheese, cheese, and cream.

Previously, we were told dairy products contain saturated fat, and saturated fat increases our levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

However, a recent study proved otherwise.

Researchers asked 1500 adults to keep food diaries for four days. They also collected their subject’s fasting blood samples and conducted various other tests.

Those who ate more dairy products had the lowest body mass indices, the lowest percentage of body fat, the smallest waist circumference, the smallest waist-to-hip ratio, and the lowest systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which are all signs of good health.

The subjects were split into three groups. They consumed:

  1. Butter and cream;
  2. Whole milk;
  3. Reduced fat milks and yogurt.

If the traditional advice is correct, you would expect the last group to have yielded the healthiest results – however, they had higher total cholesterol and triglyceride (blood fat) levels than the other groups.

Those who drank the most milk, whole or low-fat, had lower circulating levels of some inflammatory markers than their peers, and also had higher insulin sensitivity.
